I am a long-ago transplant from the DC area, and reading Robbie White's
mention of Johnny Bombay and The Reactions really brought me back. I'm
wondering if anyone in the DC area has ever spotted the old Switchblade 45
"She Makes Me Rock Too much." I've been trying to locate that for years now.
 Is it pretty much unattainable?

Subject: Guitar Wolf vs. Los Straitjackets?

Okay, here's my dilemma. Guitar Wolf, playing Columbus, OH, Saturday night.
Up the street, Los Straitjackets, same night. Cover to see GW, 3 bucks
tops, to see LS, 5-7 bucks.

What is the better deal? Obviously the Guitar Wolf show would be cheaper,
but are Los Straitjackets worth a couple extra bucks over Guitar Wolf.
Anyone with recommendations may e-mail me before tomorrow...

Without getting into the debate about how good/sucky Guitar Wolf is (see
Banana-Truffle!) I'd rather see Los Straightjackets. Another possibilty is if
LS is playing two sets, as they often do, you might be able to do both.

Unless this happened twice, it's probably a case of a story taking
on bigger proportions in the retelling. Guitar Wolf did do an in-store
appearance at the tiny Adult Crash record shop on Avenue A in winter of
'95/'96. Seiji and Billy were drunk as skunks due to Steve Baise recklessly
plying them with booze. It was an amazing performance nonetheless.
Even though he was having trouble staying vertical, Seiji managed
to climb onto the front counter and play a solo with his head bent slightly
forward. Because of his dark shades (and being blind drunk), he was unable
to see the ceiling fan blades spinning literally an inch from his
unprotected head. He also wouldn't acknowledge the crowd's pleas for him to
come down, until he lifted his guitar up in true rockstar fashion and the
fan rotors kerranged into the guitar neck.
Seiji eventually jumped down, and finished the set (after
staggering into Toru's drums a couple of times). By this time, of course,
no one could tell where too-hammered-to-play ended and out-of-tune began.
But throughout it all, Guitar Wolf displayed the ruthless bravado, as well
as an unshakable confidence in their own coolness, that has made them
legends.
After the show, Seiji retreated to the tiny bathroom in back of the
store, where he was found moaning in embarrassment, his head in his hands.
"So shameful... So shameful..." It took many assurances to convince Seiji
that he hadn't disgraced his fans with his drunken antics.
I don't remember seeing Matador brass there - it was only about 20
people. In any case, it was the most fun I ever had at a Guitar Wolf show.
And that's a lot.

Subject: Another Great Japanese Band

The best gig so far this year...

Picking up lasts week thread about the current crop of
Japanese garage bands, here is another one to add to the
list. At present THE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT
(Tokyo) are in London recording at Toe Rag Studios.
They made an impromptu appearance at the Wild
Boston Room last night and tore the place apart. They
have a similar dress sense to the Flamin' Groovies on
'Shake Some Action' (black suits and pastel coloured
shirts) and an abrasive Punk-R'n'B sound not a million
miles from early Dr Feelgood. The extremely thin and
gaunt lead player even plays a Telecaster and
occasionally shreds off those classic Mick Green/Wilko
Johnson riffs. Their set was a thirty minute barrage of
high energy noise without a pause. From the opening
blast of 'Peter Gunn' the meagre audience (only twenty
paying customers!) knew they were in for something
very special and by the close of the set everyone was on
their feet. If this band visit your town then do yourself a
favour and check them out, but be careful 'cause
watching them is akin to standing in a room with a
hurricane raging. They play two further gigs in London
next Tuesday and Saturday before returning east. I
*shall* attempt to stand near the front.

By the way who are these guys? Hitomi have you heard
of them?

(Took some pictures of the show and will collect the
film from the developers tomorrow. If anyone is
interested I could post a couple on the WWW.)

