We did have some singing, dancing raisins from Arizona a while back (they kind
of sounded like the Smurfs). They didn't sing 'I heard it through...',
however - that would be too much.

Sean.

The Fuck em tape was available from ROIR. It might even be on CD. The 7"
of I Am Right/Loyola is on vinyl. Noron Records carries it. They might
even have access to the Fuck Em tape. I know that Norton Records is on
line. Andy from the Dictators is on-line, but I don't know his e-mail
address. There is another 7' that just came out with Who Will Save Rock
and Roll on it.

The same sort that decided The Kinks weren't good enough at their own song
midway thru an ad campaign. (Some may recall a commercial a year or so
back where The Kinks original played for awhile in the ad, but then it was
inexplicably replaced by some made-for-the-commercial version.)

If you came to our place around the time of our next move, my girlfriend
would probably wait till I'd gone out the door and then shuffle one of
my broken Combo Compacts out the back. She just can't understand why I
don't either (a) get 'em fixed or (b) get rid of them.

Ha, now there's one I forgot about - over here we had a Michalin commercial
(they make car tyre and other RUBBER products), with 'Venus in Furs' as
background. Think about it...

The drummer for the Doll Rods is legally blind (so I heard) which is why she
always looks so spaced out, allegedly. I'm not too crazy about them either,
and I was surprised that they would do such a plodding set while playing with
the Cramps and Guitar Wolf (they're usually faster and screechier). My
boyfriend (who's from the Detroit area) thinks they may have been inspired by
a band called Destroy All Monsters, whom I never heard.

ENTIRE,original song, presented the way it was INTENDED by the creators, with
it's original meaning intact,as opposed to being perverted and trunctuated
to serve the needs of a corporate sales drive?? What is the message that is
being sent when Nike uses "Search And Destroy" along with some footage of
their products? Something like "IT's survival of the fittest, and >you'll be
left behind unless you have our product"??

and

>I don't think better music IS being presented to the kids via
commercials.I think more effective ADVERTISING is being inflicted
on the kids, and whether that does them any good at all is something >I doubt.

I doubt anybody here would argue that we'd rather hear the music on the
radio. Given the state of commercial radio today, that's virtually
impossible. So I would argue that virtually any airing of 'better' music,
even on a commercial, is okay. (I'm not going to get into a discussion of
individual artist's hypocracy or morals because it depends on the artist,
etc. It is weird to hear songs associated with rebellion on tv ads, but
then again it can be kind of weird hearing the same song being back
announced by a dj!)

It's certainly not optimal, but exposure is exposure, even if the
corporation only has $$ in mind. Hey, at least they recognize that the
music is cool (or that people will think its cool). Even if they don't care
about the songs themselves, that's still getting cool music to the people.
I think it's okay because while some people might be sitting out there
thinking, cool shoes, think I'll buy them, others might say 'cool tune,
think I'll find it,' and eventually end up at the same shows we go to...

I was amazed today while watching tv to hear "Hombre Secreto" (Secret Agent
Man) by the Plugz(?) from Repo Man being used for a black and white Miller
commercial. At first I thought it was just my hangover getting funky on me.
:) I know that if I didn't already know the tune, I would be searching it
out.

>I seriously doubt NIKE used "Search And Destroy" as a public service
gesture. They did it because their research told them it would give them a
"cutting edge" image, which would help them sell more shoes. And shouldn't
Pepsi commercials feature only the Spice Girls? Thinking that TV
advertising with "quality music" is some sort of advancement,is like
thinking that scud missiles would be improved If they landed on you with a
quote from Shakespeare >written on the side.

But what if the songs use in the commercial leads to airplay, increased
interest in the artist, and maybe even a hit? (As has happened in the U.K.
with The Clash.) Who knows some kid could hear "Search and Destroy" on a tv
commercial and consequently seek out Iggy's stuff and maybe even embrace
the songs original intent or meaning even if Iggy has abandoned it and the
shoe company doesn't give a shit.

Besides, after a SCUD missile hits you (assuming they've improved the
accuracy) :) you can't seek out more Shakespeare. At least it's possible to
walk away from a commercial thinking, "cool music." (As I have with
Timberland's use of Howlin Wolf and some watch company's (?) use of some
great old standards.) I know it's settling, but I've given up on commercial
radio and MTV (alright, I gave up on that a long long time ago, but it did
introduce me to Fishbone, the Violent Femmes, and IRS' the Cutting Edge).

Strange but true: I know the guy who drives the car in the "Da Da Da" car
ad. We used to teach for the same company, and then he moved west to become
an actor....

                      RE>>The Donnas 2/5/98

the donnas truly embody what rock & roll is about. all girls, all 18 years old, and 2
amazing rock & roll albums already under their belt.

their first album, currently unavailable but soon to be reissued on lookout, is one of
the greatest albums i've ever heard. if you dig the ramones, shangri la's (or any
other 60s girl groups), and fun songs then this is THE record to get. there is so much
energy on this record it practically leaps off your turntable! (favorite lyric: "i'm
gonna make him mine tonight, i'm gonna get in his pants tonight and i'm gonna make it
right.") AND just so there is some slight surf connection, the only cover on the lp is
a totally kick ass version of the beach boys' "drive in."

their second album just came out last week and sounds totally different but is also
great--think runaways. much more produced, but not in a bad way.

it's bands like this that make me realize all over again what great, dangerous rock &
roll is all about--the donnas could wipe the floor w/ all of the shit bands on mtv and
so-called alternative radio... and they're younger than any of em!

they're on tour right now and i'm totally psyched to see them here in austin in a couple
of weeks--heck even my girlfriend is excited to see them! rock & roll, baby!
