Hey Cool!
The Monks were all ex-US Marines who made some of the most discordant
music of the sixties. They lrft the US Army in Germanu and started
playing in Hamburg. At first they were a standard pre-Beatles cover grou
until they became a wierd cross between Pre Beatles beat,Nihilstic
Tendencies and total ineptitude, they pioneered what they called über
beat, a kind of hypercharged frat rock. The drummer played with almost
no cymbals and a banjo was used to create a kind of wierd percussive
edge. You can fine the Monks reissued on American Records and there is
an excellent book that Half a Cow has instock. It's recomended because
it really is one of the great rock biographies. These guys are beyond
most modern music, check out their attemps at psychedelia!! ANYWAY

Alan,

The title of the CD is Songs of Rememberance by the Modern Lovers
Punk Vault (PVCD 1003). I scored my copy of it at Subterranean
Records in NYC (formerly known as Hideout Records owned by Scott C.)
It's got 18 tracks...it's pricey but worth it. Also in the Punk
Vault Series for those interested is Joy Division - Digital Glass
(PVCD 1001) with 20 Tracks & Pere UBU (PVCD 1002). The Pere UBU
has alot of dropouts in it, but still is pretty intense considering
there aren't too many tapes circulating.

If it hasn't made it to your area, try Goldmine in one of those
bootleg columns.....

See ya
Vic

Yeah, it's on Sunset about 2 or 3 miles east of the 101 and has some cool
items. I think it's called AntiChrist (like her new project) There is also a
better store next to hers run by an guy from the old punk scene. He has a
hilarious chickencoop display in back housing all the old flyers of punk shows
from the late 70's to early 80's. When I was there he even had a mannequin
resembling Darby Crash. He sells 60's and 70's toys and memorabilia pretty
cheap.
You might check out Hollywood book and poster on Hollywood Blvd.
They have some cool old movie posters, although the popular ones can be a bit
expensive.
I found some cool movie photos directly across the street from there (I can't
recall the name of the place). Anyways behind the counter they had a massive
filing cabinet. I simply gave them the name of the movie. i.e. It's a bikini
world' and he brought back a handful of original black & white photo stills
from the flick. The cool thing was they were all 3 or 4 bucks each. (note:
take movie names with you, they have no index)
A place to check out if you haven't been there is 'Chick-a-boom' on
Melrose. It's pricey but man they have the coolest memorabilia ever from the
50's-70's....Stuff you just never see! Really expensive, but a must see if
you're into that kinda stuff.
     Good luck Tony

your shows of the year!!! Of course, you traveled a bit more than I did; I
think you had a year this year like I did in 1996!

My shows of the year: ? & the Mysterians (in Detroit/Gutterfest and New
York/Cave Stomp); the Hate Bombs at Gutterfest; SCOTS here in Cambridge; the
Cramps and Guitar Wolf in Boston (I was really unimpressed by the Doll Rods);
the Bomboras in Boston and Providence; the Nomads in NY/Cave Stomp; Fortune &
Maltese in Detroit/Gutterfest; thee Headcoats and the Makers in Detroit and in
Boston; oh boy I don't know how many more I can come up with. I didn't go out
to too many shows, but there were very few disappointments!

I have a question: in the song "I'm Gonna Make You Mine" by the Shadows
of Knight, does the line go "Girl, I want you bared/So be prepared" or
"Girl, I want you bad/So be prepared?" It's not that much of a
difference but the former does put a nastier edge to the song.

Exene's store is called You've Got Bad Taste-it has lots of weird stuff for
sale and also a "punk rock museum". The record store next door is called
Destroy all Music (213-663-9300) 3818 Sunset Blvd. and he sells tons of
cool punk rock garage etc.

I don't know if it's the same band you're looking for, but ...
I have a couple of great songs on tape by a band called the Monks. They were
either from Canada or Britain in the late 70's. My friend Paul has the album -
the cover shows a sexy girl in a monk's habit. My favorite songs off the lp
are "Drugs in my pocket," "Out of work musician," and "Nice legs, shame about
her face." Every song has some sort of biting humor to the lyrics and the
melodies are terrific catchy poppy punk. The reason why I think they may be
Canadian, or were released on a Canadian label is 'cause my friend who owns
the record came from upstate NY and said they used to get airplay on stations
over the border (which is also where he bought the lp.)

I hope this helps!

I am pretty sure it's "Girl, I want you bad."
The Shadows of K are good at that sort of Louie-mumble. I used to think in
the line "The white collar worker / or the digger in the ditch" from Sometimes
Good Guys Don't Wear White, that "digger" was actually (gasp) the N-word!
