Hey Blair,

It's Matt the bass player who had the same Monoman "doo". In fact,
there's some Lyres album from Spain that has a cartoon mimmicking
this scenario. Facially they even look the same.
Mark Arm does not look like Monoman at all.

Hi Dinos,

Psychedelic Moods, Part 2 came out on CD (on Collectables) in 1993,
with 8 bonus tracks (none by the Chuijuas). I imagine copies can still
be
ordered. The liner notes don't have much to say, other than that the
band
was from Ciudad Juarez in the state of Chihuahua, and the tracks come
from a
1968 demo-only album. I don't think there are any other comp appearances
by
this band.

If so, I'm gonna have to look at the M section next time I'm at the store.
This should be pretty well distributed.

I always liked Jody Stephens a lot myself, and he was also a big influence
on another of my all-time faves (and a lefty), Will Rigby from the dBs.
(When I was at NYU, a friend of mine was good friends with Will and told me
that he used to sit in her apartment listening to Big Star records and
air-drum along.)

I also can't let this thread slip by (my fan club membership would be

Upper Crust, and also formerly of the Lyres and Bags. While I realize that
they're not for everyone, I defy anyone who enjoys good drummers to see

Subject: Are the kids REALLY alright?

I just picked up the latest issue of MAGNET, the "Year In Music" issue,
and they had an article on the Oblivians. The last two paragraphs of the
article hit just a little too close to home for me...

"But not everyone has been seduced by the Oblivians' brand of soulful
sleaze. 'If the kids don't hate it, it ain't rock'n'roll,' says Eric [one
of the three members], echoing the motto of his Goner label. 'It gets
truer every day.'
"It's safe to say the Oblivians don't have much of a constituency
among the wide-legged citizens of the Big Pants Nation, because they are
real rock'n'roll. As a result, all-ages shows rarely appear on the tour
itinerary. 'We have a hard time not drinking,' says Eric. 'That, and we
don't know any ska songs.'"

(written for MAGNET by Jonathan Valania, who BTW is also the leader of the
Psyclone Rangers)

Am I the only one who finds the statement a little disturbing, especially
since I agree with it? You know times are changing when someone makes a
statement like "If the kids don't hate it, it ain't rock'n'roll." And you
also know times are changing when you find yourself agreeing with that
statement.

I must say, not only do I find the oversize pants repulsive, but I can't
say I care for a lot of the music today's kids are into. Especially as
far as punk rock is concerned. I hate NOFX and Pennywise, and that's the
so-called "punk rock" of choice among today's teenagers. I'm not sure
what's worse - A) the notion that today's kids just have punk rock totally
wrong and seem to prefer shit music over the real thing, which happens to
be my own opinion, or B) the equally disturbing possibility that, at the
age of 28, I'm simply turning into an old fart who is completely out of
touch with the current trends and what today's kids are into and that it's
ME who doesn't know shit about punk rock today.

hooked. Altho the Guess Who do a fine version and of course the Who do
their own take of it on Leeds, there's never been a purer version than this
one for my money.

This is a bit scary.. When I meet someone who doesn't know weird music,
and make a mix tape to introduce them to the wide world of wacky records,
the following songs MUST be on it:

>Hound Dog Taylor "Give Me Back My Wig" (S/T, Alligator)
>Little Willie John "Spasms" (Fever, Rhino)
>The Blues Magoos "Tobacco Road" (Kaleidescopic Compendium, Mercury)
>The Pleasure Seekers "What A Way To Die" (V/A Michigan Mayhem Vol.1, More
>Fun)
>Screamin' Jay Hawkins "Feast Of The Mau Mau" (Feast Of The Mau Mau, Edsel)
(sometimes, if the person has a strong stomach, I put "Constipation Blues"
instead)

That's a pretty high rate of correlation for one radio show... Loved the
60's set, too...

sounded like Stereolab. If anyone out there knows more about Porto

That's right. Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but my
understanding is that Infinite Zero is a joint venture between
Henry Rollins and American label head Rick Rubin.

At the moment, American Recordings is in a very shaky position - they've
been in financial trouble for quite some time, and they've either dropped
or lost a lot of their roster; until recently they were the US
distributor for UK indie Too Pure. Latest word has it that American
is parting ways with Warner and Rubin is moving his label to Sony.

Maybe, or maybe not, for the reasons I gave above. If you do find the
Monks CD, get it, because it's a pretty cool record. It does take a while
to grow on you, though. I think the best way to appreciate the record is
to understand the context it came out in - it may seem a bit hokey to
people today, but as I understand it, by the standards of the time it was
just outright confrontational. And it's hard not to get taken in by the
record's general weirdness. I mean, c'mon, how can you not like songs
like "Drunken Maria" or "Boys Are Boys And Girls Are Choice"?

I'm with John on this one, though I'm more bemused than disturbed by the
fact that, somehow, every generation seems to find something that pisses
off the one that came before. One could easily go back through the years
and replace "oversize pants" with "dyed hair," "ripped jeans," "platform
shoes," "long hair," etc.

I hate to say it, but I think A is an outgrowth of B. But you're narrowing
the field too much by suggesting that because you're not into the music
today's kids are into, you don't know about punk rock today. You might
also take solace in the fact that you're most likely completely out of
touch with what today's grown-ups are into. I've never been less informed
about what's happening in the musical mainstream, and I've never been happier.

