I love and worship The Move, and a lot of Roy Wood's other music. This
album is one of my least favorite of his efforts (though some later albums
are worse). However, it's some people's favorite Roy Wood record (Ben
Vaughn, anyway).

It's a live in the studio recording, made on the 3RRR studios in
Melbourne in front of 30 people.
It's an official one on their own Crying Sun label, and it's
released thru Citadel.
There is a special A5 digipack limited edition
available via mail order, and now a regular jewel case available in
shops.

You can get the whiole story about this record on the Divine Rites
pages in the Radio Birdman section.
You also can hear a special interview made on 3RRR radio with all
the Birdmen. It's in real audio files.

The new Deniz Tek album will release in the next months on Citadel
too.
Rob Younger will be in the studio at the end of January for producing
8 Sydney bands for the "Storming the Citadel" project on my own
label.

Hope it helps. Yeah Hup !

Subject: Midnight Stories From Hell

I called once to order my Pebbles compilations. I spent over $100 on an
order and the French guy was all pissed off because I didn't know the
prices. I asked if he had certain records, he said yes, I said how much,
he got mad because I had no catalog in front of me.

It's people like him that give the French a bad name. If Norton carried
the records that I wanted, I would have gladly given Miriam the money,
no questions asked. They like their customers and do anything to keep
them.

The real kick in the gonads is that Midnight has perhaps the best
collection of 60's garage and psychedelic stuff around. Often the prices
are really good too. However, if I see it available someplace else, I
won't buy it from Midnight.

I know it ain't me. Arthur Lee was very nice to me when he autographed
his single for me four years ago. I never would have believed he was
acid casualty. He was funny and coherent, unlike the French guy at
Midnight :)

Subject: Re: Midnight Stories From Hell

Just getting back to Bomp after some time away, and I'm interested to see this
discussion item. I've been a fairly loyal Midnight customer for years. Why?
Because he carries things I couldn't possibly get here in Kansas City (or maybe
even in Lawrence). On the other hand, the little things get to me:

Fill rates can be terrible. I can order up to a dozen things and receive only
four or five. Back ordering usually gets this above half, but most other mail
retailers I use fill nearly 100% of the orders.

Some of the stuff they don't supply is weird: Untamed Melodies (finally got this
locally). Hey Evan, I ordered the Upper Crust from Midnight and they couldn't
supply it on backorder even. Couldn't get the Fortune and Maltese LP either.

Inconsistent pricing. Just got a new New Christs disc. They billed me $21.99.
It was listed in the most recent Goldmine at $19.99. I think that's why they
want you to quote them a price--because they've got various prices spread all
around their advertising.

Staff. I've never dealt with JD directly, but some of the staff are definitely
not made for retail.

I'll probably stick with Midnight periodically--for a variety of reasons. I've
found a few other mail retailers and I'd be happy to share them with other folks
if you contact me off list. Likewise, I'm always looking for leads on decent
mail retailers--so keep those suggestions coming.

I know that the two major online CD retailers, CDNow and Music Boulevard,
are selling the new Crust CD (and the old one, for that matter).
Personally, when I mail-order I usually try to support the smaller
companies that are more 'garage-friendly,' such as Norton or Vinyl
Injections/Stanton Park, but I'm not sure if either of them are stocking
the Crust. (Though I'd think VI would since he's based in Boston and has a
lot of Boston-based bands.)

<Could someone tell me the story behind Radio Birdman's album
RITUALISM, which I just picked up a few days ago? I would never have
picked it up under normal circumstances, but I was staying late at work
that night to do some crunch work on a major project for my company and
I was very desperate for a quick fix of garage punk to get me through,
and that particular record was the only Birdman title in stock at the
store.

Anyway, not having heard anything other than the RADIOS APPEAR album
before then, I was thrilled to hear a few particular Birdman songs for
the first time, like "Smith and Wesson Blues", "Revelation", and "Aloha
Steve & Danno". However, the whole recording overall struck me as
pretty shoddy, especially when I heard the songs that I already knew
from RADIOS APPEAR. The mix is kind of weak and cheesy and the band
themselves don't sound incredibly tight in some spots.

