Ok, I'm a dork. You already mentioned the Vendetta comp. Oops. Ok,
well how 'bout The Bent Scepters excellent version of You'll Be Sorry
Now on their Blind Date with Destiny CD on Prescription Records?
Another one that comes to mind is the Hi-Fives doing Out of Control on
their Welcome To My Mind LP/CD (Lookout #113).

Well, to answer the question that I'm sure is at everyone's fingertips:
Which band did I go see? _Neither of them_! I ended up going to Columbus
alright...but with my ex-girlfriend/friend, so she could see the guy she's
really in love with.

The ironic part is, the biggest reason I was going to one or the other show
was to possibly meet women...

Ah well, I'll make it one of these days...

Hmmm... I'm very skeptical about this one. Seems to me to be a
desperate attempt by a major label to try to make some more moolah off
of an old classic by re-releasing it. Does it sound anything like the
production on any of Iggy's newer stuff? I never had a problem with the
way Raw Power sounded. In fact, I LIKE the way it sounds, and never
once thought it sounded "muddy." Even the name Raw Power to me means
just that... RAW POWER! NOT studio-manipulated remixed and squeaky
clean power! So if it IS "a totally new record" then I probably won't
like it. Just like the rest of Iggy Pop's new records.

Remember the MC5? Same thing happened with them on their Back in the
USA LP, but the reverse is happening with it thanks to the folks at
Bomp/Alive (Total Energy) for re-issuing the old pre-production
rehearsal tapes that show the band in their true RAW form ("muddy" to
you A&R types).

Hi Max

Like just about everyone else, I'd love a copy of the remaster. I had a
fanzine in the 70's that featured Iggy and I still write for Black to
Comm and would love to do a review. You can check out my fanzines at the

Yeah, Peoria's just too far to go for a weeknight show. If it was on a
weekend it'd be a different story. Let me know of any shows that may
happen down in Springfield... that's not so bad. Maybe I can get you
guys a show down here in St. Louis sometime soon. The Hentchmen called
me and are looking for a gig for May 18th, so if that works out I may be
getting in touch with ya!

Hey folks, this is Ken and Scott of The Hate Bombs bringing you the
following tidbit:

Start working on that 7-10 split, kids! It's three days of bowling, booze
and garage madness in MOTOWN! The whole thing is going down at the Magic
Stick Theater, home of Houdini's last show and an honest-ta-gawd bowling
alley (look for band vs. band battle to the death bowl-off). Something
like this could only be called:

The Motor City GUTTERFEST

When:

May 1-3, 1997

And fine entertainment by:

Thurs: May 1
****
The In-Sect (Ohio)
The Volcanos (Mich)
Quadrajets (Alabama)
Man or Monoman? (Jeff C. backed by the Hentchmen!)
? and the Mysterians (Original lineup...Yeah, really!)

Friday: May 2
****
The Hentchmen (Mich)
Fortune and Maltese (Mich)
Mt. McKinnleys (Penn)
Rocket 455 (Mich)
Fleshtones (NYC)

Sat: May 3
****
The Hate Bombs (FL)
The Cowslingers (Ohio)
Bantam Rooster (Mich)
Thee Phantom Five (Tenn)
The Lunkheads (UK)
'Bald Guys (Boston, MA)

Place:
The Magic Stick Theater
4120 Woodward Av
Detroit, MI 48224

Cost:
$25 for all three days
$10/single day
call for info on this stuff...

For info call:
Magic Stick Theater (313) 833-9700 or
Willie (the guy organizing this thang): (313) 885-1587

AND...although this isn't connected with Gutterfest the timing is pretty
darn nice...Thee Headcoats and the Makers will be playing in Detroit on
May 4, the Sunday following Gutterfest! OOF! Good enough reason to go, I
think.

