I think the same as most of you after having seen the doll rods opening the
Cramps, I thought it was ok for the first 2-3 songs but after a while it got
boring, especially since when I saw them in Montreal, they were playing
after guitar wolf (I dunno if it was the case for the rest of you) and it
was kind of tough to even come close to the energy displayed by the
Wolf...Also I remember somebody saying that he (she) thought the drummer
looked like she was gonna overdose on stage, I thought exactly the same (she
had werid eyes that kept staring in strange places) only to learn in an
article I saw later that she was "legally" blind (I dunno what legally blind
means, but if she's blind it makes sense now...), the article also said
she's the mother of two! Oh well whaddya know...

On another note, I just saw a review of a band called Nashville Pussy, which
is described as raunchy rock'n'roll with lotsa fuzz. Anybody heard about
them? any good? the album cover is absolutely, rmm...raunchy (hint: the
album is called let "them eat pussy").

I have no problem with rock stars cashing in, and don't expect 'em to do
anything else - hell, it's their songs. And historically, Iggy Pop has hardly
demonstrated Sting-like concern for the world at large. It's just plain bizarre
that a nihilistic racket like 'Search and Destroy' can be used to sell Nike.

Ah, now I think that's overstating the ad men's concern for good music. I mean
these guys are just paid to do a job - shift units; and if they think playing
Iggy over images of some guy running around in Nike will do the job, they'll do
it. They could chose Iggy 'cos it's plain, great sounding rock'n'roll, or maybe
'cos it'll create associations of 'cool' with the product, but otherwise I don't
think anybody give's two hoots.

Sean.

Hey!

Last night, NPR's business show used Elvis Costello's 'Pump It Up' as
tag music.

Which reminds me, WDEF, Chattanooga's beautiful music station, used to
keep EC's 'What's So Funny About Peace Love And Understanding' in
regular rotation.

Did anybody see Iggy on 'Pete And Pete'? The funniest was when he
called one of the neighborhood kids a stooge. He also sang a song with
Luscious Jackson.

Off the top of my head I can only tell you that BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE
DOLLS and FASTER PUSSYCAT KILL KILL were directed by Russ Meyer (Beyond the
Valley of the Dolls was co-written by Roger Ebert (!))

You can order the films from Russ himself (the URL eludes me at this time,
just run a search on "Russ Meyer"), but the most of the films will run
upwards of $60-$80! I have seen BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS in US stores
for around $20 dollars though.

For the other movies I would check out the internet movie database:

www.imdb.com

It'll give you info on who directed it, who starred in it, where you can
find a copy, among a zillion other things.

Some of those movies might be long out of print, or not priced to sell and
be quite expensive. I do recommend mail order rentals if you want to see
some flicks you might otherwise not have a chance too. Try:

Right!
Turning down a commercial is something that only weenies like Sting and Billy
Joel do.

Does anyone have any airchecks from Dave Diamond's Diamond Mine?

I just found out that the prime time for his DJ style (as featured on
the Pebbles lp) is 1966 at KBLA and that he continued to do the Diamond
Mine at KFWB (1966-67?) and KFRC (Late 60s/70s) but that KFRC kept him
under a tighter rein and he didn't do the whole peanut butter angel of

anyone have these tapes they'd want ot trade for, I dunno, Radio
Caroline tapes I have or some KHJ airchecks...

I think you're missing the point. What would be wrong with "better
music" finding it's way into some "kids" lives via some AIRPLAY? Of the
ENTIRE,original song, presented the way it was INTENDED by the creators,wi=
th
it's original meaning intact,as opposed to being perverted and trunctuate=

being sent when Nike uses "Search And Destroy" along with some footage o=

their products? Something like "IT's survival of the fittest, and you'll b=

The reason a radio statiom WON'T Play "Search And Destroy" on the

BUSH,which means they can't charge as much for their advertising time, whi=

means corporations like NIKE won't pay to sell their shoes by playing 15
seconds of "Search And Destroy" in their ads. Do you get the Idea that
"Better music" for the kids just doesn't feature too prominently in this
little scenario?

Also,I don't think you understand the extent to which modern life, and
society is being controlled by the agenda of big corporations, rather than
the needs of society. I don't think better music IS being presented to th=
e
kids via commercials.I think more effective ADVERTISING is being inflicte=

on the kids, and whether that does them any good at all is something I
doubt.

