Subject: Zombies

Recalling a recent thread about the marvellous Zombies box set, the
compiler of said box, Alec Palau, has written to me that he is also putting
together a kind of fanclub book for the Zombies, and one of the things he
wants to include is cover versions, to show just how influential their
songs were. (It's my guess that US bands covered more Zombies songs than
those of any other UK group, but who knows?) He has a pretty formidable
list already, which he could probably email to anyone seriously interested
in helping find additions. I'm sure there are dozens more he hasn't got.
He's only looking for stuff recorded in the '60s, though, so forget all
those modern bands. Anyone wishing to help, or just tell Alec what great
work he's doing, can email him at: palao@pop.sirius.com

Cheers,

Greg

Hi All,

I'm planning an interview with Phil Smee for my zine...lotsa questions to
ask him, from "Strange Things" and Bam Caruso years ago, to his recent
high implication in the "Brain/Rolled Gold" Action lp, and the Zombies
Heaven set...The problem is that the only contact I have is the "S. Things"
PO box adress, which is now more than outdated...could someone here be able
to help me with any snail mail, email, or fax informations with which I
could get in touch with him ?
thanx !!

Not only is it real, it was a hit! The Detergents had a string of novelty
singles and an album too. They were New York session hacks basically but a
lot of this stuff is great. They had especial fun with the pretentiousness
of the Shangri-Las ("who's that bangin' on the piano?!") but my favorite is
the non-hit "I Can Never Eat Home Anymore."

The Ace Kefford Stand had two releases on Atlantic in 1969. They
are both much too heavy for my taste. "For Your Love" can be heard on
Perfumed Garden. Members were Ace (real name Chris Kefford): v, b; Cozy
Powell: d; Dave Ball: v, lg; Dennis Ball: v, b

Looks like they had two bass players and no rhythm guitar. Can that be
right? Well the records sound like it I guess.

They also did the B-side of anotgher 1969 Atlantic single by 'BIG BERTHA,
"GRAVY, BOOBY JAM", a band including Ace and one Dave McTabish, a guitarist
known for his work with Tintern Abbey, and later with Smoke Stack Crumble.

And that's what I know about that....

That obnoxious French guy is JD Martignon, who founded Midnight some 20
years ago and has been a real supporter of cool music (as compared to, say,
Bleecker Bob). His high-strung personality makes him a funny guy sometimes
if you know him. He's really not so bad. However why are you, as a Bomp
list subscriber, buying Bomp records for our competition? What was he
charging for the Pebbles albums? We charge $5.... hard to beat. This space
isn't for advertising, but I wonder sometimes how many on this list
actually know what Bomp is...! We also carry one of the largest selections
of 60s reissues and
nw garage bands anywhere. Get a free catalog, or read it at our webside:
http://www.bomp.com/bomp/Mailorder.html

However, an area where Midnight, like Norton, is very good and that we
don't carry is all that fifties stuff, rockabilly, doo wop, blues, teenage
delinquent music, and so on. Their catalog is well worth persusing. They
get offbeat things (bootlegs) sometimes too.

I don't know. It's a shame if it isn't being maintained anymore, especially
if nothing's gonna be done with the videos. The guy video'd extensively at
Sleazefest '97. They did a 3-camera video shoot of every band, plus a guy was
doing an audio recording, too. Much better results than any of the stuff on
that Sleazefest '94 video. We have a video of our performance (the first few
songs were messed up, 'cause since we were the first band up - after the
infamous power outage - they were still trying to work out the bugs with the
video system). Plus tons of interviews were being taped, too. Hopefully
it'll see the light of day someday...

In his defense, it's a lot of work to pore through videos of 27 bands, and he
doesn't get paid to do any of it, so it just might be a matter of time before
it gets put out. BTW, the dates for Sleazefest '98 are gonna be August 7,8,
and 9.

I think the band was simply burned out from playing too much and needed a
well deserved break. Since their formation (summer '96) they played
something close to a hundred gigs and played and toured with Agent Orange,
Los Straitjackets, Satan's Pilgrims, the Neckbreakers, SCOTS, Fleshtones
and the list goes on and on...
They finished 1997 by recording a full length LP/CD in September, which
will hit the stores around March or so, and will start playing again around
that time. Also, the Space Cossacks plan to tour the west coast and mid
west for the first time this year. Their first Washington DC show will be a
record release party with the Fathoms, who will travel from Boston for this
event (this band will also celebrate along, as their new record comes out
the same day). A release party will also be held in Boston and the Space
Cossacks will travel up there for this one as well.

Hi Jaques,
yeah, I second your emotions about their new album! Please donīt expect a lame
reunion shit-type of release , itīs pure & simple magic! Okay, there are like one
or two songs that I donīt like that much, but "playing with jack" & "kool trash"
are classics already! Does this label has other releases worth checking out?

