Yes, "The Sun Is Going Black" must have been the song that I heard and
really liked. Thanks for the information Jim. Does anyone know anything
more about Los Chijuas? Are other tracks by them available in any other
compilations? And what about Psychedelic Moods, Part 2? Saddly I suppose
it should be very hard to find on vinyl, although I heard that some (all?)
of the Cicadelic Records' releases were reissued on CD by Collectables...

So I'm writing this partly to ask if the rest of you have experienced the

Subject: Carl Perkins dies

Any comment would be instantly superfluous. --tpu

Rock 'n' roll legend Carl Perkins dies at 65

JACKSON, Tenn. (Reuters) - Rock 'n' roll pioneer
Carl Perkins, whose hit song "Blue Suede Shoes"
helped lift Elvis Presley to stardom, died Monday
 at age 65.

A family spokesman said Perkins died this morning of
complications from a series of strokes he suffered
during the past two months at Jackson-Madison County
 General Hospital.

Perkins' death comes more than four years after he
overcame a battle with throat cancer and about 15
months after the October 1996 release of his album,
"Go, Cat, Go," featuring collaborations with ex-Beatle
George Harrison, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Paul Simon,
Bono of U2 and John Fogerty.

In June of last year, Perkins underwent angioplasty
surgery to clear a blocked carotid artery.

The son of a tenant farmer in Tennessee, the singer-
guitarist was among several rockabilly performers to
emerge from Memphis' famed Sun Studios whose fast-
paced tunes and twangy lyrics would influence dozens of
rockers to come, including the Beatles, Bob Dylan
 and Eric Clapton.

At the same time that Perkins was helping launch rock
music from his country roots, Chuck Berry's machine-gun
guitar licks were reinventing the blues as rock 'n' roll.

The two, along with Little Richard, are regarded as perhaps
the key figures in the birth of rock in the late 1950s.

The late John Lennon once said "there was no music before
Sun (Studios)," and the Beatles would record three Perkins
songs after meeting him at a 1964 recording session --
"Honey Don't," "Matchbox" and "Everybody's Trying to Be My
 Baby."

But Perkins is probably best remembered for "Blue Suede
Shoes," one of the signature songs of rock 'n' roll.

Before Presley turned "Blue Suede Shoes" into the first
song to simultaneously top the pop, country and rhythm
and blues charts, Perkins received his first dose of
stardom when he wrote and recorded it in 1956 and sold 2
 million copies.

Delivering the opening address at the South By Southwest
music and media conference in Austin, Texas, in March 1997,
Perkins remembered Presley as the consumate performer.

"Elvis had it all. He had the looks, the talent, and, the
world knows, he had the moves. He was perfect. He was
pretty. He was one of the few people I knew who could burp
 and get a standing ovation."

On stage, the curly-haired Perkins' shuffle was mild compared
to the wild-limbed performances by Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis,
but like those artists, Perkins had a long bout with alcohol
that sometimes led him to improvise song lyrics.

Besides writing songs that other performers turned into hits,
Perkins was much-imitated by the young Dylan, Clapton, Fogerty
and Harrison, all of whom acknowledged copying his style before
 developing their own.

Perkins also wrote "Daddy Sang Bass" for another Sun Studios
veteran, Johnny Cash, and the pair would spend a decade touring
together and once performed at the White House.

Perkins received the National Academy of Recording Arts
and Sciences "Hall of Fame" award for "Blue Suede Shoes" in 1986
and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the
 following year.

He also won a Grammy in 1986 for best spoken-word or non-musical
recording for "Interviews from the Class of 55 Recording Sessions"
-- an honor he shared with Cash, Lewis, Rick Nelson, Sam Phillips
 and Roy Orbison.

Perkins' early career was marred by tragedy.

He was on his way to New York for a TV appearance to play "Blue
Suede Shoes" in 1956 when he was severely injured in a car wreck.
His brother, Jay, later died from injuries he sustained in the
 wreck.

Perkins was hospitalized again in 1963 after the exposed blades
of a rotary fan tore through his hand during a performance at a
 political fundraiser in Tennessee.

In 1991, he was forced to stop touring to undergo treatment for
lung cancer and later successfully battled throat cancer. He
endured surgery on a blocked artery in his neck in June last
year and subsequently suffered a series of strokes.

Back on stage after his initial bout with cancer, he
said "I know how precious and fragile life is now."

A prolific composer throughout his career, Perkins wrote
"So Wrong" for Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton's "Silver and Gold,"
the Judds' "Let Me Tell You About Love" and George Strait's
 "A Man on His Own."

In his later years, Perkins often was accompanied by his sons
Stan on drums and Greg on bass. He also helped found a center
for child abuse victims in his long-time hometown of Jackson.

I haven't seen a reissue of an LP for years. The last LP was
Johnny Kidd & the Pirates -Rarities but includes an alternate version of
'Shakin all over' from 1965.
A CD came out in 92 called 'The Complete Johnny Kidd' and it has everything
including alternate takes of tracks etc.(62 tracks in all w/ a cool little
booklet, put out by EMI records). I actually bought this at a Tower records a
couple years back. Unfortunately, I don't know if it's still available.
