I really liked "Please Kill Me" -- I liked the format (quotes, not written
like a story in paragraphs) a lot, and I couldn't put it down once I picked
it up.

So what do they sound like? I'm more into psych stuff, so how
about a bit on #6 and #7? How do they compare to my newest
faves, "Overdose of Heavy Psych" and "Heavy Dose of Lyte Psych"

Also, doest the Michigan Punk album have any of the stars

I don't know if Jon's actually *managing* Question Mark or not,
but he is bringing him in to the studio that he and ex-Vipers'
guitarist/organist Dave Mann run in Manhattan (Krispy Kreme). It's being
done on spec, tho'... there's no label waiting for the record. Jon's just
hoping to generate some interest. The recording is actually why they're
doing the shows... Jon set them up to help defray the group's cost in
making the trip.

I think ? already has a manager, but Jon just wants things to
help make things happen.

Try http://www.ikea.com. Enter, follow the links for a store near
you. Then choose your country and it'll tell you where they are. Also,
each location will tell you the address and a phone # and (I think) their
hours.

Here's a listing of where they are in the US:
	 Baltimore
         Houston
         Los Angeles (Burbank)
         Los Angeles (Carson)
         Los Angeles (City of Industry)
         Los Angeles (Tustin)
         New Jersey (Elizabeth)
         New York (Long Island)
         Philadelphia
         Pittsburgh
         Seattle
         Washington (Woodbridge)

Thanks for the info on the boxes at IKEA... I'll have to check those
out... personally, I like to use their expandable shelving for records,
CDs, singles, books, stereo, TV, etc.

Here is a topic that about a year ago I wrote about in some detail on this
very mailing list but I'll try and remember the facts. Basically I went to
my local record collectors shop in Hackensack, NJ which is where I usually
purchase all of my record supplies. This pop shop caters mostly to the Doo
Wop and oldies audiance and they have a rather large selection of singles and
supplies but I stray from the topic. The store sold singles white singles
boxes with lids...the ones that were about 18"x7.5"x7.5" and they cost around
$5.00 each. Because I was planning on moving around 4000 singles I realized
that I was going to go broke really quickly. On the suggestion of a friend
of mine I stopped by one of the many comic book shops that litter the land to
check out what kind of things that they sold and sure enough I walk out with
product. The comic book shop sold the same style white box with lid but it
measured 36"x7.5"x10" and the boxes sold for only $3.00 each! so they do
take up a little more room in height but for my money it is well worth the
space. As for shipping boxes for albums I always use the Ryder book boxes
that fit albums just fine.

perfect to pull records out.>>>

Here is a topic that anyone with a large collection has to deal with on a
daily basis how to store records in the house or worse yet in a one bedroom
apartment with a new wife...ooops that's just my life. We've got around
13,000 records (evenly split between 7" singles, LP's and CDs) lining the
walls of our one bedroom apartment in Hoboken and it is a little tight. I've
been thinking changing from the white Home Depot shelving units that four
usable shelves and then one extra little shelf at the top that holds video
tapes. One of hte real problems with this unit is that there is loads of
extra room on above the unit that could probably hold at least one or two
more "shelves" worth of records. Just recently I've been thinking of getting
some kind of floor to ceiling units made because I'm running out of
space...and the wife wants a china cabinet...now that would be a waste of
space :}

Custom shelving seems to be the way to go these days. I still have some
crates waiting for the real estate to hold them, but if I ever do move to a
house, I should probably just make some sturdier custom shelves. Check out
the pictures in the INCREDIBLY STRANGE MUSIC books. Once you start reaching
the multi-thousand point in LPs, this is probably as cost-efficient a
solution as anything else.

I did once make replicas of the little 45 crates that Peaches and other
stores used to sell. It was a lot of work and mess for someone that doesn't
have a full time workshop in their home.

While nobody seems interested in supplying storage for the dead LP format,
there are a couple of manufacturers making storage units for laserdiscs,
which are the exact same size as LPs. Unfortunately, these units are all
extremely overpriced, catering to the elitist laserdisc community (who
usually don;t have that many discs anyway).

As for plastic milk crates -- it's even hard to get these nowadays. If you
go to record shows, you'll see that the dealers (except for the ones using
cardboard boxes) all have store-bought plastic crates that are deeper than
the albums, which is essential for safe stacking and transport. But if you
try to buy them now, all you'll probably see for dsale are ones that leave
an inch of the album covers exposed.

of the most unpleasant people I have ever met. He was so unfriendly in fact,

properties that he couldn't legally buy, so he would have friends like

He alienated his daughter with his outspokenness against gay marrige, and is

Subject: Vince Fiorino Trio???

Anyone know anything about this?

It's a 45 on Okeh -- I'm guessing late 50's to early 60's. The label is purple
with sort of gold lettering, and the music is definitely in the wild & wacky
zone. Number appearing on both sides is 4-6947. The ensemble is called The
Vince Fiorino Trio.

A-side (I guess) info:
(ZSP 13031)
"Red Canary (Indian Song)"
Vocal by Millie Coury and Lon Saxon
composer credit: Fiorini
Instrumentation is wild tuba, sprightly electric organ and kling klang
percussion. Male/female duet vocals over top, with lyrics encouraging a red
canary to keep singing as an aid to their wooing.

