To Matt Cohen--

The Fun Things were indeed from Australia; Brad Shepherd of the soon-to-be
late great Hoodoo Gurus played in them and sang the one song I know, "Rock
and Roll Kamikaze." Check out www.hoodoogurus.com and you'll lots of people
who can fill you in better than I.

Okay, I guess I opened a can of worms here. I _was_ going to go for the
music. That is the whole reason I asked. Sure, if there had been girls at
either show, fine. I would've been there to dig the bands as always. Of
course considering how the weekend turned out, I ended up screwing myself
out of what might have been a really good show either way.

Didn't mean to make myself out to be some sort of pathetic loser. I should
have just left it at "Thanks for all the recommendations, but I didn't get

Subject: Fun Things

Matt Cohen asked about Fun Things, well here's what a couple of people
posted about them a while back on another list (Divine Rites)...
(I hope they don't mind me quoting their posts!)

Be seeing you,
Bill
- ----------------------------------------
From what I know, they only had one official record, which was the e.p.
entitled "The Fun Things". It had a cover with a silohuette picture of the
four members with "Fun Things" across their chests. The 4 tracks on it
are "When The Birdmen Fly", "I Ain't Got Time Enough For Love",
"Lipstick", and "Savage". Per Ian, there were only 500 of them pressed,
and they cost a bloody fortune now.

The single on the French Sonics label is a bootleg, although it's a nice
one. It takes only the "Lipstick" and "Savage" cuts. Why they didn't do
the whole ep, or barring that, at least include "When The Birdmen Fly",
which is for my money the best of the four tracks, is beyond me.

In the Prehistoric Sounds article, Brad says that the whole ep was
bootlegged in Canada with the cover in grey instead of black.

Sonics also released several other similar boots, including the Eastern
Dark's first Waterfront single and a couple of Screaming Tribesmen
singles. All have different sleeves from the Aussie releases.

"When The Birdmen Fly" also appeared on a bootleg lp of rare Australian
classics; I'm not where I can get at my lps right now, so I can't recall
which one...there's one called "Where Birdmen Flew", and I think that's
the one that has the cut. There's another called "It Happened But
Nobody Noticed". Both these are great records with a batch of really
rare tracks by essential old Aussie bands.

Somebody mentioned the Aliens as a pre-cursor to the Fun Things...they
were active in 1978-79 and included Brad and Murray Shepherd and
John Hartley. In between them and the Fun Things was a band called
the Phantom Agents, who included the Shepherds, Graeme Beavis, and
Mark Lock (future Swedish Rhythm Kings and then Died Pretty bassist).
Later in 1979, Hartley came back and replaced Lock, and that became
the Fun Things. (This is from the Birdman/Hitmen/Died Pretty/etc/etc
family tree in Harry Butler's DNA #49 from APril, 1986. He says that he
had an article about the Fun Things and Aliens in DNA #35, but I don't
have that issue.)

After the Fun Things, the Aliens were revived with the original lineup
during 1980. This didn't last long, and Brad joined the 31st for a short
period in late summer of 1980. His next move was to the Hitmen through
late 1982, at which time he joined the Hoodoo Gurus. While in the Hitmen
he also found time to play with Super K in the summer of 1982.

Murray Shepherd and John Hartley were part of the original Screaming
Tribesmen along with Ron Peno and Mick Medew. The played with the
Tribesmen from Oct 1981 until June of 1984, with a breakduring the
second half of 1983 while Medew played in a band called Wolfgang.

MacFarlane asked Shepherd about Dave Laing's interest in re-issuing
the Fun Things ep on Dog Meat in his interview, and Brad sad "Nah, as
long as I still find them (the songs) as offensive as I do now, there's no
way on earth that record is gonna be reprinted."

Rob Younger has also said that he doesn't like "Waiting World"/"Face A
New God", and I think those are two absolutely great songs. At least
they did get reissued, although the quantity isn't anywhere near
adequate.

Hope this helps.

the fun things were 'bullet' brad sheppard's band in brisbane who
released one four track ep in 1980. a one time pressing of 500, two of
the songs, 'lipstick' and 'savage' were reissued on 45 by sonics records
in france in 1986 (sonics was also licensing some product from citadel at
the time, like the screaming tribesmen and the new christs). the other
two tracks, 'let the birdmen fly' and 'time enough for love' appeared on
the bootleg lp 'australian underground' that came out around the same
time. the entire ep was bootlegged in canada a couple years back.

all four songs feature ridiculously over the top guitar work courtesy of
brad with plenty of sneering vocals and macho-man type sentiments. i'd
love to get my hands on an original if anyone happens to possess an
extra copy lying about....

