As far as Silver Apples on the CD format is concerned, originally they
were officially out of print but a bootleg German label called TRG was
putting the two albums on an unauthorized single CD. Then just recently
the two albums were officially reissued separately, I forgot the label
which did it. I've already got the TRG single CD, but it's possible that
the new MCA reissue, being an authorized and legitimate release, will
probably have far better recording and sound quality (since presumably
they had access to the master tapes and the technology to remix them) as
well as thorough and informative liner notes in the CD packaging.

> Has anyone seen the new Silver Apples live?

I haven't yet, but I will this coming mid-April at the Terrastock West
festival in San Francisco.

For what it's worth, I've heard very mixed things about their recent live
performances, as well as their new material. Not having seen 'em live -
yet - I'll reserve judgement, but I will say that if they did suck, it
wouldn't be too shocking. After all, they're a band from the '60s which
is now comprised of only the original lead singer who's well into this
fifties backed by some younger sidemen - doesn't that sound eerily similar
to a certain band that many of us Bompers saw at CaveStomp? Maybe if
we're really lucky Simeon will open his shirt the same way the Shadows of
Knight's Jim Sohns did. ;-)

I wonder if anyone else from this list will be at Terrastock (besides
myself and presumably Chris Barrus). After all, Silver Apples ain't your
typical Bomp band (nothing wrong with that), and Terrastock ain't exactly
CaveStomp or Garage Shock. Although one of the bands at Terrastock is
Mudhoney, who are very much a garage-influenced band. I wonder why I've
never seen Mudhoney mentioned on this list.

One of the great, unsung, drum performances of all time is "Stay Awhile"
by Dusty Springfield. Go listen to it and see what I mean. The drummer
was Clem Cattini.

Quite honestly, they've never done much for me. I'd occasionally stumble
into them on a bill with someone I liked (for instance, that New Year's Eve
gig at Maxwells about 6-7 years ago when they shared the stage with The
Mummies & The Lyres), but they never really got me moving. They were OK,
but nothing that kept me in the room, really. (They didn't drive me out,
but I was quite content to just kinda hang out with friends and talk while
they were on.) Interestingly, tho', the times I saw them, it kept looking
like the lead singer was slowly morphing into a Jeff Conolly lookalike.

The only thing I can remember about the Panther (mine's in a closet right
now and my landlord's working in that room) is the name "Elka" is also on
it. I believe they're the company who put it out. Unfortunately, mine has
a note that's just... off. Inside they seem to use those same kind of
coils that you find in the Farfisa Combo Compact Deluxe. And the one for
said note on mine was rotted out. (Not that I can complain, considering
that mine was a gift.) Dave Amels (Voce Inc., and the organ guy on much of
the Swingin' Neckbreakers' stuff) came over a couple years ago and tried to
swap in a Farfisa coil, but it was still way off key. He tried hollowing
it out a bit, but that didn't work, either. Basically, I'm saying I need a
new Panther. ;-) A very cool organ. The mixture knobs, especially, are
cool. One of these days I'll get it up and running and I'll post some pics
on a web page... plus maybe a couple sound clips.

The 2-fer issue on cd by MCA is defintitely the way to go. There
is also a reissue of each lp on single cd's w/b&w poorly reproduced
covers. These I understand are to be avoided as they have been
dubbed(poorly) from vinyl and the packaging is shoddy, though they are
actually done by Simeon of the band. I saw them earlier this year and
they basically sound like a somewhat more modern version of their
original sound, pretty decent. I've heard a few recently recorded
tracks from singles and eps and was disappointed....Seemed like all the
wildness and rough edges/electronics that made the original material so
compelling had been smoothed out and streamlined. I'm
sure the band has it's own page so when I get the address I'll post it
for those interested.

Good point! The thing that bothers me the most about individually mic'ed
drums is that the toms are always so damn "panned" (left and right). They
sound like they are in different rooms, for crissakes! Just hang a mic on the
ceiling somewhere and maybe one on the floor...jeepers!

How about the drummer from Big Star? (Jody Stephens)
It's kind of an overblown style but it works...

There's always Hal Blaine...

More -
Billy Ficca from Television
Stevie Wonder
Al Jackson from Booker T.
Dave Grohl
Pete Thomas from The Attractions
Scott Krauss from Pere Ubu
whoever plays on Aretha's Chain of Fools
Mo Tucker
Mike Clarke of the Byrds
Fred Maher on Matthew Sweet's Girlfriend among other things (esp. Massacre

the guy in Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion
Jimmy Carl Black
Andy Capps on Built to Spill's album There's Nothing Wrong With Love
Bob Fay and Eric Gaffney from Sebadoh
whoever plays on Ralph Neilson's Scream

there's probably more -

I have a friend with a Panther - none of the C's work but it sounds great thru
a small Peavey amp and a fuzz box. I'll get back to ya when I see him.

Hi Bomp people
Got some sad news to report from Oxford, Mississippi. Jr. Kimbrough died
today. He had a heart attack in his sleep. He has been sick for a while but
everyone thought he was doing better. A friend of mine saw him yesterday and
he was wanting to get out and play. He was a great one and will be missed.
