I missed the first one, tho' The Platterpuss said it was quite the event.
And, unfortunately, this week there's a TON going on in the Northeast that
evening...

Saturday night in the Northeast:
Providence, RI - ? & the Mysterians
NYC party - debut of the NYC version of The Baskervilles (Hope it's a wild
one, Rob!)
Nightingales (NYC) - The Fleshtones
Khyber Pass (Philly) - The Original Sins final show
Court Tavern (New Brunswick, NJ) - The Upper Crust
Melody Bar (New Brunswick, NJ) - The Insomniacs at the Hub City Soul Club
(with DJ Bill Luther - ex-Smashed Blocked 'zine ed. - spinning cool Mod,
R'n'B, soul, rocksteady, old ska, etc.)

I'll also miss the third Fleshtones show at Nightingales (a place I really
don't much like)... that's the night (1/17) that Coney Island High
features The Secret Service, The Prissteens, The Lyres, The Swingin'
Neckbreakers, and ? & the Mysterians.

However, I *WILL* make it to Nightingales for 1/24. And 1/31, I guess.

<< Then there was a cd called Michigan Mayhem, which is a recent issue by the
guy who did "Let 'Em Have It," a pretty crudely done comp of stuff both
rare and not so rare. These both have more familiar (and comped elsewhere
in better sound, in some cases) artists including the Rationals
(represented by several unreleased tracks). These comps were both
mastered on audiocassettes at home, by the way. I imagine they can both
still be had through the usual sources. >>

The sound on "Let Em Have It " Cd comp is a total disgrace. You can tell the

probably sounds the worst.
The michigan mayhem is not much better.

Just about. It's a great tune. One of the overnight guys at 'MFO opens
every show with it. I don't listen to much rock & roll on the radio, but
recently I've been tuning into other rock & roll shows on college/community
radio in my area and this is pretty mellow compared to what I've been
hearing...

What are these crates made of: wood (solid or slats), plastic

Local supplier of what? I guess this goes back to what kind of

Speaking of Please Kill Me and that era, here's a rather revoltin'
development I saw in today's Daily News:

In a matter of weeks, an industrial-size restaurant will open on W. 52nd
St. in Manhattan's theme park district. It will be called max's kansas
city, lower case, just like the original... while the owners acknowledge in
a press release that "max's could never be exactly what it was," they are
also bound to honor "the dynamics of today's restaurant scene." In such a
spirit, there will be 75 television sets and a menu chock-full of
counter-culture delicacies like Lobster and Fois Gras Shepherd's Pie and
Herb Crusted Rack of Lamb with Potato Artichoke Lamb Sausage Ragout in
Black Olive Sauce.

Obviously a man of exquisite taste and breeding.

Cleanhead's earlier Mercury sides rock just as hard as the King sides on
that old Gusto comp. Pick up "Blues, boogie, & bop: the 1940s Mercury
sessions" for Cleanhead's complete output on that label, or if that's
too much (impossible!), the cream of the crop is in "The Mercury blues

As with Blair, I missed the first show last Saturday, and will be
club-hopping in New Brunswick this Saturday and attending "Cave Step" the
next. So it's down to the 24th and/or 31st for me as well.

However, I can report that the 'tones rang in the new year with vim, vigor,
and super-rock (of course). They had the honor of being onstage when the
clock struck 12, around halfway through their set, and they made the most
of it. Not wanting to miss it, they entertained the crowd during the last
5 or so minutes of 1997 by ripping through a few short pieces (about 90
seconds of "Shadow Line," for one). They played for another 30 minutes or
so after that, rocking out in accordance with the significance of the date.

The Fleshtones were preceded by Shake Appeal, a fun NYC glam-pop trio. The
Swingin' Neckbreakers wrapped up the night with a marathon 35+ song set
that featured guest vocals from Peter Zaremba on one song and the
inscrutable "T. Lance" on some others.

complete EVA releases... he doesn't have lots of trouble with EVA comps lps
that can still be easily found (at least in Europe), apart some early
stuff, like the "Magic Cube" release...but there's much more trouble with
the albums devoted to a band... the first pressing of that sort, like the
Moving Sidewalk lp, Mouse & the Traps or We The People lps are still easy
to find, but it's not the case with the last lps, wich have stayed rather
obscure and probably issued at much lower amount...so , question: Do you
know a source of information where all these lps would be listed ? It would
be of great help for him.

