Yep, that's correct. There were some problems with the list over the
weekend. I sent out a message on Tuesday that I'd received from Bolis
explaing the problem. I saw it in the digest, but I never received it
separately. I won't burden digest subscribers by posting the whole thing
again; in a nutshell, there was an outage between bolis.com and the
Internet.

It's SOOOOO nice to run into a "kid" who not only has good taste, but can
express himself well! That didn't use to be an unusual set of
characteristics....

I'd say there were a lot more punks among the high school kids back in the
70's than there are kids into *any* kind of REAL ROCK N ROLL now, but yeah,
your perceptions are definitely correct. Punk kids would get hooted in
school - I'm just as glad I was through college by then, heh...

>At least we don't listen to Disco,

Whoa, hold on a minute! As much as I detested and made fun of Disco, Kool
and the Gang rock RINGS around the pablum most kids are listening to now!
Ha!

I graduated in '81, and I remember the summer before my senior year
when I officially "got into" punk rock (thanks to a neighbor from college
who played me Vom, the Ramones, PiL, Sex Pistols, Magazine, the Rezillos,
the Saints). Suddenly I went from being a weird but tolerated geek to the
subject of intense hatred and rumor. Why? 'Cause I cut my hair and stopped
listening to Skynyrd.
There were 6 people in my school who were into music you didn't
hear on the radio. Everyone was afraid of us, even the girl who was just
into power-pop and new wave. My friend Steve got sent home for wearing a
Buzzcocks t-shirt, because the Assistant Principal thought that it referred
to castration. The only thing we had in common was musical curiosity,
because we didn't even listen to the same kinds of "punk".
It would be naive to think that the mob mentality has changed just
because now the mob listens to watered-down hard rock disguised as punk.
It's just not as easy to spot the weirdos who listen to good music as it
used to be - at least not by the clothes they wear.
For example, speaking of the Oblivians, at their last show in L.A.,
while we waited for their set, a friend and I were shouldered aside by a
pair of sullen baggy-pantsed morons who glared dully at us with confusion.
My friend said to me, "You know, at least I could understand those asshole
jocks and fratboys who wanted to beat up fags. What I can't understand is
this new breed - exactly the same, except he's wearing a nose ring!"

An old fart to the core,
Rick

Subject: Re: The Screamin' Mee-Mees/Customs

As I go to hit the "send" button, I notice a few other posts come in to
cover some of the below, but here 'tis anyway, let's make this
"Screamin' Mee-Mees Day!" Karl

Those "two guys" being John Ashline and Bruce Cole. The self released
LP (from '92 on the Dog Face imprint, DF-002, the debut single was
DF-001) was called 'Clutching Hand Monster Mitt' and is great damaged
music, perhaps better than the debut single, with cuts like "Psycho Ward
Reunion" and "Surface Of The Moon". The followup LP on Bag Of Hammers
from '96 is called 'Nude Invisible Foot Phenomenon'. There have been
several Mee-Mees singles released in the last few years. A locally
(Missouri) produced single on the Electric label ("Pull My Finger/Family
Tree",'93), a great 1994 single on the Aussie Dog Meat label ("Life
Never Stops/Oscillations" -- yes, a Silver Apples cover), a 1995 four
song ep on BOH, 'Home Movies', was actually recorded in '78 as a
followup to the 'Live From The Basement' debut but wasn't released at
the time. A not to be missed 1996 release on the New World Of Sound
label was a split single with Columbus Ohio legends Mike Rep and the
Quotas (of "Rocket To Nowhere" fame), made in homage to their
late-seventies contemporaries, Sacramento's legendary (and soon to be
reissued -- by me!) Twinkeyz (the Mee-Mees tackle "Cartoon Land", and
the Quotas do "Aliens In Our Midst"). Another single on the Dutch label
Brinkman saw the light of day in '96, "Answer Me/Arthritis Today". I
believe there was also a cut by the dynamic duo included on a single
included with a fanzine from a couple years ago (Whump? I have it here
somewhere), as well as a self-released cassette that appeared in the
late 80s. Bruce Cole has been dabbling with "solo" material as well,
though I'm not sure exactly what that entails.

Re: Customs...funny it should get brought up, I was just thinking I'd
like to post something about this too, as I picked up the 'Real Long
Gone' CD on Shake It and have been playing it a bunch. The first thing
that comes to mind when listening to this is how much less
self-conscious this is than most of today's extant "garage" scene, this
actually delivering the goods like "real" Rock and Roll should, and not
coming across like a ham-handed monochromatic facsimile like the vast
majority of today's "prolific" sound-a-likes (hey, the Screamin'
Mee-Mees might not be "great" musicians, but they can certainly
translate their personal vision onto wax, you can't say that for
everybody, that's for sure -- assuming "they" even "have" a vision to
begin with, of course). Though I was familiar with the cut "Long Gone"
(a friend had the single and I knew the Devil Dogs covered it on a
Sympathy single about 5 years ago), I had no idea that Peter Greenberg
was in the group til I picked up this CD. His piercing leads really put
this over the top, I'd like to know the exact details on him leaving
DMZ, moving to Cincinnati (presumably) to play with the Customs, then
returning to Boston to join the Lyres. Was he not on the first Lyres
single on Sounds Interesting from '79 (maybe not? I have it but can't
pull it out to check)? Seems like a mighty small time frame to be in
several great Rock and Roll bands. Karl

I don't know either but I picked it up at my local store less than six
months ago so perhaps it can still be had from some distributors. Its
well worth having and a great record of one of Britain's rockinest
pre-Beatles bands.

