The only thing that I know about this soundtrack is that the Birdwatchers
sing a song in it called "Can I do it?" Another singer, Steve Alaimo,
stars in it. From what I hear, Jack Chick was a member of this group, gave
up Rock and Roll and formed Chick Publications, a born-again publishing
house. I remember taking umbrage at poor racial humor in one of those
comics of his.

Boy oh boy, I've been waiting for a good oportunity to throw this URL out to the world. If you haven't seen it, prepare yourselves well

     http://www.disinfo.com/prop/brainw/prop_brainw_jackchick.html

It explains all of Jack Chick's recurring themes such as Catholic bashing, Haw Haw Haw, and a link to the official Jack Chick web page, guaranteed to send you screaming into Hell with laughter.

Jack Chick was in the Birdwatchers??????? Time to go back and listen to those 45's again. What did he do?

"Anyway That You Want Me," if you listen closely, features the exact same
three chords that "Wild Thing" uses! It sounds more like "Wild Thing" in
non-Troggs versions of it (check out Sandy Posey or The American Breed).

I didn't see the original post that this response was to, but Chip Taylor
was not a rock guy, if someone was wondering. His solo albums are more C/W.

Why do they have to remix it? Grrrr.
They released a live album in Hooland when they were still around; that's
probably the source of the live material. I've been looking for it forever.
They released two 45s, one in the different versions (different b-sides).

Hey, any Bompers in the Bellingham area? Former Beau Brummel Sal Valentino is
playing at the Lummi Casino on April 25th and 26th. Three shows each night,
9:30, 10:45 and 11:30. He's going to be doing a lot of Beau Brummels classics.
Bellingham (Washington) is about 90 miles from me, but I might try to make this
one.

The Kaisers' drummer is a regular at the Wild Boston Room and was in
attendance last Thursday - looking decidedly un-Hamburg 1962 . Hey some of
us expect a Kaiser to wear cuban heel boots and a tab collar shirt all the
time! Anyway send me a message with your details and I will see if he turns
up tomorrow night (Thursday). Failing that I can have a word with Barney
(the guy behind lots of 50s comps such as the 'Black Rock'n'Roll' series)
'cause I know he's a big mate of the band. He may be able to come up with
an address/fax number for you.

The Armitage Shanks 'Shirts Off' ep features Billy singing on two songs, the
eponymous track plus 'Kray Twins' (originally by Billy's first band the Pop
Rivets). The first written by Childish/Huggins (AKA Dick Scum) and the
second by Childish/Brand. The Shanks also cover 'Everyday' on the flip of
'Support Slot' (the latter an awesome song about the trendies who turn up to
see thee Headcoats at the St Johns Tavern/Wild Boston Room and dig the
Shanks "cause Billy quite likes them so they must be alright"). There are
probably a few more Childish songs that the Shanks have covered, I suggest
it may save you time if you speak with Patrick Davies, the man behind the
Billy Childish Homepage. You'll find him at :

This would be where last week's Love/Loved Ones thread comes in. Most likely, John Kent of the Loved Ones will be behind the trap. I think you cats in that area better clear off your calendars now.

The remixes are for two reasons. One, the original 45 masters could not
be located--they had been left at a pressing plant which is long gone,
apparently, and couldn't be traced. The original multitracks still were
in Donnie's garage, though, and he supervised the remix. Also, the
Holland lp (which was studio material, actually, I am told) had a really
lousy mix--it was done in a hurry at the time. The new mixes were much
more carefully done. In the case of the band's signature tune "Aliens In
Our Midst" (did they know Bo and Peep, I wonder?), the 45 mix used some
sort of oscillation effect through the mixing board which was not on the
multitrack itself. This song will be mastered from a mint, early pressing
of the 45. Rest assured that this package is being put together with
loving care.

The live material has never been released, it is from cassette recordings
made by the band, and though relatively lo-fi is supposed to be well worth
hearing.

Stay tuned... I will post more about this as soon as I know it.

Frank

Subject: Re: Kenne Highland's birthday Spectacular

Well, since DKuguel asked and we just got back..you did say DETAILS...
Because Wille Alexander had to cancel out, Fin de Siecle had an extra
long set--Fin de Siecle is Aram Heller's band, Aram being known in the
garage world for his label, Stanton Park records. Kenne guested on
their version of Reincarnation...great guitar work by Aram,, and the
drummer also played sax and bagpipes, quite a treat...
The Varmints up next--ex members of the Real Kids& Classic
Ruins--classic Boston punk.
Kenne Highland Clan did songs from their new tape, which they
shamelessly hawked through the night! Keilbasa was a highlight as
usual, wth pieces of real kielbasa being tossed into the audience. The
Goody Goody Gumdrops, actually part of the Clan but listed as a separate
entity in a shamelsss attrempt to double their performance time, did
their 70's bubblegum favorites, and more songs from the new tape...And
yes, the infamous Captain PJ stood in front of the stage the whole time,
screaming insanely and calling attention to himself as much as possible.
He was rewarded with a dedication of "Not Mental Enough..."
The Pretty Flowers were the token noise/experimental band, with echos of
PIL and the Velvet Underground. Lots of feedback.
The Throbbing Lobsters (Doom Buggies in disguise) did hits from the Mass
Ave edition of the Rhino DYI series, the highlight being their version
of La Peste's Better Off Dead....
Devotions--Real Kid John Felice's current band, one of the best around,
did mostly their newer stuff but covered Rave on, dedicated to Willie
Alexander's girlfriend and some french guy named Yves that she had
brought down to the show...cousin of another french guy, gerard, which
we'd met with Willie once...It is my experience that there are numerous
French people who know more about Boston rock than most Bostonians, no
idea how or why.....
X Ray Tango-Ken Kaiser,(formerly of the Beachmasters, and who used to
play wit kenne in the Afrika Korps,)represented Boston surf music...
Silver Star, a bunch of kids too young to remember the seventies
faithfully replicating T Rex and the Sweet, with silver glitter makeup
and 70's glam clothes, had everyone on their feet with "Lttle Willy"...
The Vic Morrows were straight ahead rock, one drunk guy ran around
telling people they were gonna be big! Aftwer he hqad jumped on stage
and sang along with one of their songs...
And...Jeff Connely was in rare form indeed, citing on stage that Kenne
Highland is "the man who gives himself tribute 365 days a year" and
asking for more Cape Codders.Amazing covers of old DMZ sngs with a band
of Highland, Mike Quirk, Alex of the Doom Buggies, and Bruce of the
Devotions--a band that had NEVER rehearsed!!!!! And yes, copyright
infringment or not, they did call themselves (for the night,) the
Monomen....Jeff changed most of the lyrics to Raw Power into comments
about infamous local Keith Bowneice....later in the evening Connelly
told the band to bring the music "down to Bowneice level..."
Apparently Mr. Bowneice annoys Mr. Connelly at his record store job....
Hey, it's wordy and probably ungrammatical...had a great time, really,
but now I need sleep. If anyone is REALLY interested, email me privately
because I'll probably put some of the 150 photos I took on the Highland
Clan website, and 'll give you more info....