I hate to speak ill of the brain-dead so I probably shouldn't even respond
to this, but I'm sure the majority of list-readers here recognize Sonny
Bono as one of the more skilled pop-craftsmen of the '60s (or do you only
listen to current "garage" bands?). How many songs as classic as "Needles
and Pins," "I Got You, Babe," "It's the Little Things," "Laugh At Me,"
etc., have YOU written, Grinderman?

Easy now, Fido I was just expressing what I think is a well educated
opinion. I don't think that Bono was that much of a significant figure.
If Chuck Berry or Jerry Lee died, there would be tears oozing from
everyone's PC. I don't care about his politics, just talent, there was
none. About your "current garage" statement, I have always been partial
to the older rock 'n roll. I really can't tell you much about a lot of
current bands
All I can say is I love rock n' roll just as much as anyone on this list.
I may not have written any classics(yet) but dammit, I'm gonna keep
trying.

Respectfully yours,

As a suggestion for those who wish to escape the endless chatter about Mr.

Mexican rock & roll sensations of the sixties and seventies put together from
my recent interview with Armando Nava, as well as a sound file from the band's

copy of that album as much as I do! And that's just the start of what my

One word: MONEY. The guy made easy money with these things, and
apparently that was the most important factor in putting them out, not
preserving and sharing rare music. After I heard about the first one
being done on cassette, I expressed my view that it wouldn't be that
hard to do it on better gear, like 15 ips reel to reel or DAT, but then I
heard about the second one after the fact and I asked how it was mastered
and he blithely said "I put it all on cassette." He knows some of the
band members involved too--I just don't understand it. I mean, it would
have been EASY to do it right. Not taking any interest in the quality of
the presentation when it would be very little extra work is a disgrace in
my mind. I guess the "Mayhem" disc had better packaging than the first
one, at least.

The only group I've known called The Fad were the ones with Frank Manlin
in them. Frank later played with a really cool 60s pop sounding group
called The Ravens who, I think, were from the Philly area. Then he hooked
up with The Optic Nerve in NYC.

This group did an EP (which I've only got on tape, courtesy of Seth from
the Mockers many years ago) which is kinda cartoony Mod-pop. "It's the
latest thing, it's the latest style... The FAD!"

Sonny Bono should have never opened his mouth to sing, but I did like the
arrangement of "I Got You, Babe"(The oboe was a masterstroke!). Growing up
in the '70's, I have no nostalgia for the Sonny and/or Cher variety shows.
I am a Democrat, so I didn't care for his politics. I did like him in
"Hairspray".

The hippest thing I saw Jack Jones do was a cover of James Taylor's "Fire
and Rain". Just saw the album, don't know how it sounds; but I have
laughed about it many times. He's a mere shadow of his father Allan, who
had a far better voice.

After all this, what I REALLY want to know is:

Does anyone have Laura Taylor's address in Massachusetts? I have lost it.

"The beautiful New Yorker. It's the talk of the town." - Jack Jones in a
Chrysler commercial, apparently singing about me,

How about Bono's apearrance on "Love Boat" as Deacon Dark, the Kiss meets
King Diamond-like guy who fell in love, took off his make up, and started
playing lovey-dovey wuss music at the end.

It's a moving company. From what the guy told me, the
international industry association that most moving companies
belong to sets the sizes of the boxes. Having everyone
use the same sized boxes helps with handling and keeping
costs down.

them from a number of different companies over the years)

Don't forget that he produced the Standells first few 45's. And he was
pretty good in 'HAIRSPRAY'.

Subject: Nik Venet also dies

This is a REALLY bad week for gray eminences of the early
sixties LA scene! From Tuesday's Los Angeles Times:

Nik Venet; Record Producer for the Beach Boys

By STEVE HOCHMAN
Special to The Times

Nik Venet, credited with discovering the Beach Boys for
Capitol Records, has died of complications from treatment for
Burkitt's lymphoma. He was 61.

