Hey!

Somebody should really make up one of those band family trees for Canadian
garage bands of the 80's and 90's, eh?! Anybody up for the task?

Haven't heard Mants in Your Pants, but the Mants double 7" (The MANT
From U.N.C.L.E.) on Lance Rock is well-worth any trade you can get.
Great lo-fi fuzz/garage punk a la The Mummies or any other
R&B-influenced stuff.

Hello BOMP!ers. There was no show this past Saturday morning.
Hence, no playlist. The transmitter at 'MFO died at around noon
Friday and wasn't raised 'til 2pm Saturday afternoon. Of course no
one told me of the situation, so as usual I woke up at 4am and got to
the studio at 5 only to find the bad news taped to the sound board.
It's just as well I showed up as I found out that we once again
have to sign up for our slots for the spring semester. Being in an
empty quiet studio, I took the time to fill out my airtime request
which had to be submitted by Tuesday (1/27) 6pm and took a peek at
some of the other airtime requests. I found that the need for support
is a little more urgent this time around.
I humbly request the support of those who are friends of the show,
whether they listen to the live broadcast each Saturday or those who read
my playlists and offer comments and praise and ultimately make the
show what it is.

North America is the only place in the world where CD retail prices are as
low as they are (US $16, roughly equivalent to 10 pounds UK). Compact
discs are much more expensive in the rest of the world - about the same
everywhere else as in the UK.

I can't say how things work in Britain, but in the USA, CDs of older
titles aren't significantly cheaper than full-price new releases. The
latest Garth Brooks, Spice Girls or Puff Daddy will cost anywhere from US
$12-16 (remember that the big commercial retail chains like Tower always
have sales, especially when they're red-hot newly-released titles), while
a Stooges, Ramones, or old Stones disc will probably be in the US $10-12
range. So buying oldies over the newest hits doesn't produce the same
kind of savings in the USA that Sean describes in Britain.

> It's a case of financial prudence dictating one's taste, really.

All that I've pointed out notwithstanding, yes. I think one big reason
why most people aren't more adventurous in what music they listen to is
because CD's are not cheap, most people are not rich, and they can only
afford to spend their hard-earned money on what's tried and true for them.
I sure as hell would not mind exposing myself to more music and more
artists from more genres, like jazz, old country and western, African
drumming, avant-garde experimental, and other stuff. For the most part I
stick to the same old indie rock and punk that I know I like, and I still
end up spending way too much money.

I don't have time to read all the bomp digests from this weekend, but
when I was a kid in the early-mid 80s, I listened primarily to teenage
bands who were under 25. This was when classic rock recatapulted Eric
Clapton to fame with his jazzy easy listening tunes.

don't forget that the kind of people making early rock and roll were
essentially the underclass, whereas the kind of people populating the
charts today have some kind of financial or educational backing. I have
often thought that the people listening to punk rock, etc today would
more likely be folk or jazz collectors in the 50s and 60s. Where the
typical garage band would be some Pearl Jam-inspired suburban ne'er do
wells who spend too much time listening to top 40 radio.

Anyone care to comment on Paul Schaeffer's mid-60s band, the Fugitives
that played at some Thunder Bay hotel? I never actually heard from
anyone who knew the band existed at the time- in fact, often wondered if
it was a humorous creation on Paul's part (The Fugitives? come on...).

Here's a lesson for you (if you really want your kids to seek out better
music..though its not guaranteed to work): LEAVE THEM ALONE! All I'm
saying is that if my parents had tried to tell me what "rocked" and what
didn't, I'd sure as hell go in the absolutely different direction. Ya
see, most youths do not think their parents understand them and most do
not think that their parents have any taste in music or fashion,
etc....so the more you rant about what you perceive as good, the less
apt they'll be to like it, because, if you're over 21 well you're
square, man...ya dig?

Leave 'em be...if they want it, they'll find it.

Once in a while I still hear Pushin' too hard, Lies, and Liar, Liar on
the oldies radio. But who wants to sit through a butt-load of crap to
hear it. People who collect records and listen to alot of music don't
need commercial radio anyway.

Great to see inquiries about Peter. Maybe I can fill in some of the blanks on
questions posted. Peter left DMZ in May 1978. Shortly after the Sire LP was
released. From the time he and I first met (fall '75) and started the band,
he said "if I ever make a record, that's it, I'm goin back to school. I just
wanna make a record." Within that first year we got a couple tracks on the
Live at the Rat LP, and by spring '77 we cut the Bomp tracks. Initially,
neither of us had thoughts about us makin it or anything. We just wanted to
do a band. The Punk thing hadn't yet happened, and we were far removed from
commercial appeal of the times. But things were hot in 77. We then got signed
by Sire and Peter's goals were being realized. The album was released May 5th
'78 and Peter was gone back to Cincinatti (family home at that time). In
short time he started the Customs. Recorded some Hot tracks and made his mark
there. Within a couple years he was back in Boston and he and Mike Lewis
joined the Lyres for a short time. He was workin at a record store with a
friend, Barry White, whohe formed a new band with, Barrence Whitfield & the
Savages. Was probably in that band the longest. He was great in it. What a
band! This was mid-late 80's. He got married and again hit school.
Oceanography I think. When we did the reunion in 93 he was working for the
EPA or something. Looked great, played great and was incredibly great to do
the thing with him again.

This could make for a REAL interesting thread.

I can't think of a band that's hot with the "kids" (a distinction I
surpassed not long ago) that ROCKS, since I haven't heard much new popular
music, but I would love to hear what other people think.

Captain Kirk - who thinks the Squirrel Nut Zippers are AOK (not rock though,
big band/swing among other things - is it even big with the "kids"

well, since the conversation's swung to what the kids like today - i
happened to have just completed a big listenership survey of the college
station i dj at, and here (in brief) is what the kids are listening to, if
the kids are in college (actual question - what would you like to hear
mnore of on wcfm?):
folk, classic rock, jazz, alternative, and classical.
kid's top 5 bands:
phish, the beatles, ani difranco, rolling stones, dar williams
what kids want less of:
	rap, techno, alternative, metal, hip-hop
(also among "kid's" favorite bands - sinatra, bjork, pearl jam, samples,
and - yes - squirrel nut zippers).
so the kids listen to the rolling stones, and maybe they rock. maybe the
beatles rock. but i'm willing to bet they listen to the latter era of
both bands. kids are dumb like that.
