>On" may have been a fairly swinging record but come ON!

I guess I really am on the wrong list here. Square?? The guy who was Phil
Spector's promo man at the height of his coolness, the guy who recorded
with the Wrecking Crew, the guy who bagged 16-year-old Cher (and don't tell
me she wasn't hot) while he was pushing 30??

I don't know the ages of all of you Bono-bashers, but I suspect your
primary memories were formed when they became a somewhat campy (though
certainly not talentless) TV comedy team and are somehow a slightly
embarassing memory filed in your irony-crammed brain cells next to The
Brady Bunch and GREASE. In the '60s Sonny wrote, produced and performed a
lot of excellent pop music, the best of which stands up next to any classic
single you care to name.

Maybe he didn't age as gracefully as he might have, but even the Shadows of
Knight seem to have their fan-shaming moments (I mean, how many rock
artists, or anything artists, were great their whole career? If so, how
long did their careers last?). Every punk/garage fanzine seems to be doing
looks back on Alice Cooper lately, a guy who jumped to the HOLLYUWOOD
SQUARES circuit as soon as he could.

I'm not saying Sonny is Iggy Pop or John Lennon (both of whom have made bad
records)...but he created his share of fine music for anyone who cares to
go back and listen to it. Somebody please tell me that I'm not the only
subscriber here that knows that.

And while I'm not going to criticize your championing of Los Dug Dugs,
since I really love the entire 30 seconds of music I've ever heard by them
(in a Mexican movie), could you please clue me in to the master list of
"cool people" that discussion on this list is "restricted to"?

I thought I did read about The Fad on here once, but now I'm wondering if I
imagined that it happened. Anyway, There was a 3-piece band from
Philadelphia called The Fad that looked and sounded as if they worshipped
The Jam and The Beatles (or perhaps most acurately, judging from their
pre-Coctails graphics, The Beatles cartoons).

However, they existed around 1983-5 I think, and released one TWELVE inch
record (self-titled on their own Gamma Records) with 6 songs on it. They
spent a year in Los Angeles and later devolved into a very generic garage
revival band called The Ravens, who released a 7" with 2 songs.

Fad guitarist/lead vocalist Frank Mamlin later moved to New York and played
drums in The Optic Nerve.

At the start, The Fad were really great, and if you ever see the 12" you
should grab it. While I thihk The Fad were more developed, the best way to
describe them is to go see a current Philly band called The Interpreters --
in some ways they are a parallel universe Fad.

If there was a Fad in the late '70s, it was another band.

I'm just not that much of a fan of Spector OR The Beatles, so shoot me
why doncha! Yeah, they may have written some nice pop songs (Needles &
Pins is about the only one that I might like... the Ramones version,
that is), but is that what this list is all about? Shit, yeah I do a
60's show (actually, we play music from the 50's right up thru 1998, so
it's not strictly a 60's show nor even a strictly 60's "influenced"
show) but it ain't a 60's POP show either! BTW, who gives a fuck if you
or anyone else on this list disagrees with ANYONE's opinion of this
stuff? Yeah, it makes for lively discourse, but why get all bent out of
shape and spend an entire post trying like hell to embarrass someone?

I love it when people make fun of me. Especially on a public list like
this. Were you by any chance ever in a fraternity? Keep it up, smartass.

Still having problems with the tape deck that records directly from the
board at KDHX. The levels are all screwed up. I'm working on setting up
my VCR to tape the station off of the local cabel access channel that
carries the audio over a community bulletin board and then dubbing
cassettes off of that, but I need to pick up a couple of things first
and make sure someone is at my house to record it while I'm doing the
show (or to dub it directly from the cable to my home stereo). Ya know
it's much easier if people (especially those w/computers!) just simply
try to tune in and hear the show over the 'net...

To quote directly from the Bomp web page that describes "What Is Bomp-L?"
(http://www.bomp.com/bomp/Mailorder.html):
"Bomp-L is our email mailing list. It's not a mouthpiece for BOMP! promo,
but a discussion group for surfadelic garagepunk music,
culture, and whatever else we feel like talking about."