Ah, as far as I know it's still available in the UK at least, 'cos I seem to
see it in the stores from time to time. It's got both the original and
alternate takes of 'Shakin'', and loads of other good stuff (tho' the 60's
stuff's none too good - he updates himself to sound like a limp version of the
Beatles). In anycase, it's budget price, so you can't fail.

Sean.

I don't begin to understand how musical tastes are formed. I've always felt
"Kids gotta have their own music" so I've tried to let my kids have theirs.
Guess what, my teenage son listens to Hendrix and Santana. Go figure.

I don't care much for today's punk either. What really worries me is that, in
attempting to find music which pisses off earlier generations (Evan's statement)
we get...Marilyn Manson. Yikes, is this guy's act pathetic or what?

Subject: Pre-Beatles Brit Rock / Rory Storm

1.) I've been thinking about this for a while, and the recent Johnny Kidd
thread reminded me...

Well, the question is basically; can anyone think of anything worthwhile to
come out of 'this green and pleasant land' in terms of rock and roll prior to
the Beatles? I mean, it's taken as fact Britain was a cultural oasis until
1963, but there must have been something, right? I have compiled my own
extensive list of pre-lennon/mccartney British r'n'r, and it goes something
like this:

Johnny Kidd and the Pirates
Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages

Hrmmm...Anything to add?

2.) As I understand it, around the time of the Beatles there was a Liverpool
based r'n'r band name of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes for which Ringo
origanall played drums. Ringo was a flash dude, the band were flash dudes, and
supposedly better than the Beatles (although I can't remember by what term of
reference). Anyhow, incorrectly tipped to be the next big thing, they ended up
pretty obscure - remembered only by people who read Record Collector and breath
thru' their mouths. Anyone know what happened to them? Any of their stuff
been re-released worth picking up?

Cheers

Sean.

seeing on the list that he was in San Francisco at Great Amer Music Hall on
Jan. 30th . I would think he would do a show in L.A. between those tymes but
haven't seen anything yet. Tony

Subject: Radio Rumpus Room playlist for 1/16/98

Here's the rock'em-sock'em Radio Rumpus Room playlist for Friday, January
16, 1998:

SAVVY SHOW STARTER (always locally recorded!)
Bong Ritual -- Rump Shakin' Floozy (audience tape, Turf Club, St. Paul; 8/7/97)
Forced by nonavailability of formal "product" to play an audience DAT I
made of these boys last summer, I watched with amusement as the host of the
local music show preceding ours pawed frantically through our CDs,
exclaiming "how come I didn't get this!?!" The man was STOKED. Okay, their
name doesn't fall out of the standard surf/instro rulebook, but this
powerhouse Minneapolis instro trio just flat out FLIES. An occasional cover
(Satan's Pilgrims' "Haunted House" and Billy Childish's "Lie Detector")
find their way into the sets, but this band's output is far and away
original. We love these guys, who will -- fairly soon -- have a 7-inch out
featuring "Moondisks" and "Sex On The Wagon Train."

SPLISH SPLASH, I WAS TAKIN' A BATH... THE WET SOUND SET
Space Cossacks -- Red Sunrise (Space Cossacks/Fathoms split 7-inch EP, MuSick)
Los Mel-tones -- Break Point (Surfin' At Black Point, Halakahiki)
Fathoms -- Fathomized (Space Cossacks/Fathoms split 7-inch EP, MuSick)
Untamed Youth -- The Hearse (Untamed Melodies, Norton)

THE _R_ WORD SET
Ray Harris -- Come On Little Mama (The Sun Box, Charly)
Johnny Burnette -- You're Undecided (...And The Rock'n'Roll Trio, Official)
Charlie Feathers -- One Hand Loose (I forget...)
Ray Campi -- Tear It Down (Train Rhythm Blue, Mouthpiece/Sci-Fi)
Wanda Jackson -- Riot In Cell Block Number 9 (Vintage Collections, Capitol
Nashville)

Small Faces -- All Or Nothing (...The Anthology, 1965-1967; Deram)
New Colony Six -- At The Rivers Edge (Pebbles Vol.9, BFD)
Wheels -- Call My Name (Belfast Beat Maritime Blues, Big Beat)
Ike & Tina Turner -- Worried And Hurtin' Inside (The Sue Records Story box,
EMI)

Wailers -- Tall Cool One '64 (The Fabulous Wailers, Globe)
Los Locos Del Ritmo -- Morelia (Blue Demon's Mexican Rock And Roll Favorites)
Boss Martians -- More Booze Less Ice (The Intoxicating Sounds Of...,
Continental)
Phantom Surfers -- Popcorn (Play The Music From The Big-Screen
Spectaculars, Estrus)

SOMETIMES YOU WANNA HEAR A STORY (SET)
Lonesome Bob -- Heaven's Gate (Things Fall Apart, Checkered Past)
Bob Dylan -- Standing In The Doorway (Time Out Of Mind, Columbia)
Bottle Rockets -- Turn For The Worse (24 Hours A Day, Atlantic)

TWISTED PSYCH(E) SET
Lowell George (yeah, that one) -- The Loved One (Michigan Nuggets, Belvedere)
Q65 -- I've Got Nightmares (Pebbles Vol.4, ESD)
Southbound Freeway -- Psychedelic Used Car Lot (Psychedelic Frequencies,
Temple)
