I think I know the track you mean, but I can't remember who did it... Is
that the one that goes, "Ain't that... just like me / crackin' up over
you" or something like that? Did The Kaisers cover it?

Hmm... too bad Bill Luther's out in Minneapolis this week. He'd know for
sure.

Even more off the subject.....On the Fishin' Musician bit,The Plasmatics
were on once and even went hunting with "Gil".A great clip on it is when
the Plasmatics play in the lodge and Jon Candy sits and sips hot
chocolate or whatever, and The Plasmatics trash his cabin.

I emailed the guy from Fat Possum, the man known only as Amos H., and he
said that so far the only 45s in this series are from Elmo Williams,
T-Model Ford, and Frank Roach (who is also Red Foxx's first cousin). I've
only got Chapters One and Two, by Elmo Williams and T-Model respectively.
Chapter One's A Side is "Hoopin' and Hollerin'" which is impossibly loud
and rocks like a fucking landslide; the tune is doubly impressive
because it's just Elmo and his guitar and sounds as full as a big band.
The B side, "Gonna Leave", teams Elmo with Jelly Roll Kings drummer Sam
Carr and another guitarist. It's another scorcher but isn't as freaked
out as "Hoopin'." I've only listened to it once (got it yesterday) but it
sounded more '50's oriented, I think.
Chapter Two is T-Model Ford's "I'm Insane" which is off of the LP PEE WEE
GET MY GUN ( it's the one where he's "mad as hell" and keeps threatening
to kick evryone's ass) and is probably the song he'll always be identified
with, which is a shame, as it's kind of a novelty tune. The B side,
however, might be the best thing he's ever done. "Morning Gown" is the
usual T-Model line up: just T and his drummer, Spam. Unlike his usual
primordial distorted stomp, this song actually sounds fluid and
semi-soulful, which T-Model pulls off with unusual pizazz. I've seen him
live and he gave no evidence that he was in possession of such prowess.
It's great.
I haven't heard the Frank Roach yet, although Amos H. says that he was 88
when he recorded the tune and "is a cool old guy."
Also, Amos recently coaxed the great CeDell Davis into the studio and the
sessions are waiting to be mixed. Junior Kimbrough's got an album slated
for September of this year coming out on Fat Possum, of course. Othar
Turner, fife player extraordinaire, has a new CD out on Birdman and
T-Model Ford recorded recently with harp (?) player Willie Foster and
appears on his new album, which is out on Rooster Blues.

It's probably not much of a lead, but a song of that description was also
covered by the Kaisers on their 'Beat it Up!' lp - the song is credited to
Carrol/Guy.

Okay, here goes:

1) The "Just Like Me" song you are talking about is by George and Teddy
and the Condors, off their Reprise LP. It's at home, and I'm at work, but
I think it is titled "Sticks and Stones" (the song, not the lp). Is the
lp "Live at Ciro's"? It's one of those early 60s Reprise/WB live lps like
the one by the Premiers (I also have a great one by Tony, Vic, and Manuel,
"...A Go Go"). The video clip is awesome, it's one of those slighly
salacious Scopitones with lots of Vegas-y showgirls. George and Teddy are
the coolest, two black guys with big pompadours, the Condors are three
white guys who look like Frat band cats, with suits and greased hair. My
favorite part of the clip is where they have a guitar solo playing, but
they show the bass player pretending to do it! G & T and the C's also had
an lp on a local CA label (Freddy Fortune has it!) and at least one
45, I have a picture sleeve copy of one on Mercury (or Philips?, one of
those labels). This one was recorded by Leo De Gar Kulka of
Vejtables/E-Types/Mourning Reign, etc. etc. fame from S.F.

2) "Almost There" was done by the Turtles. It's on a 45 and (sorry to be
guessing again) one of their first couple lps. It's one of their most
punky, stompin' tunes. I can't check right now, but I would guess that
they recorded it first, and wrote it.

Hope this helps,
Frank

The first song is actually 'Ain't That Just Like Me'. Don't know who
originally recorded it; the only other '60s garage version I know of
was by the Australian Flies. 'Almost There' is an early Turtles song -
one of their punkiest along w/ 'Outside Chance'.

Subject: Johnny Kidd and the Pirates & Carrie

I am new to the Bomp list. can anyone tell me anything about Johnny Kidd and
the Pirates. Especially about re-issues.

Also, I did an interview with Guitar Wolf leader Seiji who mentioned that one
of his big influences was a Japanese band from the early 70's called Carrie.
Does anyone know anything about them.
Thanks,
Tim

I was told (but cannot confirm) that Alex was interviewed on Dateline
NBC about that group. They legally own the US trademark on the band
name, The Box Tops. Reportedly there was some hanger-on lawyer in the
music scene in the late 60s who trademarked many popular band names
sometime in the 1970s. he manages said "bands."

ps- thanks to all who wrote about the Music Emporium 45. I had seen the
lp advertised at $2000 a few years ago and got very puzzled when there
was little info about the 45. It turns out due to warehouse finds, that
Karl is correct, it's not a super-high-priced single and is considerably
more common than the lp. but that's what I was trying to determine and
what this list is good at.

Hmm... too bad Bill Luther's out in Minneapolis this week. He'd know for

The version that your talking about with the two black cats is George & Teddy
& The Condor Brothers. They were the house band at the Condor Club in Swingin'
San Francisco. When I was in California last fall I made it a point to find
their records and succeeded! Found their Reprise lp in LA. and their live at
the Condor club lp in San Fran, bought it from Roy Loney. They also have a 45
w/picture sleeve on Phillips, I love those guys! I doubt there version was
first, I also have an ace version of the song By Bobby Comstock & The Counts
on "Lawn" records, probably out of California but who the hell knows. Well
that doesn't answer the question but it is a start!!!

I recently came into contact with a guy named Bart who does a show in
New Jersey called Barrage From The Garage. From the description it
sounds like your typical Bomp-style garage show, similar in format to
The Wayback Machine, Coffee 'n' Smokes, Radio Rumpus Room, etc., but the
thing that really sets this show apart is that it's on COMMERCIAL RADIO
(on WHTG FM 106.3)! Yes, Saturday nights, even, too! And SIX hours long
(12-6am). Check out this guy's developing web site for more info:

Subject: Re: song research

1. The first song is "Ain't That Just Like Me." It was originally by the
Coasters, but two rival versions by the Searchers and Hollies came out in
the UK ca. 1963-64. I don't know who else might have done it, including the
duo you mentioned in your post.

2. "Almost There" was a track from the second Turtles LP in 1966, and was
the first song recorded by the group. Written by Flo & Eddie as a pretty
straightforward Kinks cop.

Hope this helps.

I just got the Downliners Sect "Be A Sect Maniac" cd from Norton and I
was a little disappointed that there were no liner notes included with
the disk. Can anyone shed a little light on this band for me (like a
short bio), and let me know when these tracks were recorded?

Thanks!