What I'm getting at is that we discuss a fairly wide variety of music
here. And many of us *do* really like 60s pop. We also discuss things
that aren't even necessarily music-related (which is where the "culture"
part comes in.) And, in relation to the "whatever else...," well, I'd
think that kept from limiting us to the "surfadelic garagepunk" (which
most of us happen to love.) The point is, many of us have interests in
common... One of those happens to be 60s pop.

This list has discussed groups like The Fad and The Minstrels... neither
of whom I'd consider a garage act. Both are far more pop influenced. And
yet nobody minded. Granted, those aren't nearly as well known as Sonny
Bono or Phil Spector... but both have been described.

Also... the music mentioned in the definition was "surfadelic garagepunk."
It didn't mention anything about Merseybeat... yet most people have no
problem talking about The Kaisers. Neither do I... all I'm saying is that
that we need to remember that this group is *not* limited to discussing
"surfadelic garagepunk." The official definition goes further than that.

the Sundazed LP/CD contains their "fan club" release, which is mostly live,
plus some Epic studio demos. The quality varies, but is for the most part
pretty good.

I haven't seen this, but would like to know what it encompasses. I have
the original LP and the Sundazed LP. What am I missing?

A brief aside. Check out the Clique (the recent UK band on Detour) version
of "Why Do I Cry". They did an excellent job.

What I wanna know is why he says "I wanna sing this for Cher"... (I have
the cut on a comp CD - I don't know if the original single has this, or if
it's a live version for the comp...) It's one thing to sing "Laugh at Me"
and another to imply the audience should laugh at one's ex wife! Snarf!

That's great. My address is at the end of this. How much do you
want for it? And will you take a personal check, or should I
get a money order from the bank so you know it's good? Let me
know and I'll get you payment in the mail.

You don't OWE me anything, silly - you more than "paid back" for the rubber
toys! But I certainly wouldn't want to discourage you! Sadie O, PO Box

with me all over the Wild West) absolutely HATED all the garage/punk stuff
on your shows - she likes that overproduced MTV black wimp music shite! (I
can't believe the pablum black teenagers are recording and listening to
these days - there's a bad social message in there somewhere...) Trouble
brewing in my happy home...

Great quote! Kid and I watched Rebel Without a Cause in a motel room
somewhere in New Mexico - believe it or not, it's the first time I'd seen
it... FWIW... Anyway, THESE days, lack of concern as passive/aggressive
rebellion is the absolute norm! Giving a damn about ANYTHING qualifies as
rebellion! We've come a long way since the 60's, oh yaz....

I don't think so, though it reads like one. The full article also included
a mention of a lawsuit pending between the wife of the original owner and
the owners who took over the place in the mid-70s over who has rights to
the name. (It also mentions that she has a 'history of max's' book coming
out in the fall.)

I work just a few blocks from 52nd St... maybe I'll stroll down that way at
lunch and see what I can see. I'm wondering if it's going to be where the
old Lone Star Roadhouse was.

Yeah, there's also the CD that was a re-release on Epic that's now
out of print but I've still seen in some of the smaller shops around
Boston recently(actually, Joe, the Sony comp is probably the same disc I
have in a different package).

Barry Tashian had traveled to the U.K. on his break from Boston
University in the summer of '63. It was there that he first saw The
Beatles. Upon returning to school, he immediately formed The Remains
Some were members of a previous band he fronted (I'm doing this from
memory, so be kind with the corrections).
I don't know about Joe's comparison of The Remains to The
Standells or Shadows Of Knight, but there was a HEAVY Beatles
influence in my opinion. I consider them more pop(I mean that in a
positive sense) than those other bands. The Remains were the first(and
probably most)covered local (read:Boston)band to covered by other
Boston bands. In a lot of ways, they were ahead of their time.

Yup, at Suffolk Downs in Boston and a dozen or so other dates on the
Beatles' last tour.

They also made an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and (I think)
Shindig (or Hullabaloo).