I've got a great LP of Billy Childish covers that'll knock yer socks
off. Good luck finding it, though! It's called THAT'S MIGHTY CHILDISH
and it's on Vendetta Records (a division of Vinyl Vaults), 22 Byrd
Close, Waterlooville, Hampshire, England P07 5UX. It features such
great bands as The Trashwomen, Green Hornets, Thee Cybermen, Gorgons,
Statics, Inhalants, Armitage Shanks, Jack O' Fire, Spider Babies, and
others. HIGHLY recommended!

LOST AND FOUND: Pirate Radio's Last Emperor

By Rex Weiner

NAME: Michael Pasternak, also known as Emperor Rosko
DESCRIPTION: DJ on 1960s pirate station Radio Caroline.
LAST SEEN: Reclaiming the airwaves in Calabasas.

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - In the U.K. of 1965, hip entrepreneurs got around
BBC restrictions mandated by Harold Wilson's Labour government by beaming
rock 'n' roll music to the mainland from floating transmitters outside
territorial waters.

Great Britain's rock-famished listeners tuned in to Radio Caroline, where
Emperor Rosko was the "highly rated, often imitated, but rarely
duplicated mayor of mayhem."

"We liberated England," says the former "toe-tapping, hand-clapping,
lean, mean record machine" now living a quieter existence Stateside at
his ranch in Calabasas, a semi-rural area north of Los Angeles. There,
Emperor Rosko is known by his given name, Michael Pasternak.

Pasternak-Rosko spun the sounds of Motown and Stax, the Moody Blues, the
Kinks, Stones and Beatles from a 200-foot rust-bucket freighter anchored
four hours offshore. Beginning at Radio Caroline and going on to Radio
One, Emperor Rosko was the toast of Swinging London, a frequenter of the
Ad Lib Club, a buddy of Mick Jagger and other rock royalty.

Most who only knew the voice believed the jive-talking DJ ("I'm rough,
tough and hard to bluff") was black. In fact, the young white man behind
the voice of pirate radio was a product of Hollywood. He was the
rebellious son of producer Joe Pasternak, the man who made Destry Rides
Again with Marlene Dietrich and Spinout with Elvis Presley.

"I didn't like the movie business," Pasternak says now, "maybe because I
grew up with it."

Ironically, after a lifetime spent avoiding the movie biz, Pasternak is
developing a film project about his life and the pirate radio scene of
the 1960s with producer Beverly Camhe (Junior).

Today, the Beverly Hills industry kid who grew up with Cyd Charisse,
Elvis and Mario Lanza lounging by the backyard pool has his own recording
studio, where he puts together 40 weekly hours of radio shows for 15
radio stations in the U.K. and others in Europe. He also runs
his own party DJ business, and has been known to spin discs for wingdings
from Abu Dhabi to Van Nuys.

But he acknowledges things are tame now compared to when he used to bob
about on the high seas beneath a 50,000-watt transmitter for two weeks at
a stretch and buzz around London on his Norton 750 during shore leave
with a "bird" hanging on.

Pasternak was notorious for throwing records he didn't like out the
portholes, even when they were on the label of the record company that
owned the boat. He was fired repeatedly for hijinx such as sabotaging a
Christian evangelist, who'd bought time on the station, by mixing in the
sounds of lovemaking with the religious chorales. Payola was the norm.

("I never played a record I wouldn't have already played," he shrugs.)

And even with lookouts stationed on the ship, the crew was forever
dodging raids by British mobsters looking to muscle in on the outlaw
enterprise.

Those days will be revisited when Pasternak is the guest of honor at a

Radio Caroline reunion in Belfast this summer, playing original Emperor
Rosko tapes at a stadium appearance broadcast live over Northern
Ireland's Citybeat station. He'll be spinning music that was once on the
cutting edge but is now considered Classic Rock. But that's fine with
Pasternak.

"The Stones are still god as far as I'm concerned."

This may get to ya too late, but what the hell... I think Los
Straitjackets are incredibly OVER-rated. And yes, I've seen them live.
Nice schtick with the Mexican wrestling masks, but the music, IMHO, was
sub-par. Go with Guitar Wolf, after all, they're from JAPAN. Los
Straitjackets seem to be touring around a lot lately and you'll probably
have another chance to catch 'em soon enough.
