I received a review on the Divine Rites-L. It sounds like they are
awake and kicking !

Pasted from Richard :
How many list folks went to this gig? It was cool, better than the
ones a few months back IMO. Played heaps of early stuff, including, in
as close to cronological order as my memory serves (buggered if I can
remember much of the set order), "1, 2, 5" (which was the set
opener), "Can't wait long" (which got me into the Spiders in the first
place, way back when...), "Slave Girl" (minus chains), "Beyond the
Fringe", "Out of Control", "Save my soul", "Action Woman", "Volatile",
"Test Pattern", "Weirdo Libido", then more later period stuff which I
didn't really know too well.

Playing as a five piece, to quite a small audience. Mick called Bill
Gibson up on stage for "Slave Girl", but he refused. Pther notables in
the audience as well. Surprisingly it was a mixed audience, some old,
some young. The mix was pretty good, but we were near the desk.
Started at around 8:15, finished around 9:25 when Gerard (I'm assuming
it was) blew his amp. Mick said they were going to play until 10pm.

Nothing seemed forced, and the guitar work was reminiscent of their
heyday, no stretching, just cool licks. With Lawson back on drums,
everything seemed to kick along mighty fine. A couple of mistakes
through the night, but all up pretty tight, except the new bass
player, who had trouble starting "Save my soul" (tried three times).

With mid-song banter about Mick getting a cactus, a street directory
and some tic-tacs for Christmas, they all looked like they were
enjoying themselves. If this lineup remains, they'll be well worth
seeing in January when they start touring.

I ordered mine from CD Universe for $54. It seemed pretty straight forward
on their site, and I saved between $12-$14 on prices I've seen locally.

Subject: a record crate substitution

in response to Kopper's search for record crates, all i have to say is good
luck. about 3 years ago i wasted 2 days looking through goldmine, going to
several collector's shops, asking around at a record convention, and calling
around and couldn't find them.

i finally settled on some small bookshelves from target. i've gotten several
people to convert from crates (or my old cinder block and plywoodsystem) to
bookshelves. the best ones i've found (i looked everywhere) are 3 shelves with
each shelf is about 13" high, 11" deep, and about 3 feet wide. the 11" deep
make them perfect to pull records out. if memory serves me right, each one
holds 4 or 5 large crates full of records. they come to about 4 feet tall,
which was perfect for me to put my stereo equipment on top of. i just bought
another one at target a few onths ago (thirty five bucks i think), so they
should still be there.

i hope this helps. obviously if you're looking for something portable i just
wasted a few inches of you e-mail reading. i know how frustrating it is to
find a good system for music (my CDs are in a different kind of bookshelves
now). i just need to find something good to hold 7" 's.

the 7" solution is EASY!

Call Bags Unlimited (1-800-767-BAGS), send email (bags@frontiernet.net )or
visit their web page

	http://www.frontiernet.net/~bags/

get a catalog. They have very sturdy (and designed to be portable)
corrugated cardboard boxes specifically for 45's. They're about 15" long,
8" high and 7.5" wide. I love them.

They also have LP boxes, but I don't think they're great for keeping your
personal collection in, unless you set your records up like at a record
show/store.

Here's an idea, make your own record crates! The old pine crates we all
miss so dearly are nothing more than a series of slats nailed onto a simple
frame. If you've got a saw, a hammer and some nails, all you'd have to do
is hit the local lumber yard and get a bunch of wood (of your choice,
even!) and make them to taste. You don't have to be a master craftsman or
Charles Eames to do this.

The Sins final NYC show was December 27th and it was nothing short of
INCREDIBLE. They played for three flippin' HOURS. (And this was *after*
Sit N'Spin went on at 11 and Yang Dust at 12.) Also very cool was that
20+ people from the Bethlehem, PA crowd actually chartered a bus for the
occasion.

I won't be making the Philly show, as I've got various other activities on
the rock'n'roll calendar for that evening. And, seeing as how my
girlfriend's flying back from SF the next morning at 5:40 AM, Philly just
might not be one of my better ideas. HOWEVER, I *will* be hitting the
Sins hometown farewell gig on Friday night at the Funhouse. That should
be pretty crazed.

Also, I quite enjoyed seeing the "original" Creatures reunion on Dec. 26th
at the Funhouse. Not quite as great as back at that time, but still lotsa
fun. JT may actually stick around and help Mark out till Mr. Smith finds
a whole new band. However, Mark's found at least one new guitar player
already - Don "Shaggy" Snook, ex of the Swingin' Neckbreakers.

Oh yeah, JT asked me if I thought he should keep going... I told him OF
COURSE. But with a different name. He asked how I felt about the name
"The Losers." I said I thought it was great, but I'd think it would've
been used a few times. Well... anyway, he wants to continue, tho'
probably as a trio.

