Bing Crosby appeared on Perry's 60s variety show; Perry: "Say Bing -

Well, *I* liked it.

Hello.
I was wondering if anyone has any Italian Beat compilations other than the one
that was recently reissued on Get Hip (60's Beat Italiano). That CD tends to
lean on the side of nasty fuzz psych garage, and I've been looking for comps
or singles that are more pop/Freakbeat (like I Giganti, any comps?). Also,
does anyone have the series of LPs on the Italian label Destination X?
Singles for sale?

Thanks a million!

I got the 180 gram vinyl and while I love MacLean's stuff, it's a little
disappointing. Just him and an acoustic. The sound is pretty decent. Taken
one or two songs at a time, it's fine but his wonderful voice isn't so
wonderful after too many songs. If you have a good imagination, it's worth
the price just to listen to what could've been.

Anything they recorded is a must. The Sony comp seems to have been
remastered with to much flair for that contemporary spacious stereo sound.
The Fan Club comp is a bit more "flat" but includes much of the session
stuff found on the Sundaze comp. The Fan Club also has a track from the
mid seventies that is a bit lame.

Daddy Cleanhead was a name used by another blues singer, namely
L.A. R&B saxophonist Chuck ("Pachuco Hop") Higgins's brother
Fred, who recorded the pleasingly novelty-ish "Something's Goin'
on in My Room" under this name for (pre-Sonny Bono) Specialty.

AFAIK. "Sock it to 'em J.B." was a minor club hit in the UK,
where it came out on Atlantic.

<commercial announcement not for major financial gain>
Speaking of the Hearts, does anyone want to trade something for
the recently released "The Baton Label" CD (Ace CDCHD 505),
featuring The Hearts' Baton sides and similarly great stuff
by Ann Cole, The Rivileers, Noble "Thin Man" Watts, etc.? I've
got most of the stuff on comps, but I had to acquire it to

Captain PJ. WCUW (Worcester) DJ. Encyclodeic mind regarding Garage Music.
Appears when, the full moon is bright, at many Mid-Atlantic to New
Englandgarage scenes, puppets in tow. This has been goin on for 15 years that
I can attest to. Former team mascot for the Bay State Bombaderes, semi pro
basketball team outta Springfield MA I think. Has been documented in local
papers and wasted at many shows. A kind heart and fanatical "mental"ity. He
has names and stories for all the puppets and is quite close to them. He can
be abrassive, unnerving, and downright obnoxious at times but means no
malice. He's the spirit that we're all wantin to let loose at times. Other
regions have theirs. I lived in Texas and traveled around the south abit and
ran into a similarlly driven character, Beatle Bob. He dances right up front
in a frenzy and wants to be as close to the volume as possible. I've even
seen Beatle Bob out on the west coast. PJ is more aggresive but means no
harm. He and his pals, Dorky Bird, Ham-Ham and his new one Mr Porno Man (I
think that's his name) just wanna rock same as the rest of us.
He can get on your nerves, but a nicer guy you'd never meet. Can be seen at
his own gigs with Kenee Highland's band at times. They've countless
arrangements to treasured classics and have no objection to making chilli
outta someones sacred cow. Try to stay clear when he's dancin', but if you
see him, you know you're in the right place.
JJ

The Sony/Legacy cd of Remains music is essentially the same takes as
the original releases of the music from the '60s Epic 45s and lp (and
the Spoonfed lp from the late 70s/early 80s), but for the most part
remixed. What bums me out about it is that I don't really think the mixes
rock out as much as the originals (especially the original mono), and as
you point out, they used a couple of longer fade-outs or false starts on
cuts. It bugs me because maybe their top classic, "Why do I Cry" is not
faded out like the original release, which is a concise pop classic--
another 20 or so seconds of repetitive riffing is left in, which
then stops cold--kind of reducing the magic of the original experience to
my ears (and for any "oldies radio" dj who might dare to play it, their
biggest (?) "hit.") The cd was produced by Bob Irwin of Sundazed,
whose judgement I sometimes (often?) question...

Frank

P.S. Thankfully the Sony cd has the mono 45 mix of "I Can't Get Away
From You," which is one of their very coolest. A sample lyric:

"A bell rings in my mind
There's something I can't find
You smoke my cigarette
make the end all wet
wear slitted skirts
and my man-tailored shirts/

I can't get away from you"

With a midtempo, almost doomy feel and lightly fuzzed guitar twangin'
throughout, building to great crashing crescendos at the choruses and
the scream/guitar break.

I just checked the title of the lp I have from the Shea Stadium concert.
"Beatles Blast in Stadium Described by Erupting Fans" is the actual name
of it. It does feature a brief snippet of the Remains live, way in the
background behind an interview with a Beatle fan. It reminds me of the
tape a friend of mine made of the MC5 live in 1968 in his front yard.
They weren't playing there, though, they were about a mile away at Ann
Arbor's West Park bandshell. You can actually hear the super-echoey
and distant voice of Rob Tyner singing "Ramblin' Rose," when it is not
being drowned out by the sounds of a lawn sprinkler and a passing car.
(Should we put out a bootleg of it???)

Frank (again)

Hi Rob,
I do have in stock the newest volume, #10, but I might be able to get other
volumes as well. But I´m based in germany, so that would make postage pretty
high. Just let me know if you´re interested & I try to get more volumes (but they