I recently got 2 CDs "Murder Punk vol 1&2 - the Australian
Years". On Murder Punk label from Tasmania.
They include the Fun Things EP, plus many more incredible good
Australian bands from 77-80 years (Victims, Razr, Suicide Squad,
Babeez, Thought Criminals, Psycho Surgeons, Scientists, Chosen Few,
News, Leftlovers) They really deserve to be known. IMHO the Fun
Things tracks are the best.

Here is also included what was discussed earlier on the Divine Rites
List. Hope it helps.

I've heard these stories, too. All I can say is I interviewed Dick a
couple of years ago, and he was plenty cool to me. Sure, he talked
about himself, and it was hard to get a word in edgewise, and he can
come off as a bit of an egomaniac, but I mean, hell...he's Dick Dale! I
mean, I guess I was somewhat starstruck in that I couldn't believe I
was talking to him. He did not refer to himself as "the godfather of
heavy metal," though. In a related note, i picked up that Phantom
Surfers "Survival of the Fattest" EP with the fake Dick Dale interview
on it, and it is a somewhat close (although a little exagerated) spoof
of Dale, but you can tell it's not him, just some guy doing a good
imitation.

Still, Buck Ormsby of the Wailers still holds the title of being "a
complete dick" to us about the Wailers thing in Cryptic Tymes #5. What
a jerk that guy can be. Oh, and the Droogs are coming up on a close
second for being complete liars about themselves in our supposed
"complete Droogs story" in DTP #1. Email us if you want the scoop.

You're right about those Murder Punk CDs - they're the best punk
comps to come out since the good editions of Killed By Death. Get 'em now.
To my knowledge, Fun Things put out only two 7"s in their lifespan
- - "When The Birdmen Fly b/w (I Ain't Got) Time Enough For Love" and
"Lipstick b/w Savage". The latter single is pretty hard to find, but not
_extremely_ rare... but good luck finding "Time Enough For Love" at an
affordable price unless you're one of these $100 single collectin' types.
Teengenerate and the Vikings covered "Savage," and the Devil Dogs
did "Time Enough For Love." My band the Stallions also used to cover
"Savage" live. I'm sure that other groups have as well.
All 4 of their songs are awesome classic snotty punk. Great
mean-spirited lyrics, great vocals, nasty guitar. Long live the Fun Things!

He will have to go some to fill the original drummers shoes (name
escapes me), who really shines on the version of 'Laugh Laugh' that is
on the Rhino Shindig video. I gotta get the box set and retire my old
     vinyl.

If someone from the list does go to the show, please post a review!

This is pretty obvious, but BOMP is a pretty cool place!
They're not paying me to say this, and ! want 10% off my next order! but Bomp
has always been super cool to me with my orders. They're fast, with the most
reasonable prices I've found, and on the very rare occasion I've received a
wrong item they're replaced it quickly with no hassle whatsoever.I wish they'd
stock more sixties psych, but otherwise they're great.Norton is cool too.

For Birdman, Silverchair have covered "New Race" with Deniz Tek
playing guest guitar on a "Freak" CD single.
The cover is fine, and owe much to the Deniz guitar. If the royalties
could help the Birdman doing a new record, it's OK for me.
For the Rifles, i don't know, but really would like to hear the
cover. There is not so much Rifles covers.

But IMNSHO, the "original" Silverchair songs are too much servile
copy from "you know who".

Yep, Peoria's kind of a long haul from St. Louis, especially on a weeknight.
I'll see if we can get a show down in Springfield with the Aquavelvets sometime.
Playing St. Louis would be great, but I'd have to check with the other guys to
see if it's cool with them. May 18 is a Sunday night, and may be kinda iffy
because most of the band has to get up the next morning and go to work. I'll
check it out, though. We're playing with the Hentchmen, Oblivians, and Dirt
Bombs Friday, May 16 at the Gallery in Normal, by the way.

For anybody else that is considering making the New Bomb Turks show, it starts
at 7:30 and it costs $5 at the door.

Anybody with a soundcard/speakers should stay up and listen to kopper's show,
"the wayback machine," out of St. Louis. I listen every week now, and it's
frickin' cool. Monday nights, 12-2AM central time.

That's cool. My apologies for coming off like a total asshole. Remember,
Guitar Wolf's playing Normal tomorrow night. I'll buy you a beer and introduce
you to all the groovy girls if you show up.

Yep. It's true. Not so sure about the Rifles cover, but silverchair
(Australia's biggest embarrasment since Jimmy Barnes), certainly have
covered Birdman's "New Race". Dunno if it appears on any of their records
but they apparently do it live...