What's the deal with this record? When was it recorded, and under what
circumstances? Is it a bootleg of studio outtakes, a live recording
session, radio broadcast performances, what? And if I liked the songs
I've mentioned here, what should I be running out to get?

- - - John Lee

THis is a live album recorded at a radio station in Australia on
Birdman's last year reunion tour. If you have "Radios Appear" you
should be familiar with "Aloha Steve and Danno" and "Smith and Wesson
Blues" as they're both on it. Unless, of course, you have the original
Aussie version of the album which didn't have those songs on it. They
were added to the U.S. version later. The Red Eye CD reissue combines
both versions onto one handy package. You may also want to check out
"Living Eyes" and "The EPs - Burn Me Eye and More Fun" which are also
available on CD. "Ritualism" is a new song the group wrote for the
reunion tour.

Subject: Laundry Mat Rock questions

This radio show I listen to every Tues. night had this special show about
laundry mat rock. The amazing thing is that all the songs were
connected. Almost all of the songs had the line "my love is stronger than
dirt" and something about a white knight on a horse. And Ajax and the
Cleaners' (right name?) "Stronger than Dirt" (covered by the Mummies)
had the line "who is that man on the horse" a apparent reference to The
Detergents teen tragedy classic "Leader of the Laundry mat" (who is that
playing that piano...) maybe it's the other way around. Anywho, I'm just
curious as to what brand used the logo of the knight on the horse and
"stronger that dirt". Does anybody have info on any of these bands. Oh
yeah, he also played some stuff by The Scramblers who had an LP called
Cycle Psychos on Crown Records. Thanks for any info.

Stronger than Dirt!
New Ajax Laundry Detergent is stronger than dirt!

That is how the old ad would go as a knight on a white horse would gallop
through the countryside. I cannot recall whether the Ajax box has the
knight on it.

This ad was so well-known, the Doors interpolated it into the end of their
song "Touch Me". Listening to the last four notes, you can faintly hear
voices singing "Stronger than dirt"

So I know more about kitsch than music sometimes. Oh, well.

ROCK AND ROLL BABY!!! The lounge flavored lozenges won't slow you down
either! The "slow tune of the bunch" award goes to Jack O' Fire (but it
screams out BLUES! not lounge).

You can't go wrong with this record! Try to find the triple 7" box set if
you can, the CD just loses something without the neat-o, lounge before
lounge was hip packaging, drink coaster AND stirrer (the "I want me a man
who uses Estrus Crust" or whatever ad for the Crust Club is cool too)!

I have spoken.

Just wondering, since we got some japanese people here on the list if you
could tell me about good garage bands from Japan. I just love Teengenerate,
Guitar Wolf, Registrators, Supersnazz, 5678s...
any other band that rock as much as them that I don't know about?
thanks...

BTW, if anybody is from the Montreal area on the list, we're having a major
release party for the BLow The Fuse compilation we put out, with 5 bands
playing from the album, and we managed to get Joey Ramone as guest DJ, only
8$ saturday 24th of January at the Backstreet...It should rock like hell.
(If we don't get another of those damned Ice storms and there's no power
that night, that would really piss me off!!!)

I can heartily recommend a Davie Allan 45 on In the Red Records (Anaheim),
"Chopper" b/w "Open the Throttle." (Year??) Very wild stuff, in its way
undefinable; it'd give Guitar Wolf a run for their money. I also have a Curb
CD called Davie Allan and the Arrows which is pretty good, if you stop after
the fourth or fifth track, before you head into "Theme from Star Trek Next
Generation and "Batman," etc. Otherwise, recommended.

Did anyone catch David Fricke raving about The Neckbreakers in the latest
Rolling Stone?! Small notice, but nice. It'd be cool if they started selling
some more records. Also, as Evan pointed out, a B+ for the new Fleshtones
release in Entertainment Weekly. Wow.

Which issue is this? God forbid I spend my $3 on that thing and not get
the Neckbreakers write-up!