Boyd, I think there are a couple of college or public radio stations in
Columbia, right? Have you ever thought of doing your own radio show? You
should check into it! I've heard that people can pick up The Wayback
Machine there late at night (after one of the Columbia stations goes off
the air) which is pretty cool considering Columbia is 110 miles west of
St. Louis, but the signal must be VERY weak.

It depends on what you wanna label "punk rock" these days. Yes, there's
a lot of so-called punk on the commercial alternative (modern
rock/whatever) airwaves, but if you listen close enough, there's not
much difference between that stuff and the commercial pop/stuff that has
been popular throughout time. Once again, just like it was when I was in
highschool in the early 80's, real rock'n'roll or the really rebellious
punk music is still very underground, as evidenced by the lack of
attention garage or even surf or rockabilly music gets in the mainstream
media (and I'm not talking about the occasional blasting of "Blitzkrieg
Bop," "Rock This Town" or "Misirlou" at professional sporting events).
When I was in highschool there were maybe a dozen kids (in a school of
over 2400 students) that had ever heard The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Germs,
Circle Jerks, JFA, etc. (Keep in mind this IS the midwest!). I bet that
compares pretty much equally to the number who today are listening to
The Makers, The Oblivians, The Swingin' Neckbreakers or The Untamed
Youth. Yeah, there were a lot of 'em back then who were into Duran Duran
& INXS (ya know, the "weird but still cool" new wave stuff) just like
there's a lot into Marilyn Manson or Prodigy or Compuserve or whatever
any of that new shit is today. But there is hope... bands like Southern
Culture On The Skids, Man or Astro-Man, The Cramps, The New Bomb Turks,
etc. are helping to keep at least some semblance of primitive
rock'n'roll music in the public ear. As for kids these days not having a
clue... I don't think kids in general have EVER had a clue. Nothing's
changed, IMHO. And I think that's the point Eric Oblivian was making.

I still think of the Hanson Brothers when I hear someone mention Hanson.
Guess I AM an old fart...

I'm sure you were talking about the Hockey Hanson Brothers, but a few months
ago I was going to go see the punk Hanson Brothers and whilst I was asking
around to see if someone wanted to go, I kept getting either: berated in a
violent manner and/or a long, blank, emotionless stare before being blown
off.

I couldn't figure it out. I had no idea that there was a group of cockeyed
little rugrats calling themselves "Hanson" and lo and behold they were
BROTHERS! Yet I think other people are *out of touch*...

What are you doing home at this hour anyway Kopper? Does CompUSA know? Heh
heh...

Captain Kirk

P.S. Does anyone know if the *new* (well latest) Hanson Brothers album was
ever released domestically in the USofA? I know it came out on the Canadian
division of Virgin records (weird - I sez again, WEIRD), but I didn't know
if it was ever released on this side of North America by Alternative
Tentacles or who have you. I ask because I've never seen it here in St. Lou,
and the only place I've seen it was at the Dummyroom in Chicago.

P.P.S. Is the Dummyroom still around?

I'll stop now.

The thing we have to remember is that a lot of the music any generations kids
have been into has been weak. Don't just lump these kids together. I
graduated high school in 1984 on the south shore of LI and most of my peers if
they even listened to music at all were into Journey, Cindi Lauper, Richard
Marx, Styx, Lionel Ritchie, Kenny Loggins, Meatloaf, Foreigner, MTV artists,
or just a lot of classic rock from the early 70's. These kids wore straight
leg jeans and they were still dicks. There were very few kids who even knew
what garage, punk, or REM was, (or heck even heavy metal or prog).
The point -- there is good stuff out there, you just have to dig for it just
like kids with a clue in the past would've dug for The Stooges, Count Five,
Dolls, Roxy Music, Chocolate Watch Band, X-Ray Specs, Link Wray, Ween, Live
Skull, Kraftwerk, et al. their respective eras. I'd like to think there's a
kid out there right now listening to Man or Astroman? and saying "cool!!!"

I think it's the internet. I've been into the stuff for nearly 8 years, and
I've still never spoken to another garage fan in real life. But then, I guess,
how would I know if I had? Maybe I just don't know the secret handshake.

