Subject: Black Vinyl Shoes

I recently acquired (quite cheaply, I might add) a copy of the Shoes'
'Black Vinyl Shoes' LP on Black Vinyl Records (1977), with all the
inserts (iron on, sticker, photo/songlist sheet), and was quite pleased
that the mastering seemed to be much louder, with a much stronger bottom
end, than the PVC label issue (1978) that I've had for years. The
reason I post this, however, is that the liners to the 'Best Of Bomp' LP
(1978) state that the Shoes self-released *three* LPs before their Bomp
single, "Tomorrow Night" (1978). Now, I've always loved the unique (and
actually quite psychedelic) sound quality on 'Black Vinyl Shoes', which
never resurfaced on the later "better produced" Shoes LPs that I've
heard. I had always assumed that 'Black Vinyl Shoes' was their first
release (recorded in '76 and '77). Can anyone fill me in on the details
of the other two self-released LPs -- recording dates, track listing,
etc? Were these reissued at any time, and do they sound anything like
'Black Vinyl Shoes'? If this isn't the right list for this query, I
don't know what is. Thanks in advance. KI

Well... they *used* to sound a good bit like The Ramones. However, their
upcoming disc on Lookout (due Jan. 26th, I think, but promos are around) is
very Runaways-influenced. Personally, I really like it... my only
complaint is that there's not a bit more variety. However, if I'm in the
mood for it, I can crank it up, blast it out, and be quite happy.

I'd like to echo JJ's comments on Captain PJ... yeah, he appears to be
completely nuts, but he's just having a good time. And the couple times
we've talked over the years (he's up in Massachusetts, I'm in NJ, just
outside NYC, so it's not too often), he's been a very nice guy... just a
bit out there. But he's one of those characters that make rock'n'roll so
much fun.

PJ used to be involved with Fuzbrains fanzine. (In fact, I think he did a
special edition for Cave Stomp last Fall.) Also involved with that was
Reverend Joe Longone, who published a book in '91 or so entitled _The Great
Rock'n'Roll Survey (1980s)_ which basically surveyed a bunch of people into
cool music for their picks on great music for that decade. It was very
Massachusetts-centric ('cuz those are the people whose arms Joe could twist
into finishing the survey), then compiled the "Best of" lists and had
writeups on them (mainly by Joe). However, it also included an essay by
WFMU DJ Bill Kelly, plus another by Captain PJ.

Here is a thought that I've harboured for a long time after reading time and
time again about the Remains nearly moving to Captitol. Is it not simply
possible that Capitol invited The Remains to record a short "live" set just
to see if they could cut the mustard for the Beatles tour? Does anyone know
if the demo was recorded before or after the tour? Also, why would the
Remains want to switch from Epic (hey, they had the Yardbirds) to Capitol?
Oh well it's just a another stupid rock'n'roll theory.

"Au Revoir" folks it's been good hanging out on the list for the last three

Subject: The Hearts vs. Lee Andrew & The Hearts (was:Rex Garvin)

I'm so happy that there has been such a response to my question regarding Rex
Garvin and The Hearts. I used to have a friend who could have answered these
questions but....

Now in response to Brian Phillips statement: Thanks for the info about Lee
Andrews and the Hearts. I read an interview with him eons ago, about how he
did his best to recruit the best in the group. Sounds like he succeeded! >>

It should be pointed out that Lee Andrews and The Hearts and The Hearts that
included Rex Garvin were two different groups all together. And it gets even
more confusing because of some similar song titles!

Now as long as we Brian has brought up the topic of Lee Andrew & The Hearts
in leads to a new question, does anybody know anything about a label called
Lana Records? I picked up two Lee Andrews & The Hears singles on Lana but
when I looked them up in the Goldmine Price Guide there were no listing for
Lana, are these bootlegs? Basically here are the details (as I'm sure you
really care);

1) Teardrops b/w The Girl Around The Corner (Lana Records 112)
the price guide lists the releases of this single having been: Argo
Records #1000 (1957), Chess Records #1675 (1957), Grand Records #156 (1962)
and Main Line Records #105 (1962)

2) Long & Lonely Nights b/w The Clock (Lana Records 110)
the price guide lists the releases of this single having been: Chess
Records #1665 (1957), Grand Records #157 (1962), Main Line Records #102 (1962)

So does anybody know about Lana Records.