Yes, the Leaves version is so much better and the Byrds take on it leaves me
cold. The first Love album has like three "Hey Joe"s on it - Hey, wouldn't
that be cool -- a whole album of "Joe"-derived tunes! What did they leave off
of Love Story? I know I have a tape of that first LP somewhere...I remember
it being a little weak but that could just be the mix or maybe that I heard
Forever Changes first and always will judge against that -- hard act to
follow!
The mono mix of Love Story is much better then the stereo album mix. Bass and
drums in the center makes it really rock, although some of Da Capo suffers in
mono because it's a little too dense. (If you don't believe what I'm saying
about mono, get an amp with a mono switch, put on Beatles For Sale, and flick
the switch...not as "limp" as ya thought!)

Hi Max,

90s Japanese garage punk . . .

Mad 3 is definately one of the best instrumental band in the world. They
have LP on Time Bomb and 10" on Estrus. Jackie and the Cedricks
are pretty cool surf party band. Titans are another great band,
imagine Teengenerate meets Raunch Hands. They have new album
on Lance Rock. Fifi and Mach 3 from Yamaguchi has nice releases
on 1+2 label, and they have great female vocal with the sound of
the Ramones. Other bands worth to mention: Phantom Rats,
Pebbles, First Alert, Tonight, Gasoline, Antonio 3, Bousou Nezumi,
Switch Trout, Gyogun Rend's, etc etc.

Ex-Teengenerate members:
Fink just starts his new band called the Raydios, and they are
going to open for the Oblivians this month.
Fifi is in two bands now, one is the Tweezers who has an album
out on Time Bomb. The other is called Fire Starter with
another ex-Teengenerate Sammy on bass and Kawamoto
who is in the Titans. Fire Starter is more like Teengenerate
and they play Razor and Vibrators covers on live.
Shoe recently joined Supersnazz as their new drummer.

Evan, Save your three bucks. Here's what David Fricke wrote:

"Stuff you might have missed in 1997: The party-out-of-bounds, power-garage
splendor of the Swinging Neckbreakers on--talk about truth in advertising--Kick
Your Ass (Telstar, CD)."

That's all folks. If you still want the issue, it's the one with Mariah Carey
on the cover.

John,

I believe Ritualism was recorded live during an in-studio performance
when Radio Birdman was preparing for their reunion tour. I don't have
it, but that probably accounts for the recording quality. I had heard it
was a pretty lively performance. "Aloha Steve and Danno" appeared on the
overseas version of the Radios Appear LP. "Smith and Wesson Blues" is on
the Living Eyes LP. Don't think "Revelation" was released until
Ritualism.

If you want a hot album, grab the 1995 remix of "Living Eyes." Fantastic
production and great songs. It's a little pricey (I paid $22 at Venus),
but you'll love it. I think there's a remixed version of Radios Appear
as well, which you'd probably like to have.

This Saturday night, a great show at Coney Island High in NYC (on St
Mark's Place).
The Secret Service (going on first - be there by 9:15!)
   The Prissteens
   The Swinging Neckbreakers
   The Lyres
   ? and The Mysterians

Be seeing you,
Bill

Subject: The Move / Ace Kefford

I just went and looked up the Ace Kefford Stand and apparently they only
had one 45 which was an "inferior" cover of the Yardbirds' "For Your
Love." The B side was a tender sounding ditty called "Gravy Booby Jamm."
Undoubtedly a ballad. So I guess the less we know the better.
Apparently, Ace Kefford still performs Move tunes up in Birmingham and the
crowd gets misty everytime he breaks into "Blackberry Way" (though he had
left the Move before they did afforementioned tune). According to the
book BEAT MERCHANTS, Ace has had one of the hardest lives in rock 'n' roll
(as well as one of the coolest names. I mean ACE KEFFORD...wow!), though
the author didn't go into what made it so hard; I think there might be
another book coming out of that one.

Anyone out there in Bompland know of the sorrows and travails of
the Mighty Ace Kefford ex-bass player for the Move?

Wes
