Any chance of another DMZ reunion? I had such a GREAT time at the last
one! It'd be even better if it could be a full weekend this time, with
one show in NYC.

Has anyone yet picked up the new Canadian CD comp of 28 trax on Stomp label?

Hi Blair,
Our original reunion plan was to do at least two shows,Boston/NYC. Perhaps a few
more. An idea was considered to do this with the Real Kids. It's easy, and true
enough, to say that logistics were the biggest obsticle. But as things were, it
was monumental enough getting the 5 of us in the same room to rehearse for
Boston. Again? Never say never, but doubtful. At the time, Peter and I discussed
doing the reunion over many calls. It wasn't the first time the idea had come up.
This time it was the idea of a rather zealous fan/friend who booked it and then
tried to get us to do it, or something like that. It was great to rehearse (we
actually did, twice!) and pretty funny to pull it off. But that was just some
aspects of it. About a week after the show, Peter told me, little or no chance at
another. Not a surprise. But stranger things have happened.
Ya never know. - JJ

In principle, this makes sense. Now, I don't have any kids, but I imagine
that may happen someday. However, I do have one question:

According to that same argument, won't kids also rebel against what they
hear their parents listening to? If the answer to that is "Yes," then it
sounds like the only hope I have of having kids with cool taste in music
is to deny myself the pleasure of music whenever they're around. Quite
honestly, I'd rather have kids with lousy musical taste.

I've found that playing stuff I like for my students has varying effects,
depending on the individual. Some are completely into tons of stuff I've
played for them; others think it's complete crap. That's OK, 'cuz I think
most of what they like is also crap. I expect that from *every*
generation. Most people I grew up with listen to junk, too.

Someone who's not on the list (<CryptRec@concentric.net>, to be precise)
tried to post an e-mail listing of records available by auction and the
message bounced. In this case, it was probably just as well since the
message was over 40k in size -- enough to trigger a digest all by itself.

If anyone is interested in looking at this message, you can send me a
*private* e-mail and I'll forward it to you. Be prepared to receive a big
ol' e-mail, as mentioned above. Also, the formatting is a little screwed
up so it's not the easiest thing to read.

Categories of records available include:

>70s PUNK/80s & 90s GARAGE/ETC
>ROCKABILLY: 7" SINGLES
>BLACK ROCKERS/R&B/BLUES/GROUPS: 7" SINGLES
>INSTRUMENTAL R&R/SURF INSTROS: 7" SINGLES (& a few LPs)
>60s GARAGE FRAT ROCKERS: 7" SINGLES
>60s GARAGE PUNK: 7" SINGLES (& a few LPs)
>UK/EURO BEAT/R&B: 7" SINGLES

Again, send me an e-mail if you want a copy of the list. I'm not connected
with this in any way... just acting as a conduit for those who are
interested. Complete contact info, etc., is in the original message.

Two suggestions for anyone like you: Buy vinyl! Used record stores have
amazing stuff in the dollar bins, and garage sales can be even better.
We're still seeing the effects of people finally giving up their turntables
in favor of CD players, which means more old rare vinyl for us at dirt
cheap prices! The other suggestion is tape trading. If you get a sampler
of the kind of stuff you MIGHT be interested, and some of it rocks, you can
look for that stuff and save your money elsewhere... Course, YOU knew all
this, but....

This is correct though I would modify the statement slightly to encompass
Word macro viruses, which aren't 'run' in the sense that you run a program.
However, the same principle applies -- a virus cannot be transmitted
through simple e-mail, only through an attached file which itself must be
executed or opened.

I was just about to post a message about this when I received John's. The
"join the crew" warning is documented as a hoax at
<http://www.ciac.org/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html#joincrew>. This site is
generally a good place to check if you receive a virus warning; most of
them are fake.

I don't think that's un-NPR... actually it was probably the DJ/board op
at the local affiliate that played it, to fill in time between NPR
(National Public Radio) segments. Btw, speaking of NPR... I've got a
tape containing the All Things Considered episode from 11-29-95
featuring Rick Carr interviewing Ed Shaw of The Monks (including
portions of some of their songs). Very cool. I love NPR...

I haven't heard it, but they've had a third album in the can since last
fall or so and it's supposedly their best yet. Unfortunately, their
record company won't let them release it until they've wrung the current
album dry, which means that by the time it is released they'll be
considered a novelty act by the large panted folk we've been lambasting
for the past week or so, and the LP will probably go nowhere. I hope I'm
wrong.

Subject: How I Got Into The Garage

I first got into garage-rock by receiving a BOMP catalog in the mail circa
1981. I looked at the pictures of the Pebbles albums, (not to mention the
DK's Fresh Fruit), and thought that since I liked the Beatles, Kinks, Stones
and Who and liked that 60's style stuff -- here was some more cool sounds to
discover. About two years later, (still in high school), I saw a copy of
Pebbles Three in Sam Goody's, (of all places), and persuaded my friend to pick
it up because I didn't have the bucks. We were already getting into reading
the (red and blue) Rolling Stone Record Guides and discovering new stuff like
Love and Pet Sounds but that Pebbles LP, (I taped it that day), really did it
for me. Then it was trips into NYC for other Pebbles, Rhino's Nuggets,
Graves, Garage Punk Unknowns and searching the used racks at a store a few
doors down from the high school for Blues Magoos, Electric Prunes, old Zappa,
VU, etceteras and so forth, blah blah blah...

Who else wants to share their experiences?

   >>
The Fugitives why not?? There were hundreds of bands in the mid 60's called
the Fugitives. The Fugitives in the Detroit area turned into SRC.
  >>
There was a segment a few years back on the Letterman show where Paul
actually showed photos of his past groups. Unfortunately, it was simply to
laugh at the early fashions and his old hairstyles. (The guy actually had long
hair!) I remember at least 2 of the groups looking pretty hip circa 66/67.
So, who knows, Paul could've had a hip moment in his life.
Freddy is right about the Fugitives, San Diego had 2 with that name
as well, and neither one put anything out. I think the Fugitives is right up
there with the Outcasts as far as overused names. Tony

Is this in addition to the 2xCD Beyond And Back X Anthology that just
came out on Elektra?

ready to go and I'm getting ready to put Vol. 3 together. Lemme know
if your interested.

Yes. There was a bonus 45 added to the first hundred or so. The songs
are 'The Red Monkey' and 'Creeper'. There was talk of the mants doing
a couple more 45's for Lance Rock. These would also have some sort of
bonus 45 but I don't know much more than that.

I do have an extra copy of the double 7" if you're interested in
trading something.

Subject: Re: NPR (was: Re: Why Link)

I'll bet it was NPR playing Link's "Rumble". I've heard many similar songs
used as filler in Arizona and Washington state. A good friend of mine
interned at NPR. It is run by very cool people, but also full of its own
heavy internal politics. In many years of listening to NPR, I have heard
countless stories on good 60s music and culture, including one on the song
"Louie, Louie, a story on The Remains (Boston). Good old pinko NPR is closer
than any other mainstream media to the cutting edge of cool. Listen for a
while, and it becomes obvious that there are record collectors and pop culture
junkies working there.

For a real treat, listen to the interview program "Fresh Aire" if your NPR
station carries it. It features long, in depth interviews with well known and
not so well known musicians, comedians, authors and playwrights, etc. An
archive edition played recently after Sonny Bono's death; Sonny telling of his
Phil Spector stories was priceless! It was also the first time I heard Sonny
admit that Cher was responsible for the song "Ringo, I Love You", under the
nome de chanson "Bobbie Joe Mason"

NPR Rules!