Right! And that something is the movie Beat Girl (1960), starring the
savage young rocker Adam Faith, and also the savage beatnik Oliver Reed!
There's rebelious rock attitude in spades in this one! It's actually a
pretty good movie, a precursor to Britain's gritty, caste-conscious
"Kitchen sink" (I THINK that's what they called it, at least!) school of
film. Videoflicks synopsis: "A WILD TEEN EXPLOITATION FILM SET IN ENGLAND
ABOUT A YOUNG GIRL WHO FOLLOWS IN MUM'S FOOTSTEPS AND BECOMES A STRIPPER.
JOHN (JAMES BOND) BARRY DOES THE MUSIC. A.K.A.'WILD FOR KICKS.'"

It's on video. Plus, the Omega Men recently covered the title song.

surely you can blame for all this change from underground to alternative
nirvana.
As a friend of mine said "in order to f... at todays youth parties you
must have dope and nirvana's record".
One of the reasons that i do not go to any other concerts except garage
is that even in the most "punk"concerts you can see 14year olds,
generally you feel like you are in a highschool.I have seen mothers
coming in concerts and accompanying their children(not the kind of
mother that listen to alternative...i do not wanna be called racist!)
In garage concerts we are not so many people but there are not any
young kids being there just because it is fashion(Thanks God It is
NOT!!)

Yes it was 36 children. You should know that in rural north Mississippi there
ain't much to do except drink, play geetar, fornicate, and, if inclined, write

Hey, I liked that silly song when I was a kid. Still remember some of it,
too...

"Back when my hair was short, I was so wise on sports
four-pointed shoes and pink pants
Drank till my eyes were red, hid playboy 'neath my bed
Slicked my DA for the dance..."

The four-pointed shoes part is probably a misheard lyric, since I've never
heard of four-pointed shoes... but that's close. Cute bubblegummy pop tune
right up there with "The Night Chicago Died." Heh. Fire away.

I was under the impression that "Greek" meant like frat-rock.

Kirk... you weren't looking hard enough. I just picked it up today at
Vintage Vinyl on Delmar, and yes, it's on Virgin Canada. Not as good as
Gross Misconduct, though...

Which one did you find, Tim? The first one's got "Some Things Never
Change"/"I Need Somebody", while the second is a 3-songer with "I Wanna
Come Back...," "Nothin'," and another one (sorry, they're downstairs.)

> any other info on these cats?
Rochester band, mid-80s. Incredible shows... While up in the "Lilac City"
for college (U of R, class of '87), I saw them play 3-set shows on a
regular basis. The Chesterfield Kings may have ruled the roost, but these
guys were street-level wildmen. They also have a track on the Jargon
Records' comp, "Bone in Rochester," plus some live stuff is on a Live At
Jazzberry's cassette (split tape with The Fadeaways, who were decent, but
nowhere near as good as The Projectiles.) The live tape includes a great
version of "I Saw Her In A Mustang" and "Stacy," as well.
They supposedly recorded a whole LP, but I don't think it ever saw
release. Tune in to alt.music.banana-truffle and ask the band's drummer,
Brian Goodman about that one.
The Projectiles did make it to NYC twice (after I gave a tape of their
stuff to Endsville Entertainment's Gary "Teenager" Balaban, now known as
Tony Scopitone). By then, their original organist, Tony Pilato, was living
in Lodi, NJ, but he did play some songs with them those nights.

> what they're doin' now, etc...?
Brian moved to Albany and played with 1313 Mockingbird Lane for awhile. I
think he also may be a part of Susan & the Surftones, but I'm not positive.
Dan Franke (lead singer) is in The Riviera Playboys, who have a really
cool CD out on Jargon, the label run by latter-day Projectile Dave Anderson
(who also ran Saxon Recording Studios, where the Absolute Grey did their
stuff). Dave's also in the Riviera Playboys. Don't know 'bout the rest of
the Projectiles, tho'.

>oh, by the way...i've got "the talismen" ep &7'' where are
>they these days?
You're right, the Talismen stuff is also fantastic. In fact, Chaos (the
label that put 'em out) label head Tom Bessoir may have some more live
stuff from that show at the Bad Music Seminar in '88. Hope he releases it.
Jon Chalmers & Doug Del Femine (guitarists of The Talismen) play in The
Church Keys these days (45 on Norton). They also did time in the Gnats
(who have a song on The Invasion of the Insectoids comp on GI Productions).
Lead singer Rick Chalmers seems to shuttle between Maine (Talismen home
stomping grounds) and NYC... the only performing I've seen him do in the
last year or so is the occasional Talismen reunions.

Helluva great group.

	Blair

My wife calls Marilyn Manson 'Bubble-Goth'.

A girl I work with told me that she would never listen to M.M. again.
She heard that he had had his lower ribs removed to make it easier to
suck his own dick! I told her to listen to Alice Cooper instead and
she said she didn't like "Oldies".

I've never heard any of todays hit makers. I always thought that being
number 1 was not an indication of how 'popular' a song is but meaning
that it irritated the least amount of people. I don't know if I've
heard Milli Vanilli, never mind Hanson or the Spice Girls.

Proudly avoiding the mainstream,
Kip
