if you're talking about the 'session with the remains' cd on sundazed, i
think this is one of the best 60s artefacts unearthed in recent memory. sure
there's a plethora of obvious covers, but the band flat out piledrives
through the material in such a forceful manner that even tired 'classics'
like 'hang on sloopy' and 'all day and all of the night' sound fresh and
choice. and barry's voice absolutely rips. it seems the remains aren't
accorded the same respect as other six-oh garage punkers (maybe 'cause
they're not as wild or 'hip' as the sonics), but i still think this is
pretty prime - give it another chance.

i won't pretend to possess knowledge of bono/spector, but apparently a very
drunk phil spector kept the ramones hostage (at gunpoint!) at gold star in
the late 70s while the band was recording 'end of the century'. that, and he
made the band do something like 30 takes of 'rock and roll radio', whereas
up till then the ramones had been used to recording entire albums in a
single day.

Subject: No beef with Spector

The emphasis of the present arguement seems to have shifted from Bono to
Spector. I happen to like Spector, though equal credit must be given to
the performers. A good songwriter isn't always a good performer. Take
Bacharach for example, he sang a song called "House is not a home", I
couldn't get the needle of my turntable quick enough. Regarding Mr.
Schwartz's comments about an apparent generation gap on the list, age
doesn't always account for wisdom nor taste. Baby boomers have proven
this time and time and time and time again. But I don't think Mr.
Schwartz fits the mold of the typical "boomer type". We're all on this
list because we love rock "and" roll. And we're sick of dealing with
trendies, and rednecks, or whoever doesn't get it.

Hey, who was more punk than Sonny? A Sicilian Mid-westerner who said to
himself, "Hey, I too can have this" he proceeded to Take It. That's what punk
is all about to me. He laughed all the while too. He reinvented his persona
several times over, played and wrote for Specialty Records, Phil Spector and
HIMSELF. Then he went to Congress and made even THEM laugh. Just because he
didn't play guitar-driven snarly rock in no way diminishes his pop culture

I could give two shits wether people like Bono or don't like Bono (I don't
understand the Bono saber wagging - I'm not gonna question his influence on
rock but... C'mon! "I Got You Babe" is far from a rock and roll classic
IMHO), or like Spector or don't like Spector (me? I love him as a songwriter
and I have a real weak spot for the Ronnettes - this will come back to haunt

BUT...

>Hey, who was more punk than Sonny

A lot of people. Sonny was NOT punk, is not punk, and will never be punk.
Punk is thrown around like a crash test dummy that's not wearing a seatbelt
in an 80 MPH head-on collision these days. Next thing you know the Pope is
gonna be a punk rocker because he stands up for his ideals in the face of
his detractors (and Bob Dylan played for him). Though I do think I'm gonna
have to find an old photo of Sonny and doctor it up with Photoshop so he
looks like a crusty... heh heh

I don't consider myself a punk. So don't come whining to me about not
letting people into the club. I'm not fashion concious enough to be punk...

No, in fact it was programmed to avoid duplication with it,
because it is now available as a single CD.

About garage psy stuff their 1st album from Japanese Victor is best.
Another album is heavy Rock'n ' Roll or '70s sound.
All albums are reissued on CD some years ago, but some of them
are out of print now.

Golden Cups released 7 original albums.
1st and 2nd has killer fuzz punk songs.
Their 3rd is blues rock.
Their 6th "Fifth Generation:Return of the Golden Cups"
is all original sung in English except "Tears of Rage"(the Band number)
It is cool heavy and progressive '70s rock.
Another albums are all live.
All albums are reissued on CD , but some of them are hard to find.
Their 2nd will be reissued on limited vinyl in Feb.

I got "Ticket To Ride " by Barry Tashian.
It is his tour diary with Beatles last tour.
Mainly witten about Beatles for their fan, however
we can find interesting episode in it.

They thought to use Fender amp as usual , but could not
use any Fender equipment, they should use only Vox . etc...

The Remains are in the 'The Beatles at Shea Stadium' movie. I went to
see it at a midnight movie and the 'cool' Beatles fans had a ball
laughing at those goofy Remains.

I've got the Fan Club LP. I beleive this is the Sony stuff and the
Sundazed stuff in the same package. It's Great.

The Lazy Cowgirls do a rockin' cover of 'You've Got A Hard Time Comin'"

In issue #14 of "Ugly Things" there was an excellent article on the band
Crime. At the end of the article an anthology of Crime with unreleased
material is mentioned as being "in the pipeline". Does anyone know if this was
ever released?

When I first picked up their "A Session With" lp (on Sundazed) I wasn't
all that impressed. either. I gave it a listen a while later...and wow!
I now know their genius.

The Remains rule big time! Barry's book on the Beatles last tour

I second the book, it's real boss, I just wish it had more photos. Barry was
out this way performing for a concert out in Joshua Tree with a bunch of other
groups. He played some local churchs as well. The Remains are one of the
things that make life worth living!
