I don't have the paper in front of me, but I believe it's Thursday and
Friday of this week. Coney Island High, I think.

If I'd seen the Demolition Doll Rods playin' with Guitar Wolf and The
Cramps I'd wrote the same things you did.

Say it ain't so!! I swear, torturing an advertising executive should be

Does anyone know why (besides the money) Iggy decided to suck a big
dick and let Nike use "Search And Destroy"? Was it his decision,or does
someone else own the rights to that material? (I'm really hoping it's the
latter)

I know, a song's never quite the same once it's been mauled in this manner. For
a long time, whenever I heard 'Smokestack Lightning', I couldn't help but think
of the black guy sat on a frieght train drinking Budweiser. Likewise 'I heard
it though the grapevine' always invokes images of Nik Kamen removing his demins
in the lauderette.

Just think, a whole generation to which Iggy invokes Nike, and Personality
Crisis...Citroens. Hell, maybe in a couple of years time somebody'll put out a
punk adverts complilation CD and lower the tone even more.

Sean (who wonders whether you get these Ads in the States - the one's that sell
'Americana').

Poor Andrea Rota! His taste is being disparaged so cruelly, but, yeah,
I've not seen the DDRs but always heard they stink and, "so they're almost
naked, so what". How the hell did they get to play Italy??
Unfortunately, Detroit seems to have a pretty hefty subculture of icky
Appearance bands with black-ringed eyes & long skaggly hair and all the
rest of the post-Alice Cooper shtick, and somehow none of them seem to be
much to listen to - though I can only report by hearsay...
my club evenings are too scarce these days to waste them on checking out
some pitiful-looking bunch of scrawny crossdressers called "Oversexxxt" or
something.
Detroit (or DEE-troit)'s still a metal town, I reckon.

That's not the most heinous instance of clueless ad execs trying to link
punk rock cred with TV commercials for cars. I wonder if Eric or anybody
else on this list remembers that Subaru ad a few years back which had a
prototypical Gen-X slacker saying that his car was "like punk rock!"

Mercifully, I've never actually seen that commercial. I just heard and
read about it and that alone was more than my digestion could handle.

That particular ad, by the way, came out right around '92 or so, right
after Nirvana's NEVERMIND had broken punk/indie/alternative into the
mainstream and the entertainment, media and culture industry execs were
starting to catch on to what a marketable commodity "punk rock" could be.
I'd be curious to know when the Nike and Citroen ads using Iggy and the
Dolls came out in relation to that period.