Chorus lyrics:
"Red canary sing a song -- Red canary chirp along."

But given the era (cold war, reds in the bed), I almost wonder if it's a
subliminal communist propaganda song -- especially when the line: "In the
future we'll be free." pops in totally out of nowhere. Huh?!?

B-side info:
(ZSP 13034)
"Tuba Square Dance"
Vocal by Arki, The Arkansas Woodchopper
composer credit: Fiorino -- then kind of scratched up, maybe Christian
This is a wacked-out square dance kind of thing. It adds a drumkit, even more
percussion, banjo and maybe a little electric guitar to the mix -- plus duck
calls at the end. The tuba is still trilling wildly up and down the scales --
what lungs! It sort of reminds me of Macy Skipper's "Goofin' Off" except
without the sophisticated repartee. Sounds like two men and one woman on vocals
this time.

Sampling the lyrics (mostly spoken, square dance style):

"Arkansas, you big fat cat -- Hit that high note in yer hat."

the woman:
"I wish I was with Arkansas, a settin' on a rail
a sweet potato in my hand and a 'possum by the tail.
Arkansas! He bit me!"

"Hey Sam, fetch a burlap sack to plug up that dad-blamed tuba!"

Anyone know anything about these folks? Thanks.

There are a few places you could check out. The easiest thing to do is to
visit the following web resource and look under Online Stores and Record
Labels. BTW the page has just been tidied up and a few new links added ie
Sonic Mood Set, The Hatebombs etc.

Question for Alex P : What happened to the Coffee'n'Smokes web page? Is
there a new address you could give me?

The Monks CD is available from Metro Music 301-622-2473. It is called
"Filthy Habits" and is their 1st LP. It does include "Nice Legs, Shame
About Her Face" & "Skylab". It is one of my fave LPs of all time.

On a personal note, I went with Kim Kane (Slickee Boys) to see the
Strawbs in DC at the 930 Club about 10 years ago. When we went into the
dressing room and asked about getting our Monks records autographed,
they freaked out (Hudson & Ford, that is). We asked what happened to
their lead singer - he was doing sound that very night for the Strawbs!
He was really happy to see that we had those records. As soon as he
entered the dressing room, Ford held up the 1st LP and the singer said
:"It's Top Of The Pops!" just as he did on the LP (on the song "Johnny
Be Rotten").

Y'know, I just brought home a milk crate from work and LPs don't fit in
it. Maybe different parts of the country use different sizes of gallon
containers(ha, yeah right) but it still might be worth someone's time to
look into it as the milk crates I have access to are only about 1/2" too
small.

Hello, Bompers,

It seems to be a regular request lately, and so I'll do my part:

I will be in SanFran the weekend of the 16/17/18 of this month. Anything
noteworthy going on?

Also, I will be in Tampa the last half of February: Likewise?

Ta much!

him mad at me (by switching to a new manager), even if I WAS going to come

Hi

I've done a bit of moving over the last few years, and had occasion
to move my lp's a few times.

The people who I do my shipping with - Ansett Ridgeway from Australia
- - have a 'standard' sized carton intended for books that is
*perfect* for lp's.

(Actually, they have a 'standard' carton that is about 0.3 cubic meters
- - their book carton is about half of that)

Internally, it measures about 12 1/2 inches wide and 14 inches high
and is about 20 inches long - so it holds about 100 lp's.

I've kept my collection on the move in these things for quite a while.

Now the people at Ansett Ridgeways tell me that this carton is based
on an industry standard so nearly all *international* shippers should
have cartons about the same size.

They cost about $3 each, try calling your local supplier.

Reccommended.

James

Are you using the square ones or the rectangular ones. The square ones
are too small. The rectangular ones, tho', fit in at least one
direction... I thought they fit in both, tho'... Of course, I probably
won't check till I move again.

I think #6 is in the same league as "Heavy Psych," though the sound
quality isn't as good. The tracks by Mechanical Switch, Yesterday's
Obsession, the Bourbons and the Free are all must-haves, and little of the
rest will disappoint. You'll recognize "Silence in the Morning" by Glass Sun
from "Heavy Psych," and Preston's "This World Is Closing In On Me" from
"Lyte Psych."
Volume 7 is almost all garage, and pretty obscure at that. The only
"stars" from the Michigan scene that show up are SRC (as The Old Exciting
Scot Richard Case) and The Pack (after Terry Knight left the fold). If it's
psych you're after, you'd probably like #8 better. The first half is made up
of very well-known punk/psych (Caretakers of Deception's "Cuttin' Grass,"
Faine Jade's "It Ain't True," etc), while the second half contains cuts from
obscure psych albums by bands like St. Steven, the Paisleys, Hunger, and so
on.

Hello Hitomi and Freddy,
Did you spot the "bachman" in the URL for Legend Records? That is Randy
Bachman of
the first generation Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO). He
also has a website for his "Guitarchives" label that is dedicated to
jazz guitar legend Lenny Breau.

On a sad note, Kurt Winter ("American Woman" etc.), who replaced Randy
in the Guess Who died in Winnipeg just before Christmas. Burton Cummings
and other former bandmates were at the funeral. If anyone is interested
I could post some of the details from the newspaper reports.