Yeah,it would be "nice",but that's the point. It seems like Iggy just
completetly sold out his ethics in this case.I havenb't heard him speak o=
n
the subject of this ad directly, but it would seem obvious by everything
he's said and stood for over the years that he "should" have a problem wi=

like his music, more than a few people have accused Iggy of not having a l=

I seriously doubt NIKE used "Search And Destroy" as a public service
gesture. They did it because their research told them it would give them a
"cutting edge" image, which would help them sell more shoes. And shouldn't
Pepsi commercials feature only the Spice Girls? Thinking that TV
advertising with "quality music" is some sort of advancement,is like
thinking that scud missiles would be improved If they landed on you with =

Wow! I was just so completely rocked by 2 great songs that I
had to write in and ask/tell you about them.

One was (I think) Aminha Minina by Los Mutantes (from Brazil I think,
pardon my spelling), which had bouncy kinda Bo Diddley drumming, a
clear acoustic guitar in the foreground and another buzzing guitar in
the background. The DJ (FMUs Tom Sharpling) said there's a new
reissue CD, so my question is, is the rest of the LP as great as this
song? Is there more than one release currently available, and which
do you recommend?

The other was a snotty punk song (in contrast to the Mutantes
party-type tune) called Secret Police by the Belfast Gypsies. I hit
the rewind button at least a dozen times on this one! Do they have a
full-length or are they only on comps?

I'd hate to be in Boston this weekend -- how do you choose between
the Upper Crust on one floor and the Woggles/Swinging Neckbreakers
show on another floor of the same club!? Glad I don't have to
decide on that!

Woggles & Insomniacs & Plungers tomorrow (in the same club!)
WHEEEEEE !! Can't wait to boogaloooooooo!

I've only heard one song by the Hydes so far, an excellent cover of
The Only One's "Flaming Toch". It was part of the CD that comes with the
greek zine "The Thing". The Hydes who are from Katerini (a small
city to the north of the country, close to Thessaloniki)also do a cover of
a Pretty Things' song (which one?) in the "Not So Pretty"(a tribute to the
Pretty Things) compilation (Corduroy Records). Their 7" should be well
worth looking for.

Legally blind means, in very simple terms, about 10% vision or less (or a
very limited field). Yes, Margaret's look makes a lot of sense. In the
words of the Hamilton Streetcar's "Invisible People", I know....I've tried it!

I was at the Toronto gig of DDR opening for Guitar Wolf and the Cramps.
I'm all for hearing about live shows and how boring or great they were, but
even if the Doll Rods weren't as wyld as the Gories or Guitar Wolf or the
Cramps (who play "Psychotic Reaction" waaaay to slooow), I dunno if they
deserve the slaggin' they seem to be gettin' the past few days on this
list. Can we perhaps hear about other bands?

Respectfully,

Rocky. .

Did anyone else notice that the Taco Bell spot with Link's "Jack The Ripper"
has a new guitar part dubbed on top?

What sorta bonehead listened to the tune and decided that it wasn't good
enough as is???

Get your tix in advance no matter what the event--a Middle East experience
can be a painful thing without tix--unless standing out in the cold is your
bagg. Not that they are particularly bad, in fact Middle East has a nice
vibe. The problem is that NO Boston clubs treats patrons very well in my
estimation.......See the Boston Herald on Feb 4. In the Arts Section Al
Kooper, now a Boston guy, talks of how he went to see the James Taylor
Quartet there and felt so abused he left (but he DID say that the JTQ was
awesome--as though there was any doubt!) Jimmy Botticelli

I'm looking for a rare album by Vince Taylor which features Link Wray on
guitar. The album is titled "The Original 1973 Legendary Sessions"
and it was apparently issued by the Vince Taylor Fan Club in 1993.

If anyone has more information on this CD, please let me know!

Thanks,

Scott

If you want to sell one of those Farfisas, I'm looking for a beater to use to
fix up our good Farfisa. Which is not so good anymore. Or if anybody has a
Farfisa that has seen better days that they want to sell cheap, It is for a
good cause, without it we only have Vox or Wurlitzer to choose from!!