That was just a damn good band, especially in the early 60's... Even ol'

Keith and John were as mentioned above... "Out in the Streets" and "Call

Everyone's favorite Martian, ?, spent about 10 minutes on the phone last
night during the Dave The Spazz show on WFMU. During the interview he
talked a little about the new record he's working on with Jon Weiss (which
apparently will include an Alan Vega song called "Cherie Cherie," among
others), mentioned that the live recording of the awesome Cave Stomp set
would be out on Norton around the end of this month, confirmed that
oatmeal-raisin cookies would be available on Mars in about 250 years, and
credited Bomper di tutti Bompi Greg Shaw with coining the term garage rock

Fortunately, The Lovely Mrs. Davies was rolling tape at the time and is
pondering transcribing the interview and putting it on my web site. If she
does this (and you can encourage her by e-mailing her at
justina@juvalamu.com), I'll let you know where it is once it's available.

Sunday between 3pm and 6pm Eastern time (also available live via Real Audio

it the day after Cave Stomp, when he was also supposed to be a guest.

Hi to everyone on the list!
I recently got a record by Los Mockers, a 60's band from Uruguay that has
been mentioned here before from what I remember. The LP I got is
on a Spanish label (C.A.D.A. - "Historia de la musica pop Espanola"), and
contains 12 great original songs. Does anyone know whether Los Mockers
record released by Get Hip a few years ago contains the same material? Are
there any other recordings by Los Mockers available?

I would also like to ask about another band from Latin America. I'm not
sure about their name but it must be either Los Ciquos or Los Ciguos
(maybe I'm alltogether wrong though). I heard an amazing track by
them (I think the lyrics refer to the sun) and a friend told me their name
and he mentioned that they were either from Peru or Mexico and that
this song is included in the "Psychedelic Moods Vol.2" compilation
on Ciccadelic Records. I would appreciate any information about them (and
the correct spelling of their name...).

Back when I was a kid in the 60s, the local Woolworths used to sell boxes
of old 45s, 10 for a dollar. They came boxed in cardboard, and you could
only see what the top single was. I got a bunch of those boxes, and one
had "Leader of the Laundromat." It wasn't until years later that I heard
"Leader of the Pack" on the radio, and for the longest time, I thought it
was a take-off on "Leader of the Laundromat!"

At the time (I was about 11, I thought most of the singles in those boxes
were just junk.) Today, I view them as some of the coolest records I
own! Rare surf instrumentals, old Red Bird singles, and a lot of cool
picture sleeves! Those were the days! Best wishes, Keith Queensen,

Hey Bompers,

Here's your chance for a sneak preview of "Release 1.0" of my *official*
Swingin' Neckbreakers site. It's at http://www.juvalamu.com/neck/

Some things to keep in mind:

- - The first page you'll see at that address is a simple animated intro
page. I may ditch this as I'm having trouble getting decent download speed
while maintaining image quality. If you want, you can skip that page and
go directly to http://www.juvalamu.com/neck/index2.html

- - I'm planning to add scans of the album art and 7" sleeves to the Records!
page. I haven't had time to do all of them yet, and I don't think it's
necessary to wait for that before "launching" the site.

There's more I want to do with the site to give it more depth, but I think
it's at a point now where it's ready for public consumption. I'm eager to
hear your constructive criticism, ideas for other things to include, and
any other comments -- all of which can be sent to me directly, so as not to
clutter the list.

It's true, the only way to get them is from European sources. Many are
pressed only in editions of 300 or 400. Now the German and Italian stuff is
everywhere (for better of worse) but there's still tons of limited releases
coming out of Europe. Midnight has always had the habit of listing things
in their catatalog that they don't actually have yet, and sometimes never
get. It's not a reliable source. In fact I haven't found anyone in the US
who gets many of these Euro comps. But there are some fine dealers in
Europe, including Beat Behind the Dykes, Tracks on Wax, Wolfgang Volkel,
and one you may not know of, but he's running the Bomp operation in Germany
now, and has a cool website, and he can usually get any Euro comp at fair
prices. His name is Harry, the URL is: http://www.vinyl.de/, and the email
address is: BOMP! D.C. Schallplatten GmbH.

Just a suggestion.....

Well, as far as I know, Fink's new band is called the Raydios. They did
two shows in December and they are playing with the Oblivians and
Guitar Wolf at a club in Tokyo this month. I went to the one of
the show in December but I missed them out since they are the
first band played out of 12 bands. They just started so they don't
have anything released yet.

> Anyone know anything about Engine Boo, too????
>
As Jason wrote, Engine Boo has one EP on Wallabies, and
has two songs on Chloroform comp. on Mangrove. They were
playing shows in the fall of 1996 when Chlofororm comp was
released, but since then I haven't noticed they were playing
any gigs in Tokyo.
"Chloroform" is actually the name of the series gig promoted
by the Registrators and the Knocks, and actually some of bands
on Chloroform LP are not around any more. Cock Scratch
is gone (the guitar player is in a new band called Intimate Fags).
The Registrators, Tonight, Young Ones and Fifi's Fire Starter
are the current line-up of Chloroform gigs. First Alert is from
Kyoto in the west part of Japan and they come to Tokyo
a few times a year. First Alert supported the Drones Japan
tour in December.

