Subject: Re: ? in Austin!

The current drummer for the Mysterians, Robert Martinez, IS the original
drummer, actually (to contradict something in a previous post). It's just
that he was drafted ca. '65 and was not able to play on the records--Eddie
Serrato (sp?) did. Imagining the irony of sitting in a Vietnamese jungle
dodging sniper fire while a tinny radio squawked with the sounds of
"96 Tears" over and over, I asked Robert what it was like to be in the war
while his former bandmates were riding the top of the charts. He replied
(to my relief) that he was "chasing frauleins" -- stationed in Germany.

Frank

P.S. It's my theory that Robert is Question Mark's brother, but I didn't
ask him at the time. They look somewhat alike, I think (of course, I
couldn't compare their eyes, as "Q" never takes his shades off!) Robert
also has ? symbols tattooed on both of his arms (one rightside-up, one
upside-down!)

Subject: Re: "Garage Punk Unknowns" box set

<snip>Garage Punk Unknowns", in the liner notes it states that this contains the
tracks from the original first seven volumes...does this mean everything? I've
got the original volume 4 and if I'm not mistaken the box set is missing some
of those tracks. And it would seem strange that they could get seven albums
worth of material on four albums. What is the deal?<snip>

I've wondered the same thing myself. Don't have an answer, but this might
interest others thinking of getting the box set: the vinyl set contains
everything on the first Garage Punks cd set. It contains all but about 5 cuts
from the second cd set. The vinyl contains about 11 cuts not on either cd set.
I was hoping for a little less duplication, but if you own the cds, you'll have
to decide how much you're willing to pay for the non-cd cuts. I paid $35.75 for
the vinyl set.

Does anyone out there have a copy of either "Frantic Desolation" by the
Sopwith Camel (off of the HELLO HELLO AGAIN LP) or "Johnny Was A Good Boy"
by the Mystery Trend? I'd be willing to trade copies for copies.

Subject: record info

>Anyone have any information on these 45's:

>1)Gregg Todd & The Jacks - Love Transcends/Garden of Delights
>2)1st National Band - The Trip Down/When Once It Was Good
>3)Fugi - Mary Don't Take Me On No Bad Trip/Mary - Trip Two.

1. Most likely from Tennessee, since it's on Holiday Inn (2202), the label
Sam Phillips started with the cash he got from RCA for Elvis' contract. .
My notes say this is a Country Joe song, but I'm unable to check that. Only
one release, and not very memorable in my book.
2. On Monument (1031), so probably also from Tennessee. "When Once" is
pretty great psych pop, and was recently comped on "Acid & Flowers".
3. From Philadelphia? "Mary" came out 9-69 and I consider it a soul record.
On Chess subsidiary Cadet (5652), for whom they did 3 more in 1970 which I
haven't heard.

Hope this helps

Greg
