Subject: garage radio on the net

Got my computer about a month ago...I've been reading and enjoying the bomp
posts for several weeks now--thanks to Karl for turning me on to its
existence.

Thought I'd start out with the 'big plug' that KDVS Radio in Davis, CA is also
now on the net & one can listen with the realaudio setup beginning at:
www.kdvs.org. "Kicksville 29BC" is the show I've done (under a few different
show titles) for several years now. It's 60s punk, psych, new garage/punk,
surf/instro, some early rockn'roll, and other similar music (in that order).
Favorites include Jimmy Bryant, Davie Allan, Standells, Childish,
Nightcrawlers, Deviants, the Sect, stuff like CA Quintet/ Neighb'rhood
Childr'n/Yankee Dollar/Growing Concern, all that comp stuff like
Nuggets/Boulders/Pebbles/Rubble(s)/ BFTG's/ etc. Show's on Sundays 10pm-
midnight. Hope you hear it sometime!

A different show, the surf/instro hour (alternating with the psych hour) is on
Tuesdays 11-midnight. It's mostly current surf & instrumental along with some
of the classic early 60s sound.

For the curious, Davis is a quiet college town of 50,000 in central CA, 9
miles west of Sacramento and 75 miles northeast of San Francisco. Currently
I'd say the Davis local music scene is pretty lousy, most good shows are in
SF, sometimes Sacto. That's the extend of my "Davis pride." Hmm... wait, the
Oxford Circle were from Davis, so I guess I've got some pride!

I must concur that Q ruled at the Great American! I can't recall having been
that inspired and amazed by a reunion gig!! I had a strange overhead view due
to the 2nd story overhang there. Does anyone know more about the 3rd to last
song they played--I think it was called "Ain't it a Shame" and Q said it was
from 69 (?) if memory serves(??) What about the rumor that they had a third
album's worth of material recorded for Tangerine records--Is this true?--Any
confirmations or misinformations? Regardless, It's great to know they still
have 'it'!

I'd be into trading tapes with anyone interested. Looking mainly for US
garage punk/pysch, "lost Pebbles", etc. I'd also be into trading my showtapes
for your show tapes (for you other DJs out here.)

Also hoping to hook up with cool bands touring the area to set up live
performances on the air here. If you're coming through, e-mail me, I'd love
to set something up.

Subject: recent comps

I was debating picking up a bunch of the Psychedelic Unknowns comps,
specifically 3,4,5,6 but didn't know what everyone's opinion on them
was. The band listings include some pretty common names, are these the
same tracks or do they pretty much not duplicate the pebbles and other
older series?

another item form the bomp catalog was "New York Girl Garage Groups" has
anyone heard this? what is it, modern bands? older? who's on it?

lastly, I picked up Prae-Kraut Pandemonium 5+6 and they were ok, not
stunning, certainly not expected to hit the $150 range like the first
two. has anyone heard Volumes 7+8? any opinions?

anyone know if the CD issue of Swing for a Crime includes extra tracks
(now that crime jazz is so darn popular?)

feel free to email privately

thanks,

Don

Alright! Interesting Mutantes thread, you guys! It's great to hear that David
Byrne is reissuing their albums......much needed since the import reissues
cost $25 and upwards around NYC! (Ouch!) Funny, too, cuz I was thinking
earlier today that he really should put them out......years ago he put out a
CD by Tom Ze, who was a member of Os Mutantes at one point, so that's probably
part of why he digs 'em!

Also, the Kurt Cobain "discovery" story may or may not be true, but I first
heard of Os Mutantes back in '88, when Pat Fear (White Flag) and that horrible
Tater Totz side project he had covered "Bat Macumba." Since then I've been
curious......I always wondered if he'd just found their record in some weird
record store somewhere and he and the Totz were literally the only ones who
knew about 'em.....not unlike similar experiences I've had regarding a certain
other Latin American psychedelic group.......(hey, you guys oughta know right
off the bat why I'm enjoying the Mutantes talk!!!!!!!!!)

Con amor.....

He sold shares in his rights, rather than selling the songs outright. You
can buy stock in what I guess is his publishing company. I've heard it's
been very profitable for him and his shareholders. You can take $x for
something, but if someone else then owns it, you'll never make another penny
from it, so why do it? (Other than in desperation, of course...)
