Lana was an "oldies" label operated by an east coast record distributor in
the early 60s, I believe. They were almost certainly pirate pressings. But
in those days, virtually every distributor and pressing plant sold pirate
pressings of any hit they could get their hands on.

There were two: I have them. Un Dans Versailles was pressed in very limited
quantities but I don't know if they ever reissued it (and if not, why not).
I can't remember the title of the earlier LP, I have an acetate of it, I
don't believe it was ever distributed. Some powerpop fanatic must know!

Hey all,

Is somebody here aware of what's goin on with the Digging For Gold serie ?
I was told that volume 7 was about to be released, but this info is now
nearly 5 months old...Since we are often the last ones to be served and
informed here in Europe about what's goin on, even with European comps (I
remember that the "Ils sont fous ces gaulois" vol.2 has appeared here
nearly 3 months after having been proposed in the US catalogues), please
let me know if you've got some info about this...
thanx !

one of the best series anyway, most of the volumes are 100% cool & have a good

Not bad, It's Roy Wood's foray into roots rock. It came out around
the same time he formed ELO with Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan. I used to
own my own copy too many years ago to count, so this was the station's
copy that I played. If you find it cheap at a yard sale or flea market, pick

Keep in mind that Midnight Records will advertise new releases months
in advance, in order to beat their competition. When I see them list
something new I want, I plan on looking for it about two months later,
preferably elsewhere. This is one of the reasons I try not to deal with
Midnight.
Being in the US, I buy a lot of European releases direct from Europe,
as they often won't show up in this country for a while, if at all. No one
carried the first couple volumes of Prae-Kraut Pandaemonium or 60's Italian
Beat Resurrection over here until long after they were released, and Raveyard
Paradise was completely sold out before it could make it across the Atlantic.

I've got that. It's pretty weird - but what do you expect? REALLY
bombastic rockabilly.

I like Wizzard's glam hits much better, but they're incredibly hard to find...

Is this the same "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" that is done by the Blues Magoos?
(After digging out the CD and looking at the credits, it's written by "Wood,"
that's good enough for me.) Kinda like "I Guess I Was Dreaming" that was done
by the Fairytale and the Kingsmen. I don't have a songwriting credit for
this, so who knows which band wrote "Dreaming"? What's the deal with these
transatlantic covers? I'd love to know.

Also, has anyone any thoughts on the "Love Story" 2 CD?
I just picked it up and my initial reaction is that the post-Forever Changes
material isn't as bad as I have read it would be.

Is the Japanese soft rock revival related to what I heard called "Neo Aco"

yes, must admit that it's true too...but an example is the "Peace, Love &
Poetry" comps which was first available in France about 4 months ago
exclusively via "authorized persons" only, nearly seemed that it was a more
than private release...the first pressings were more than hard to find,I
remember that my record dealer could only find 1 of each volumes, and didn't
want to sale them at that time, being not sure to find them anymore , and
keeping them for his own collection, and for the shop, to make us
drooling...well...the fact is that even if they 're now a little bit easyer
to find here (gonna purchase mine this week end, gonna be able to answer to
your questions about them if you got some...but maybe have you all already
bought your copy since months ago ! I wouldn't be surprised by that ! ),
i've not seen them in the large majority of european catalogues....but
Midnight is aware of that stuff, and propose them since 1 month
now...wonder how many copies do they hold! not much I suppose...anyway!
without my local records dealer who apparently was holding good relations
with the guys who put out the comp themselves (German pressing if I
remember), I would have passed completly aside of this stuff (and the few
I've heard worth the spin...without talking about the absolutly superb
artwork)...thanx to Midnight, I'm aware about what's goin on in
Germany..even if I'm only about 150 kms of this country....these guys stay
a reference for me, to know what's going on ....
Btw, Menachem, which european catalogues do you usually use ? I missed
completly the first volumes of PKP at that time, wonder on which list
you've found them....Wolfgang Volkel ? Acme ? Dig! ?

ps: Btw, for those who have missed "Diggin for Gold" vol. 1, there's still
a copy lost here in Switzerland, in a second hand record shop in
Geneva...its price is not as high as you can see now on the auction lists
(I've seen it around $80), since it must be around $20-25. This copy has
apparently never been played. Email me if interested.
Talkin about that, I'm DESPERATLY lookin for vol. 2, missed it at the time
it was issued, never managed to put the hand on that Graal....if you know
where I could be able to find it, please email !

Great American Music Hall is an honest-to-gosh Victorian Music Hall, from
before the Big Quake, and is on the National Register of Historic Places...
LOTS of fancy stuff, but they usually only fill the floor with tables for
groups like Riders in the Sky... Southern Culture on the Skids always play
there, and there's plenty of room for limboing. It's still REAL hard to
imagine ? and crew there, though. Should be an experience!

