	One would be Kenny Pickett, who died about a year ago. The other was Bob
Garner. The band went through a number of lineup changes, actually. The
best history I know of them would be the HUGE set of articles/interviews
Mike Stax did on/about/with the band in the most recent issue of Ugly
Things.  Truly tremendous.
	Also, the band did some shows and recording in the mid-90s. I know there
was a full-length disc, but I only have the 3-song CD single... which is
fantastic. Just like you'd want it to sound.

	Some others will be interested to note that Pickett and Phillips did some
songwriting together long after The Creation were no more... the best known
track is probably "Teacher Teacher" which Rockpile did quite well with.

>Our question is, where can we
>find this song? Is it an original or a cover?
	I've never heard of one called "Same Old Song." However, part of the
chorus to "Making Time" says "Why do we have to carry on, always singing
the same old song? / Same old song... Yeah, the same old song." Or
something like that. (It's 3:30 AM and I don't feel like waking the
neighbors.)

Subject: New garage project

A Communique from the Divine Rites Affairs Desk.
Dateline: Sydney, Australia. January 11:

Bompers (in Australia especially) might want to know about a show being
organised by a new French record label in Sydney on Saturday, January 31.

Please excuse this short plug but this is a non-profit project and it's all
about keeping the spirit of Detroit/garage music alive in Australia and
beyond.

France-based Australian music fanatic Didier Georgieff - who runs a web
page devoted to the New Christs and all things related - is producing two
10 inch EPs called "Storming the Citadel" on his own Divine Rites label.

The discs will be covers of songs mostly issued on the Citadel label in
Australia by various (mostly Australian) bands.

The roster, what songs they'll do and (who originally recorded them) is as
follows:

Asteroid B-612 - Mirror Blues (Died Pretty);
Sheek The Shayk and The Royal Camels (ex Psychotic Turnbuckles) - Liquor
Fit (Lipstick Killers);
Challenger 7 - Move A Little Closer (Screaming Tribesmen);
Decapod (ex Porcelain Bus) - Sister's Life (Porcelain Bus);
Panadolls - Voodoo Slaves (Minuteman);
Hunchbacks - Virginia (Bamboos);
Louis Tillett & Charlie Owen - Headin' South (New Christs);
Mother Jones  - (will do a New Christs song);
Pyramidiacs - Don't Talk About Us (Someloves);
Jack & the Beanstalk - Slave Girl (Lime Spiders);
Backsliders (France - ex Fixed Up) - Savage (Fun Things);
Tension (USA) - A Legacy Of Morons (Trilobites);
Sinners (Sweden) - Date With A Vampyre (Screaming Tribesmen).

New Christs singer Rob Younger (also of Radio Birdman) is handling
production duties and the Sydney bands will be in the studio later this
month.

Didier is jetting in from France to oversee the project.

The records - on shimmering, black, warm vinyl, not CD - should be
available by mail order in March or April via Didier's web page.

E-mail him at dgieff@sdv.fr to have details forwarded when it's available.

To mark the birth of this new label, Divine Rites is organising a gig/party
on 31 January at the Riverview Hotel in Tempe, Sydney, (from 8 till 11.30)
with Challenger 7, Sheek The Shayk and the Royal Camels, Mother Jones and
Decapod. Admission is free.

Maybe the line-up of bands recording or being covered might spark a bit of
talk on the Bomp list.

For those of you who don't know, Citadel was THE label in Sydney in the
1980s and is still home to great bands like the New Christs, The Stems,
Died Pretty and Radio Birdman.

You'll find the Divine Rites page and mailing list at
http://www.sdv.fr/pages/dgieff/rob.htm

We now return you to your normal programming.

I'd be prone to lean towards Blair's theory here. I'm not aware of the
Creation ever performing a song called "Same Old Song", particularly if
we're talking about the old Four Tops tune. Now, "Cool Jerk" on the other
hand.... Though, I admit to needing to go back and listen to "Making Time"
again to get the exact lyrics. Somehow, the lyrics of this song never
seemed like they needed to be listened to too closely.

Hey!

Yes, there is still a band called the Sex Clark 5. The last I heard
they were looking for a label to release the fourth LP. I don't know
if they had any takers.

They are now a trio. Joy Johnson (who subscribes to Bomp-say hi!) left
the band to get a degree in something or another. The last thing she
did with them was record the second Peel session. They won't be the
same without her.

There was talk of a live LP but I don't know if that is going to appear
anytime soon. I also heard that they played a few songs at a cookout
last summer.

Rick Storey has a side project called The Martinlutherkinks. They put
out an EP a few years ago. It's good.

Jimmy Carl Indians! Ha ha! I love it! Howcome YOU ain't writing for TV?
Then it'd stand a decent chance of being FUNNY instead of EMBARRASSING!

My kids are mixed race, and their dad left before the younger one was even
born - and let me tell you , one of the weirdest parts of this mothering
job is trying to get them to see how insulting that stuff is to their
racial heritage, when I don't even share that heritage. No wonder I'm
starting to go a bit schizo in my old age... Well, that and all the drugs I
took and Kim Fowley records I listened to in my youth, heh...