Is this the series that has tracks by Detroit bands like the Up
and the Rationals? Any pre-Capitol label vintage Bob Seger
stuff?

And where can I get copies?

Subject: great nyc punk book--

i'm not sure if anyone on the bomp list has mentioned this book
before, but i finally picked up a copy of "Please kill me"--
documentary, all interviews, of nyc punk scene, from the velvets
up through the 80s. interviews were done by legs mcneil. anyone
into nyc (and detroit) music from the late 60s and 70s should pick
this up (make sure and get the version that's in paperback--it has
some essential corrections and several extra pages of interviews).
lots of great dirt on pretty much everyone involved in the nyc
music and art scenes (after reading about iggy and his unbelievable
exploits, i find it amazing that he's still alive).

after reading the book, i've got a couple of questions some of the
more knowledgeble cats on this list may be able to answer:

1. how did jerry nolan die? it talks about johnny thunders right
up to the end, but is kinda vague on how/why nolan ends up in the
hospital and what he dies of. was he a junkie right up til he died
(like thunders)? the book doesn't go into details on when they
stopped playing together and whether nolan continued to use drugs
after thunders died.

2. does anyone have any thoughts on james williamson from the
stooges? am i confused or didn't someone on this list mention that
he is some kind of suit & tie businessman now? pretty much all the
people interviewed in the book portray him in a very negative,
opportunistic light.

deteriorated from the drugs, etc.

The last couple years, Jerry was playing drums in Sylvain
Sylvain's group, The Ugly Americans, who also included (for awhile,
anyway), Graham May (bassist for NY mid-80s garage stalwarts, The Vipers)

As to the book, Please Kill Me, I thought it was good, but not
great... A bit disjointed, I guess. Not completely what I might've
wanted. But pretty good, anyway.

About 12 years ago I had picked up a few LP's on the Eva label - New Mexico
Punk From The 60's, Texas Punk From The 60's, Florida Punk From The 60's. Is
anyone familiar with this series and can anyone point me in the direction of
CD versions of these LP's or their contents?

Thanks,

The CDs are called "Sixties Archives," and each contains two of the old LPs.

CD #1 = Sounds of the Sixties double LP
CD #2 = Texas Punk #1 + #2
CD #3 = Louisiana Punk #1 + #2
CD #4 = Florida Punk + New Mexico Punk
CD #6 = Texas & Michigan Psychedelia (the Michigan stuff is CD only)
CD #7 = Michigan Punk (CD only)
CD #8 = Acid Trip & Heavy Sound For Psychic Minds (the Heavy Sound material
	is CD only)

I can send the complete track listings off-list if you want.

Whoops, missed Sixties Archives #5 in the list I just sent. It's the
equivalent of the vinyl albums "Finest Hours of U.S. 60s Punk" and the "Punk
Ballads Sampler."

corrugated cardboard boxes specifically for 45's. They're about 15" long,

Yeah Brian is correct, I get these as well. Thy're great for 45's, I use them
also to transport LP's, but at home I have the LP's on do it yourself shelf
units courtesy of Home Depot. Bags unlimited also carries(last i checked) the
thicker plastic sleeves that I had only seen in Europe prior. These thick
plastic sleeves are ultra glossy and of course cost more, but man, they make
your LPs or PSleeve 45's look awsesome.

Sorry, for my money (or not) the best crates for holding your vinyl were
created by the dairy industry. Yup, behold the all mighty milk crate!
Often duplicated never equaled...for strength you can't beat 'em. Stand
'em upright, they fit yer 12" slabs and on its side, 7" and 10" records
do well. They even come in a wide variety of decorative colors and the
price is right too. Available behind stores everywhere.

I was trying to avoid doing this, seeing as how I have very little spare
time to be playing around with umpteen different sizes of wood slats,
although I do prefer wooden record crates to the plastic milk crate
variety. I'm just picky like that when it comes to my vinyl. I just
can't believe no one sells those wooden record crate kits anymore! I
emailed Bags Unlimited to see about theirs (thanks!), but this looks
like a good entrepreneurial idea to me! Maybe I'll quit my job and go
into business... heh heh.

I think I have some of this stuff on tape. Pretty good comps! I wouldn't

The WWC are a couple guys from Soundgarden, and a guy who used to be in
Monstermagnet. They play some real cool psych stuff, with some garage
influences as well. They also have another band called Hater. You can
find out some more info from this homepage:

	www.engr.uvic.ca/~cmackenz/wellwater/

Cool band - it really surprised me to hear where the members are from.

Midnight carries these, but who else?
Who else besides Midnight, Sundazed, Bomp, and Norton carries garage / psych
and is on the web?