Venet died Friday at County-USC Medical Center, said Susan
Crawford, his partner in the independent Evening Star Records
company.

Born Nikolas Kostantinos Venetoulis on Dec. 3, 1936, in Baltimore,
Venet began his career at 17 as a writer in New York's famed Brill
Building pop song factory, where he rented a small office with Bobby
Darin. He moved to Los Angeles at 19 and went to World Pacific
Records, where he worked with monologuist Lord Buckley, then became
a staff producer and talent scout with Capitol.

In 1962 he came in contact with the Beach Boys through Murry
Wilson, who was managing the band that consisted of his sons Brian,
Carl and Dennis, along with their cousin Mike Love and neighbor Al
Jardine. The surf culture the group celebrated in their independent
single "Surfin' " was just a minor Southern California phenomenon,
but Venet took the Beach Boys into the studio and oversaw the
group's first albums, an experience Brian Wilson has credited with
helping him learn the craft of production.

Among the acts Venet subsequently signed at Capitol were Lou
Rawls, Glen Campbell, Jim Croce, the Stone Poneys (a folk trio
featuring a young Linda Ronstadt, which had a 1967 hit with
"Different Drum," written by Mike Nesmith), Fred Neil (who wrote
the song "Everybody's Talkin'" for the film "Midnight Cowboy"),
and John Stewart (whose "Daydream Believer" was a big hit for
the Monkees).

In the early 1970s he helped found United Artists Records [sic!],
working with performers ranging from Don McLean--Venet was
executive producer of his "American Pie"--to Frank Zappa.

His Evening Star Records roster includes singer-songwriters Sarah
Kim Wilde and Harriet Schock, and Venet's final project was
production of an upcoming original cast album for the off-Broadway
musical "The Last Session" composed by Steve Schalchlin.

Venet was active in civil rights causes, marching with the Rev.
Martin Luther King, Jr., and in recent years working on the
campaign to preserve Point Concepcion, held by Native Americans
to be sacred ground.

He is survived by his longtime companion Harriet Schock; his son,
Nik Venet, Jr., of Los Angeles; brothers Ted and Steve Venetoulis;
a sister, Elenie Venetoulis; and his mother, Flora Venetoulis.

A memorial is planned for 7 p.m. Friday at the Santa Monica
headquarters of the National Academy of Recording Arts &
Sciences, 3402 Pico Blvd.

(Forwarder's note: Lots of extremely interesting stuff on Venet,
Sonny Bono, Phil Spector, etc., is to be found in Barney Hoskyns's
book "Waiting for the Sun: The Story of the Los Angeles Music Scene"
(Viking, 1996), now available as a Penguin paperback).

Subject: FLESHTONES UPDATE - JAN. 1998

A WHOLE NEW SCENE

1. Intro - Festival Appearances
2. New Album - More Than Skin Deep
3. Covers Album - Hitsburg USA
4. Live Album - Cancellation
5. Compilation Appearances
6. Full Time Men - New Record Planned
7. Early Demos - Norton Records
8. Outro - Residency at Nightingales

The Fleshtones capitalised on their success at GUTTERFEST with
appearances at SLEAZEFEST and FUZZFEST in the late summer.
Although they were not featured on the bill at CAVE STOMP in NYC
during October, a Fleshtones presence was ensured by Peter who acted
as MC for both nights. Outside the USA the 'Tones made their third
visit to Italy in less than twelve months in early December. The
third trip was a great success, if short, despite the Z-man's Farfisa
organ being stolen from the back of the truck in Rome.