Davie Allan is still very much active (I saw him a month or two ago at a
cool dive in the SF Bay Area), and King of Fuzz is new material (well, I
think that CD is a couple years old - but it ain't 60's!)... The music is
basically biker movie soundtrack type music! Yeah, lots of fuzz, obviously
(he has a gizmo with a mess of buttons for different sorts of fuzz - took
him an hour to set it up last time I saw him, for which he apologized
sheepishly, saying "I can't play without my thingy.") He's a very sweet
guy, rather shy and quiet, and very handsome, heh! He does some pretty
killer Ventures covers, but other than that, if you know what "Blues Theme"
sounds like, you know his music...

it's the best place to see bands that are bigger than the club venues.
pretty small, there are seats but no one sits down, and there is a standing
room only area up at the front, where anyone with floor tickets can go to.

The Davie Allan LP - King of Fuzz is actually a boot from Australia
that came out a few years ago. Same makers as the Born Bad series.
It's intended to be a best of.

Davie Allan played on a load of soundtracks, most of which were
uncredited. There's a real cool magazine called FUZ that did a
great job putting together a discography. There's also a discography
in one of the Psychotronic issues, but I'm not sure which one.

Just to mention a few Soundtracks, Davie Allan played on....
Born Losers
Teenage Rebellion
Hellcats
Thunder Alley
Freakout USA
Skaterdater

list goes on..

There was a best of CD recently put out of France (I think)
called Bullseye. They used the cover of the LP from Apache 66.

Speaking of Midnight records.....

Would anyone like to share any horror stories about JD owner of
Midnight?

I've had some friends who worked there and can't stand the guy.
Just wanted to hear from some Bompers about their experiences.

thanks

It was issue #2 of Psychotronic that had the excellent Davie Allan interview.
In this article he mentions playing on the same bills as The Seeds, The
Leaves, The Music Machine etc. Unbeleivable!!!! Coincidentally, yesterday a
friend of mine brought over Davie's most recent c.d. entitled "Fuzzfest"
(sorry I dont remember what label it was on) and I thought it was great. None
of those goofy Link Wray comeback type metal guitar acrobatics. Just biker
action fuzz! Aside from the production it is quite possibly his most even
effort to date.

Vic Maile produced the album 'Legendary Lovers' by french band the Dogs,
recorded july 1983. Definitely worthwhile to look out for this one, I can
remember it was my album of the year back then. This was the first I heard
from the Dogs, though it was already their fourth album. From the first
tones of 'Little Johnny Jet' onwards it's filled with fresh uptempo rock/pop
songs. The one slower tune 'Be My Lover' is a true masterpiece. Be sure Vic
Maile did a great production job. The album was re-released on CD in 1992
(Epic EPC 469480 2) with two bonus tracks.
As far as I know the band still carries on. Last I got from them is the CD
'Three Is A Crowd' from 1993. Anyone got any info what they did since then?
I'm also still looking for their early 80's 12" 'Go Where You Wanna Go', can
anyone help me with that one?

Best,
Jos

I just remember a bunch of bands in the mid-80s telling me that JD had
cheated them in some way. (One of them Victor may remember, since they
were from Rochester.)

>I've had some friends who worked there and can't stand the guy.
We obviously have some of the same friends.

Having said all this, I've never had any real problem with JD. On the
other hand, I know enough not to order from him. However, when I worked at
Penn Plaza in NYC (above Penn Station), the Platterpuss and I used to head
down there at lunchtime once or twice a week with a couple friends. I'd
occasionally get a couple things, but only if it was something I couldn't
find elsewhere. (And, at the time, Pier Platters was still in Hoboken...
and their prices were usually better, so...) But JD was never actually
nasty to me. (Although he said some unkind things to a friend a few
times.)

	Blair

(Final Vinyl used to have a great shot of JD from the Daily News. It seems
his building had a fire one night and the firemen had to carry JD out of
the building, passed out. And we all found out that ol' JD sleeps in the
buff.)

Think of Jeff Lynne's Jeckyl to Roy Wood's Hyde. I have a Wizzard album
called "Wizzards Brew". There's a picture of Wood with his stringy long
hair and pre-Kiss make-up on the cover. A real madman

Just Wolfgang Volkel. That's who I got my copies of the "Peace, Love
& Poetry" comps from. I think he's only had them in his catalog since
December, and mine arrived in the last two weeks - right on time for my
turntable to break down! I'm looking forward to the Latin American volume, as
I haven't been willing to take a chance on most of the recent reissues from
down there.
