As mentioned earlier, Searchers and Hollies recorded "Ain't That Just Like
Me".In the early 60's I was in a band called the Deserters back in Philly. Our
friendly 'rival' band was William Penn and the Quakers who did cut a 45 version
of it. Was the band you saw a clip of, U.S. or U.K.? I seem to recall a black
duo, Joe and Eddie, who did a pseudo live album with alotta popular teen hits
of the day. Think it was on Capitol or Liberty, still to early for detailed
recall.
All the best,
JJ

Brian Phillips and I were talking about this song on Thursday, as it turns
out. "Ain't that Just Like Me" was recorded first by the Coasters in 1961,
and was indeed covered by the Kaisers. The Searchers and Hollies also
recorded it.

Does anyone (preferably the source of the track listing) know if "She's
About A Mover" by the Sir Douglas Quintet will be the original 1965 version
(on Tribe) on the upcoming set?

I have "Texas Music Vol. 3" and the version on there is the 1969 version
from the "Mendocino" album, because Rhino couldn't get the rights. Is there
any chance there has been a change?

What Modern Lovers recordings are available? Is the 'Original Modern

Is there a Modern Lovers or Jonathan Richman website?

Greetings and thanks for the kind words! I just came back from another
shopping spree in NYC. Happy hours and record shopping are a dangerous
combo. I have no problem recording a show for anyone. Just let me know
if there is a past show you would like and I will gladly make a copy for
you. Hopefully we will be on the internet someday.

I'm looking forward to this week's show. A lot more British Beat
compilations and other gems that I found. Then after my show I'm heading
back to the city to catch R.L. Burnside and T-Model Ford.

Thanks again for your support,

Hello Bompers,

Today we were informed that Leighton Koizumi died of an overdose. For
those of you who don't recognize the name, Leighton was the lead singer of
Gravedigger5 and the Morlochs. During the mid-80's, Leighton's performances
were legendary. Whether it was GD5 or the Morlochs, Leighton would always
deliver the snottiest rants and perform the wyldest contorted moves on stage.
He was a key factor in what made San Diego such an amazing place to be in the
mid-80's.

This is purely anecdotal, but these prog-rock, 'Tolkein-reference' LP's seem to
be at a hell of a premium - I once went into a second hand shop where the walls
were plastered with the sleeves of these things, not one priced less than $1000.

In flipping through the March Discoveries I noticed an ad for some new
Collectables label garage comps called "Green Crystal Ties" vols 1-10 on CD.
Has anyone heard these yet? Are these CD's repackaging of stuff that's
already been available a few times over? My experience has been mixed with
Collectables product, so I was hoping someone could shed light on the subject.

Anyone got 2 grand for an original Keggs single (p23, same issue). Don't we

Paul Collins (& the Beat) has released the following records, all of them
worthwhile looking for:

- - Beat - Beat (a true classic!!)
- - Paul Collins' Beat - The Kids Are The Same
- - Beat - To Beat Or Not To Beat (mini-album)
- - Paul Collins' Beat - Long Time Gone (mini-album)
- - Paul Collins & the Beat - One Night
- - Paul Collins - Paul Collins
- - Paul Collins Band - From Town To Town
- - Paul Collins - Live In Spain (haven't seen this one yet)

Before the Beat Paul was in a band called the Nerves with Peter Case and
Jack Lee.
They released one EP with the following songs: 'Hanging On The Telephone'
(later covered by Blondie), 'When You Find Out', 'Give Me Some Time' and
'Working Too Hard'.
By the way, this EP has been covered in 1994 by Chopper, as well the songs
as the sleeve (see: http://members.aol.com/poppower/chopper/index.html).
Mote than 10 years ago in France a Nerves LP was released with all four
songs plus 6 other tunes.
In 1992 french label Revenge Records released a CD called 'That's Totally
Pop' with all ten songs of this Nerves LP, Jack Lee's solo album 'Greatest
Hits Vol 1' (with his most well-known tune 'Come Back And Stay'), three Jack
Lee bonus cuts and the Plimsouls 'Zero Hour' EP, a total of 29 tracks.

Yow! If they want Tolkein references, I got some books they might want
to look at.

The cover of this LP is a bad photocopy of the original.

I kinda figured (and hoped) that these jokers were a buncha punks that
grew up and got 'serious'.

Subject: Day The Surf Stood Still (RRR playlist of 2/20/98)

On Friday Radio Rumpus Room was proud to present its third annual "Day The
Surf Stood Still" mid-winter all-surf extravaganza. This year's theme:
"Anywhere But California." Yeah, we know... "How could you exclude the
cradle of surf music... home of Dick Dale, the Surfaris, the Belairs, and
all those contemporary bands?" Well, like Mike Hammer's private dick
answered, smoking .45 in hand in "I, The Jury": "It was easy." A much
harder task was winnowing down all the great non-Cali bands that lack of
time prevented us from including. Near as I can figure it we included only
one cover of a song originally performed by a California band (the Belair's
Mr. Moto), and got to include the Untamed Youth only because this cut
predated their boogaloo to the West Coast (and hey, fer chrissakes they had
the good taste to cover a North Dakota band, the Treasures.)