MORE THAN SKIN DEEP, the new album, will be released in mid-
January. In the USA the CD will appear on ICHIBAN while
TELSTAR RECORDS, a vinyl-only label based in New Jersey, will
issue the LP. EPITAPH will distribute both formats in Europe.
Artwork will vary slightly from format to format and territory to
territory. Please note that the TELSTAR release will contain a
different track order plus 'Bazooka Joe' and 'Hand For The Band'.
The EPITAPH release also includes 'Hand For The Band', but not
'Bazooka Joe'. ALL versions of the album are scheduled to be in the
shops by January 20th. Phew, here is the ICHIBAN CD track order :

I'm Not A Sissy Anymore; Laugh It Off; My Love Machine; I Wanna
Feel Something Now; Gentleman's Twist; Smash Crash; Dig In; Blow
Job; God Damn It; Dance With The Ghoulman; Anywhere You Go;
Medley: My Kinda Lovin'/The Crossroads Are Coming; Better Days.

A Super Rock friend in Illinois has heard the CD and comments : "It's
their most durable album in years, certainly, in my opinion, the best
since Ken joined. Highlights : 'Sissy' (the greatest song the
Dictators never wrote), 'Love Machine' (Stooges!), 'I Wanna Feel
Something Now,' 'Gentleman's Twist' (could be a single), 'Dig In,'
'Blow Job' (a slinky, 50s-ish, dare-I-say 'lounge-ish' instrumental
with the great Wheel Man!, this song is a real departure for the boys)
and 'Dance with the Ghoulman.' I could go on and on; I really like it
and think it's quite memorable."

Some of you will know that the FLESHTONES FAVORITES CD was
picked up by TELSTAR RECORDS and released on vinyl during the
summer. In fact the album was renamed HITSBURG USA and the
artwork totally revamped. News has recently arrived that
IMPOSIBLE RECORDS in Spain have now issued the album in
Europe with TWO bonus cuts: 'Speedy Gonzales' and 'Down On Me'.

The above flurry of activity led the 'Tones to cancel the proposed
'Live' album which was to be issued by MUSIDISC in France.
Provisionally called ACTION FIGURES, it was intended as a momentum
record and was overtaken by events once the HITSBURG USA and MORE
THAN SKIN DEEP projects took off.

As a precursor to the new album, the Fleshtones can be heard
contributing 'You Can Get Her Frankenstein' on FLAMING
BURNOUT, the Estrus fire benefit record, on MAN'S RUIN. Other
compilation appearances include 'The Return of Bazooka Joe' on
Blood Red Records and the instrumental 'Time Zone' on MONDO
BEAT on Face/Sony records in Italy. Both are slated for release in
the first half of 1998.

Last October the FULL TIME MEN finally returned to the stage. The
line-up comprised Keith, Bill, Ken and Andy York on guitar. Reaction
to the two Manhattan dates was warm and there are even plans to
make a new FTM record. At this stage it's uncertain whether they will

take the covers route or update material which didn't make it onto the

last two Fleshtones albums. Personally, it would be great to see
'Stolen', a song about Keith's old Fender Mustang, or 'Way Down Here'
finally released. Keith Streng has also put a new band together with
Andy Shernoff, Bill Milhizer, and Paul Johnson (the man behind the
board for both HITSBURG and MORE THAN SKIN DEEP out at
Compactor studios) called THE MASTER PLAN. TMP will be doing
a February or March residency at Nightingales.

Several people have mentioned that NORTON RECORDS are set to
issue an album of Fleshtones demos from 1977. True, Billy and
Miriam have discovered some early recordings in the KICKS vault and
the Fleshtones have agreed to their eventual release. However at
present there is insufficient material for a full-length disc and more

tracks are required. If you have any "historic" recordings from those

early days which you feel are worthy of a wider audience then e-mail
NORTON [nortonrec@aol.com] or write to the 'Tones at : P.O. Box
101, Peter Stuyvesent Station, New York, N.Y. 10009, USA.

Finally, throughout January the Fleshtones are playing Saturday night

residency at NIGHTINGALES in Manhattan. Plans are also currently
being made to tour behind MORE THAN SKIN DEEP from February
onwards. Finally, and in response to several e-mail messages, the
'Tones would like to reassure their friends in California that they
have NOT forgotten the West Coast and fully intend to return. OK,
that's enough information to digest this time round so I'll leave you
to hunt down the new album.