<<I'm an Easybeat novice, where should a naive young man like myself start

The Easybeats are one of my all time favorite bands, even though their studio
albums are inconsistent. With some of that inconsistency came some great vocal
and instrumental arrangement ideas. All of their albums (CDs) have been
reissued on Repertoire records from Germany. My favorite Easybeats album is
Volume 3, with the great single "Sorry" and 23 other tracks, including the
original album and early demos that are outstanding. "Friday On My Mind" is a
good album too, but all of the albums best tracks are on the 2-CD collection
called "Aussie Beat That Shook The World." The 2-CD set and Volume 3 pretty
much cover the best of what the band did, and make you feel that the money you
spent on the imports was well worth it.
Cheers!

Well, that's where the Runaways comparison comes in, then! I haven't
heard the new Donnas lp yet, but if it sounds anything like the Runaways
(or Kiss for that matter), I bet I'll love it. The Runaways (formed in
LA?) featured Joan Jett and Lita Ford, and that combo should give you an
inkling into their sound, too. Not so much garage as glam/metal
rock'n'roll, they still rocked. Have ya ever heard Cherry Bomb? The band
was split on which scene they wanted to be a part of, though (punk or
metal), and that's what ultimately led to the band breaking up and
launching the solo careers of Jett and Ford.

Boyd, what's new with your band? Ya know if you guys want to set
something up in St. Louis sometime you should drop me an email... I've
been helping Darren set up some shows at The Side Door lately.

Last night was The Original Sins final hometown show. The Funhouse was
packed and people had a great time. The material came mainly from the
first 5 discs (since Dave Ferrara was on drums), although they did do one
or two from the new one, _Suburban Primitive_. Lotsa cool covers, too...
"Let's Have A Party," "Head Held High," "Help Me Rhonda," "Making Time,"
and... to end it all, my request for "Psycho," even though the bartendress
was saying it was past closing time... but they *had* to end this way.
I'll write more about this in the next Teen Scene.

I can't believe the Original Sins are (after tonight's show in Philly)
going to be no more. Well... as I said to organist Dan McKinney, Kenny's
already told me that he'll come back up if JT wants to record a new Sins
record... he'll do it once a year, actually, if the rest want to. No
reason they shouldn't do a show or two, as well, once a year. I'll just
keep reminding Kenny.

real dividing line is between mid-sixties garage/beat/etc and late sixties
psychedelic material. I think 60's Beat Italiano is the strongest of them.

Hey!

I checked my Trouser Press Record Guide and it only lists one LP before
'Black Vinyl Shoes'. It's called 'Un Dans Versailles' and was issued
in a minute amount in 1975. I have heard that there was another LP
recorded about the same time but never released.

I have tried to listen to the Shoes for years and have heard almost all
of the LP's. I just can't get into them at all.

Any other Sex Clark 5 fans out there? Hi Joy!

The new single on lookout (with a full length due jan 26 on lookout) by
the Donnas does indeed have them doing a cover of Kiss' "speading back to

totally awesome.

The Donnas came to Tokyo on March last year for their spring
break and they played four shows here. At the time they were
seniors in Palo Alto High School in Bay Area and I heard they
were going to split because they were going to college. I knew
they played Tokyo and Wisconsin besides in California, but are
they still doing lots of tours in the States? (I don't know how
it's possilbe if they are supposedly at different colleges.)

Hey...
Intriqued by the above mentioned 60's Beat Italiano. Is this the same one as
referred to as being from Get Hip? Unfamiliar with this title and would like to
change that. Any leads, insights etc on mid 60's, Euro, Beat comps would be
greatly appreciated. Thanx!

Subject: Same Old Song

Hey,

We've got a video of the German "Beat Beat Beat" series from the '60's
that's got 4 songs by The Creation. They do this great song called
"Same Old Song" which we can't find on the albums we have. There are
two different lead singers -- one lead singer (lighter hair, square
glasses) is on one of the videos and the other lead singer (darker hair,
bushy eyebrows) sings this song. We aren't familiar with the name of
the lead singers, but we know that the lead guitarist is Eddie Phillips
and that Ron Wood was once in the band. Our question is, where can we
find this song? Is it an original or a cover?
Thanks, Jen