Following is the Radio Rumpus Room playlist for Friday, February 20, 1998.
(Radio Rumpus Room broadcasts Fridays at 9-10:30 p.m. on KFAI Fresh Air
Radio, FM 90.3/Minneapolis and 106.7/St. Paul.)

SAVVY SHOW STARTER (always locally recorded!)
Yetti-men -- High Himalayas [Minnetonka, MN] (Hipsville Vol.3: Return Of
The Frozen Few; Kramden)

"On the frozen shores of Lake Minnetonka, in the darkest hours of the
night, when the shriek of the snowmobiles has been hushed, the local
inhabitants say that if you listen long enough you can still hear the cry
of the fabled Yetti-men echoing off the surrounding hills, and over the icy
snowpack... Close your eyes and listen hard, and you too might hear..."
(spoken intro to this week's lead-off tune)

The Yetti-men recorded this haunting Astronauts-styled reverb spooker in
1964, in their Minnetonka high school auditorium. If it doesn't put a chill
through you, well then, sorry -- you're already dead.

Subject: Re: Ain't That Just Like Me

Hi,
I have the album here in my hands... It is George and Teddy and the
Condors "In Person From Ciro's Le Disc." Reprise RS-6135, circa 1965 (?).
There are 10 cuts, mostly covers of R&B novelty hits like "Rockin'
Robin'," "Bony Maroni," "Big Boy Pete," etc. I was confused, the cut on
the video clip IS "Just Like Me." "Sticks and Stones" is more of a
"What'd I Say" style number. The lp is fun, but a bit monotonous as the
material is all familiar, and similar. This was a definite lounge act.
The lineup is George and Teddy, goatee'd and pompadoured black guys with
darker colored suits, and the Condors, 4 white dudes with matching lighter
jackets and dark pants, and hair just like the Beach Boys ca. their "Shut
Down" lp.

From the cover:

Breakin' It Up...The Voices
That Create the Excitement
    GEORGE AND TEDDY

Plus the Band That Rocks
All Night Long...And Then Some
	THE CONDORS

In a Dance Fan's Dream Album...
Blasting Off...Live And
	IN PERSON

From the Discoteque That Makes Hollywood's
     Sunset Strip Come Alive
	CIRO'S LE DISC

The actual notes are a crack-up, they're too long for me to type, but
here are a couple samples...

"Like the woman who gets blown out of her kitchen half way across the
living room by some miracle sudser, G&T&C charge and charge hard, from the
first beat. Everything they do has rhythm. Wham-wham-wham all night
long. It's enough to make any Watusi-type wear out his shoes down to the
knees.

"Using Hand mikes they gyrate, stomp, and shout, hanging precariously
close over the edge of Ciro's stage. They never take their eyes off the
mass of humanity that's working out below them. Like master hypnotists,
in one way, they are in complete control of the dancers' momentum. But,
unlike hypnotists, G&T have no desire for their subjects to be lulled into
a deep coma; on the contrary, G&T keep on soul-shoutin', making the big
sound, forcing their dance-audience more awake than they've ever been
before."

I gotta admit, it sounds great! It's actually a fairly average set of
covers of uptempo R&B standards oriented to the lounge dance crowd,
though.

Frank (surprised that this discussion has lasted almost as long as the
Woggles vs. Can debate...)

Mickey Finn & the Blue Men was a fine band that released 3 very rare
singles in 1964. Kim Fowley told them he could get them a record deal in
the States, and they gave him the publishing. He later organized a release
on Chattahoochee, but if it was really released here, no one I know has
ever seen it. Mickey was lead guitarist, but they added Jimmy Page shortly
before the Kim Fowley session was recorded. He was also there in their next
incarnation, as The Mickey Finn, with two amazing singles. All these tracks
are available on various volumes of English Freakbeat.

Mickey Finn of T Rex is no connection, nor is the other artist of the same
name, who I believe was a non-rock pub singer of some kind, with numerous
releases.

Hope this helps

Sylvain,

Sorry you can't find it. I'm currently redesigning the site to make it more
navigable. However, on the Index page there is a button called "Mailorder"
and at the bottom of every page in the site is an image map that includes
links to the Index page, the Voxx page, the AIP page, and Mailorder. I
don't see how you could fail to find it. But if you want to go directly
there, the URL is http://www.bomp.com/bomp/Mailorder.html

Apologies for the confusion

Greg

My Bomp list emails have been comin in really weird clumps. I just got
Thursdays and saw this one from Frank. He's on the money with George and Teddy
and the Condors. That's exactly who I was thinkin of when I tossed out the Joe
& Eddie names as the possible "Ain't That Just Like Me" black duo version.
That's it, live at Ciro's on Reprise. I know it's not the original version but
probably the one in question. Thanx Frank for jarring the memory bank.

 Dave >>
Hey Dave, Rhino supposedly worked on getting the rights to all of the tracks
on that listing I posted. This did include the Tribe version of "She's about a
mover".

The drag is that Rhino has been so iffy on the entire project, I wouldn't
count on anything until I see the final product.