>On the musical front, there is good stuff to be had, I suppose, but much of

Good music takes some digging for these days, no matter what the genre, it
seems. There ain't any good shit hitting the C&W charts any more than it
is the black or techno or whatever it is white college kids are listening
to these days - I never in my LIFE expected to be be this outside the loop
on popular music, nor did I ever expect that I would care so little! What
the hell happened to rap/hiphop? It used to be FUN! Now it's just
laughable! As for jazz, there's TONS of good swing going on (which suits
me just fine - I always liked Ellington better than Coltrane), but you have
to get pretty deep to find good avant-garde stuff. It ain't on the
airwaves, fer sher.

A few years back, I was all set for international (NOT WORLD BEAT) music to
change the face of American popular music. I even was a finalist for a
Music Critics Award of 95 for an article I did on Bhangra, and the
influence of African music was obvious (it seemed)... 3 Mustafas 3 and
Boiled in Lead had solid followings, and all seemed right with the world.
Now, on any given week, I can see at least 2 dozen salsa/Brazilian shows
here in town, there are two Irish bars that always have Irish trad bands,
and THAT'S IT. Damn our insularity, anyway. And damn the lowest common
denominator all to hell!

Oh heck, this wasn't going to turn into a rant, was it? Sorry about that!

It's horrifying! (Not only in the implications, but the fact that the

As long as I'm ranting about social messages, what does it means that the
strongest black characters on TV are on cop shows?

You know, I could REALLY make a conspiracy theory out of this... "Well,
Bubba, we failed to keep em in their place back in the 60's, now we're
gonna have to go subtle on their hineys..."

This 'concert' was presented for the first time last fall in Memphis (see
the review in a recent issue of _Mojo_ magazine) and was apparently such a
big hit that they're taking it on the road -- a Cleveland date was just
announced also.

Maybe Elvis can play Europe now that the sticky little issue of
getting a passport for Col. Tom doesn't have to be dealt with :-)

If this 'tour' turns out to be a moneymaker, look out -- we all can name
several bands who haven't hesitated to milk everything they can out of the
legacy of deceased members, and this will just be the next trip to the
bank.

Indeed. They also set fire to "artwork" they created on stage long before
the Jam spray painted silly symbols and graffiti on stage. Shel Talmy did
two singles with them, hoping to turn them into the next Who (at least
Talmy was able to get the Untamed to record "It's Not True", but that's

That song is called "Making Time" and was their first single. You can
find it on the comp. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO FEEL which is a great record (I
think it's on the Edsel label). Also the personnel is probably Bob Garner
on vocals, Eddie Phillips on lead guitar, Kim Gardner on bass, and Jack
Jones on drums as that was the version of the Creation that was most
popular in Germany. Do you know what year the footage is from? Where did
you get it? I'd love to get me filthy paws on some live Creation footage.

The other early Shoes album is called BAZOOKA. I've given up hope of ever
finding any of the early, self-pressed Shoes LPs, as they were all
extremely limited runs. However, I know there are bootleg tapes floating

I haven't take the effort to do this myself, but I'd be surprised if a good

fans (and power pop people in general) seem to be very WWW-oriented. I know
there is an online zine called Audities.

for a song that's just about fucking around. "Looking for an open door /
Never taking chances / Take your pick / Makes you sick / Seeking new
advances..."  That's kinda catchy.

Calling Alex of Coffee'n'Smokes fame:

	You mentioned playing the Move on the 27th of last month and as I
have met precious few other Move fans in my short life I was wondering if
you knew the lyrics to "Walk Upon The Water." Specifically the part where
the guitarist who isn't Roy Wood is sneering through all that phasing (it
ends with "now their souls are washed up / They've destroyed their
minds...").

Definitely a classic, and a song bands today love to cover. The Makers,
DM3, and the Lord High Fixers all do versions of this song... my fave
version being the Fixers on their Once Upon A Time Called Right Now 10".

Thanks, Bob. I'll give you a B+ on your book report. You definitely
offered some fine information on the book, but I had to take off for
grammar (no capitalization) and incompleted ideas "(not the most inventive,
but . . . )"

Still, you've given enough information to interest me in reading the book,
and you even suggested a retail price. Well done.

Now I wonder if I can get him to sign it if I drive to Nashville (about 3
hrs. from Atlanta).

No, unfortunately, it hasn't been released. When the article was being
written, an Ugly's friend was going to release it on American Records, where
he managed. All systems were go until he switched jobs later that year to
another label and the Crime project fell through the railings. At current
time, other (larger) labels have taken interest, so the possiblilty of it
coming out in the future is good, but nothing has been set in stone yet.

Appears to be! There's 4 songs and it's used in all I think.
Other hot stuff on this volume inckude a 3 or 4 song set by the Equals.
All this is very live, and -Mint quality.

In the top right hand corner of the screen in a small box, it reads 1966.
There are 3 Volumes that I'm aware of. Best of Beat! Beat! Beat! and Best
of....More Vol.2 and Best of....more Vol. 3, at a record convention.
 Quality is grade A. Each Vol is about 80-90 minutes. Most acts are LIVE, very
live. All from '66. As with many things like this, there's a few lame acts on
the bill, but there's plenty of good ones too, Here's a few...Equals (3-4
dsongs), Yardbirds (4 songs), Kinks (4), Dave Davies (1, yes, Death of..), 4
by the Small Faces that are devastating, unbelievable, Troggs (2), Easybeats
(1), Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band (1) and many many more. All of the
above, with the exception of Dave Davies (lyp synched) ALL is LIVE! The Vendor
was Lost & Found.
All the Best,
JJ

Is that the same Ram Jam that butchered the Ledbelly song "Black Betty"?