If you like Chloroform bands, you will like Phantom Rats,
who play Devil Dogs type of fast 77 punk with some
decent song writing skill (and bad lyrics if you really care).
They have one song on that Estrus benefit CD, but they
called its quit in the February of 1997. Phantom Rats
has two albums and two EPs on 1+2 and one really
good EP called "Get Out" on Freaked Out Frequencies
label in Netherland.

The best drummer of the current Japanese garage bands
is Kyo of Mad 3, which is pretty known to anyone here
into the current garage scene. especially when they
play Caravan on live (originally Duke Elington's song,
and coverd in Al Casey's Surfin' Hootenany LP). You won't
believe it until you see him playing, but this guy gets
unbelievable stage move behind the drum set.
The other two of Mad 3 are also one of the best
guitar / bass players in Japan.

I have several Beef Boots, the older vinyl ones are not that great, but
I would strongly recommend the cd-issued "The Early Years 1959-1969." It
has pretty good sound, and contains some of the best cuts off of several
different earlier boots, plus some things I never saw elsewhere. There
are like 3 real early cuts (Zappa is on them or produces), pre-A&M, then 5
cuts "Live at the Avalon 1968" which might actually be earlier, then some
demos ca. the "Safe As Milk" album, finally 8 cuts from a demo made for
"Trout Mask Replica." The latter cuts are similar to the album versions,
just primitively recorded and more "live" sounding. 71 minutes of stuff,
probably the best outtakes and only live material around from his early
years. I got mine about 4 years ago at Venus Records in NYC for $25
(ouch), haven't seen it since then.

Yeah, a few years ago, Entwhistle was asked what he thought of Keith Moon's
drumming and he replied something about Moon being a great person but not
such a great musician. Perhaps my statement was exaggeration based on
John's comment but it seems that Keith was alway being backhandedly
complimented at best by Pete, too.

Subject: Panther and Doric Organs

While digging for gold at a junk-filled music store today I found the legs to
a Panther organ. The legs are in the same style case as Vox organ legs came in
but the stand is not the Z-stand of Voxes. To my knowledge, Vox didn't make a
Panther. If they did, I must have one to make my Vox organ lineup complete.
Can someone tell me who made the Panther and a little about it? (I do know
from the leg case that these were made in Italy.)

In the same room there was a combo organ made by Doric. It's grey and much
thinner than the Voxes and had presets instead of drawbars. It looked like it
came from the '60s but I could not tell. Anyone know anything about Doric
organs? It actually looked really nice, like a cross between a Vox (built
thin) and a Farfisa (all white keys and presets).

Also in this room, which was literally piled with keyboards that used to cost
thousands of dollars, was an Arp Omni, a Hohner String Ensemble and a couple
Wurlitzer pianos. Incidentally, I did buy a Wurlitzer, which was my whole
purpose for this excursion. I paid $325 for one in near mint condition, which
was a good $50 more than I intended to pay, but it looked at me with those
warm little keys and, well, you Bompers know the rest. (This was the keyboard
of choice for the Sonics, of course, so I had to have one!)

One drummer I think is really underrated is the guy from the Hollies,
Bobby Elliott. If you have seen some of the Beat Beat Beat or Beat Club
clips of them live, you will know what I am talking about. This guy was
just a master of what he was doing, and played in a very playful,
casual-looking way onstage. While Keith Moon was hyperkinetic and almost
violent, this guy is just chomping some gum, laying down the beat, but
when he neets to put in a bit of extra fill or something, he does it very
spiritedly, with sort of a bemused grin as he bashes his cymbals almost
sloppily, but perfectly. He made me think of a guy who is working 9 to 5
running a jackhammer, but does it better than anybody else, knows it, and
despite the somewhat unglamorous role, takes pride in what he does and is
always right on the money.

But, 60s records are full of great drumming... and great SOUNDING
drumming (before they decided to record them as though they were playing
10 separate instruments that each were mic'ed and equalized differently,
instead of a 'drum kit').

I agree that Bobby Elliott is one of the true greats, as
evinced by (among others) "Look Through Any Window",
"Stay", and the strange triangular flicks at the start
of "If I Needed Someone".

Another drummer who often leaves me literally speechless
is Hugh Grundy of the Zombies -- turn your ears to the
totally sublime "Just Out of Reach", "Tell Her No" or
"Whenever You're Ready", especially the one-take,
one-track BBC versions.

GREAT news (from Billboard Magazine, don't sue me, dammit!)

VELVEL GETS KINKS OUT WITH REISSUES: While the Kinks' legacy resonates through
the work of such Britpop acts as Blur and Oasis, much of the Kinks' catalog
has been unavailable for years. A new deal with Velvel Records should remedy
the situation, as the indie is reissuing 15 of the band's albums from the '70s
and '80s. The sets "Muswell Hillbillies" and "Everybody's In Show-Biz" will be
the pact's first fruits, arriving April 28. Alternate takes, extensive liner
notes, and original artwork will also accompany the remastered reissues. "The
records all sound very exciting to me," says Kinks founder Ray Davies. "In
fact, listening back to them made me realize how important those years were to
the band."