One more note here: We Hate Bombs are looking for some additional dates to
fill out the following week (May 5-9) in the great Mid-West. If you have
any leads or can help please E-Mail Ken at Speedo@magicnet.net or Scott at
Backbone@magicnet.net...thanks!

That's even more pathetic. Maybe you should have asked us at which show you
would have had a better chance of scoring with the women. Personally, when I go
to a show, I like to _hear_ the band, first and foremost- maybe I'm crazy. I
don't mean to sound like an asshole, but this just reinforces this theory I have
about shows: I think maybe a third of the people at any show are there to look
cool, hang out, drink, schmooze, get laid, etc.; another third are there to act
like fuckin' idiots- the "moshers" for instance- these people, generally, aren't
even listening or watching the band because they're too caught up in their
hyperactive freakout. What these people really need is some ritalin; finally,
the other third come to actually hear/see the bands. My point here is this- Why
did you even ask in the first place?
For what it's worth, Guitar Wolf is playing in Normal, IL Tuesday, April 8 at
the Gallery. Opening will be Teenage Timebomb, Nashville Pussy, and the
Pleasure Fuckers- $6/8PM/18 & over.
David, you oughtta consider heading west for this one- there's some really good
looking girls in Normal.

Can anyone here give me any info about the Fun Things? The Vikings, Devil
Dogs, and Teengenerate all covered songs by them, but I've never heard
anything about them. I think they're from Australia (I seem to remember
reading that somewhere)... Does anyone know who they are and where I can
get ahold of their recordings?

For the record: I think Raw Power sounds like shit. All you can really
hear is the vocals and the lead guitar. Everything else is buried. Muddy
is fine, but not being able to hear the rhythm guitars and bass on an
album called RAW POWER is a fucking crime. I don't give a fuck about
pristine sound quality, but compare RAW POWER with the first Stooges
record and tell me which is the superior sound quality. Or better yet,
compare it to the rough mixes Bomp released. Now THOSE recordings are
MUDDY but they still manage to destroy the official cuts...

Sorry to just jump in like this... My name's Matt (if for some reason my
real name doesn't show up on top) and I just subscribed to this list...
If there are any rules as to what should or should not be done on this
thing, someone please let me know...

believe me, sony ain't looking to make this years bottom line
by the billing generated from re-releasing 'raw power' !

they have more than enough acts to potentially sell to the
masses. and in fact, i think (as many here would probably
agree if they heard the rec. & saw the booklet) they should
be commended for investing their energies in this legendary
album. they easily could of taken out a few extra ads in spin
for the latest pearl jam instead.

as to the sonic relative sonic merits, i cannot allow myself the
time to debate you, kopper.

i will just paraphrase iggy himself from the interview in the
liner notes that the original release would not have sounded
like it did but for lack of time & money. this new mix in his
mind IS ...'Raw Power".

On the Murder Punk vol. 2 compilation CD of Australian punk(78-80) there
is a complete Fun Things 7" including the songs that both the Devil Dogs
and Teengenerate covered(probably Vikings too, but I don't know which
song they covered). I'm not sure on the rarity of their records, but I'd
suggest picking up the Murder Punk CDs, 2 volumes of them, they are
really excellent if you like early punk rock along the lines of Back To
Front or Killed By Death comps.

Saw Guitar Wolf in Green Bay a few nights ago. Gotta say, they were
great. Go see them if you get a change.

Also, I'm thinking I am going to be following this Headcoats/Makers tour
for about a week or so, I figure it'll be a decent vacation type of
thing. BUT.. me being only 20 and not being able to for sure get into
my hometown show(Minneapolis) even, I was thinking about perhaps driving
to Green Bay a day early to see the Pleasure Fuckers and Nashville Pussy.
I figure since I won't be able to for sure get in to see the Makers, I
might as well see a couple of different bands given this chance. What
I'm wondering though, do the Pleasure Fuckers and Nashville Pussy put on
a decent show? I haven't heard any record from either band, so I have no
idea what either are like.
