The Monks were Richard Hudson and John Ford who were members of the
STRAWBS, a fabulous English folk/progressive rock band in the early to
mid 1970's. Led by Dave Cousins , the band also featured (pre-Yes) Rick
Wakeman on keyboards. After the Strawbs, Rick and John formed HUDSON AND
FORD who had some commercial success in the mid to late 70's.

A lot of "obscure" English bands released albums and toured Canada
regularly in the early 1970's. If they made it here, then possibly their
label would give them a shot at a U.S. release deal. We got to see
Budgie, Nazareth, Nektar and the Peter Gabriel version of Genesis.

I can't answer the "Nice Legs,..." question, however, a friend of my
brother's recalls seeing them on British TV. They were dressed in robes
and the drummer was beating on the drum cases!

The flip of the single was, "You'll be the Death of Me".

I don't know if people do this often, but when I was in L.A. a couple years
ago I called Bomp, which is a mail order warehouse and not a store, and Suzy
Shaw said to come on down and browse. Talk about being a kid in a candy
store. The Bomp catalog is full of goodies, but the warehouse had tons of
stuff (mags, 45s) that couldn't possibly fit into the catalog. I think I spent
about three hours looking at stuff while the Bomp staff filled mail orders in
the office area. One of most fun record shopping experiences I've had and the
Bomp folks are extremely friendly as well. I'd recommend it to anyone who
regularly mail orders from Bomp. But like I said, the place isn't a store and
I don't know if they regularly have people drop by in person, so call first.

I don't know if it was ever re-released. I'm going to call my friend who has
the original lp's and find out what label they were on originally.

The Monks were from Britain and were made up of members of the
progressive rock band the Strawbs trying to do a New Wave thing. Sorry,
but I always thought they were horrible.

Yes, I was planning on getting it on Friday but I had a unexpectedly
super busy day at work and didn't get my usual hour lunch break, and
then right after work I had to bust home, eat dinner, take a shower and
go load our equipment up for a gig my band had at a bar downtown. I
will go get it probably on Monday. I'm sure it'll still be there since
it's been there for months.

So, I called my friend Paul who has one of the two Monks albums and he gave me
the lowdown. The Monks were a British band released on Canadian EMI. The
albums were never released in America, only available in the U.S. as imports.
He went out and bought their first lp, "Dirty Habits," because they got heavy
rotation on Toronto radio stations in the early 80's. In Paul's humble opinion
"the second album isn't worth looking for." He said there are only a couple of
good songs on it. As far as CD re-issues, I haven't a clue. And "Skylab" is on
the Dirty Habits lp.

Hope this helps!

Subject: Tee & The Crumpets shows

Hi all, I've been lurking for a while, but I'm doing a little promotion
for Tee & The Crumpets, so I'll break my silence.

Tee & The Crumpets are a good old-fashioned garage punk band in San
Francisco, they've played a few Purple Onion shows to some acclaim, and
promise to get something out in February or March. The lineup is Tee
Emmerich (Portland, OR formerly of Drivetrain) Chris Wallace
(Washington, DC - The Vacant Staircase), Paul Sheridan (Ottawa, Canada -
The Flukes) and Tom Ward (San Diego - The Gravedigger V, Saturn V, etc.
etc.)

Anyways, currently booked shows in San Francisco are:

Jan 31st (Saturday) - The Edinburgh Castle with The Ravens
Feb 6th (Friday) - The Purple Onion with The Dukes of Hamburg

More details, a wave, pictures and our mailing list at
http://www.bitey.com/crumpets/

I'll go back to lurking now if that's OK?
