Hmmmm.

Hmmm, what to say. Oh! The Woggles open for the Pie Tasters, a Virginia
ska band this Friday. What will the little rude boys and skinheads think
of The Perfessor and Co.?

Huh? Vacation? I went out to see a band last night, but I assure you I
was back home and checking on p-bomp by 10pm! (The band went on at 8!)

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to pass along the latest update from Alan at Bolis. I'm also
continuing to test the pseudo-Bomp list I mentioned last week, and I could
use a few more volunteers. E-mail me at efd@interport.com if you're
interested.

Here's Alan's update:

Yeah... (Insomniacs' drummer) Mike Sin stopped by on Saturday night. We
got to talking and I mentioned that date. He said that the Philly thing
couldn't give them any kind of guarantee and Lo-Fi Lee really wanted them
to do the Downtime gig that night and he *could* give them the money. Add
that to the geographical factor and it was an easy choice. Better for me,
too, since (a) they go on at 1 AM (meaning I can probably also hit the show
at Coney Island High... which may be early 'cuz it's a Lookout show) and
(b) The Insomniacs are doing 25 songs.

I dunno, but I'd love to see that tour come up here. I've got some
students who are very into the ska thing. (A couple of my 9th graders have
a ska-punk band and recently played a show with The Toasters at a roller
rink in Wayne, NJ. I would've gone to support them, but he didn't find out

Actually, it might be kinda cool... the kids tend to really like energy.
And the Woggles definitely have that.

In Florida, skinheads threw various things at the Woggles. They weren't
happy about it when they got back to Atlanta and had a drunkard throwing
cups of ice at them here. I hear that's big in Estrus-land, but not in the
hopitable (hospital-ble) South.

Take care now, y'all.

Ah, I see. I'll have to update my Neckreakers site, since I'd mentioned the
Insomniacs would be on that bill as well. Justina and I had been thinking
of going down there, but maybe we'll stay here instead -- I'd love to see

Speaking of Kim Fowley. I just picked up a Fowley comp on Dionysus last week
with some pretty cool stuff on it. I'm used to thinking of him as the
"Svengali-manager of the Runaways" but he did some (actually, a lot of) garage
oriented material. The disc also has a few cuts which present Fowley as a
variant Frank Zappa (evidently, he spent some time in the Mothers--wonder if he
taught Frank or if it was the other way around).

Nope... it's just that all four of the guys who were backing Mark Smith
played their last show with him on, I think, Dec. 6th. They now have a
group called The Sonic Mood Set that do much of the same set as they were
doing with Mark. I think they just didn't want to deal with him by that
point.

Anyway, Mark's lost band members before and just keeps going on. He played
a gig in Bethlehem, PA (their hometown) at the end of December with the
original lineup. Then another one a month later at the same location with
two original members (JT and Dave of the Original Sins) and one of the
Sonic Mood Set guys, I think, plus - for some songs - Shaggy, ex-Swingin'
Neckbreakers. I'm pretty sure this will be the lineup for the March 7th
show, as well.

So what songs are they doing? You may recall that I picked up that early
Creatures CD on Collectables recently that has "Sarah's Lies," "Cy-O-Nide,"
etc. Are they doing songs from that era, new songs, some combination
thereof...?

I just can't keep track of these Bethlehem bands!

Mainly the real early stuff... think first 7" and before. Mainly '86
vintage Creatures. Doubt they'll be doing any new ones... on the other
hand, with JT you never know. When we talked in December, he mentioned
that it was weird playing this stuff because he just doesn't write that way
anymore. But you just never know... the guy's extremely prolific. You'd
be surprised how much Original Sins' material there is in the can. I've
heard a bunch (and there's some killer stuff), but there's tons more than
that. Not to mention the *unrecorded* material.

>I just can't keep track of these Bethlehem bands!
To make it harder on you, there was also a really cool pop/vocal group
called St. John's Alliance at one point (well, two points, really...
mid-80s, then again around '90 or so). That band included Ken Bussiere of
the Creatures/O. Sins along with some other pals (one lineup also featured
Kevin Groler, who's played with The Sins, The Creatures, and is now in the
Sonic Mood Set), one of which lives real close to Ken's new home in
Orlando. They're planning on doing another project together. Also, Ken's
gonna probably release a St. John's Alliance comp CD.

O.K., so slap me. I play EVERYTHING. The quality of the music I
play on each show is dependent largely on the donations of music from
the artists and labels on the lists I belong to, and partly on how awake I
am at 5am every Saturday morning.
In the 10 months I've been doing "Coffee 'n' Smokes" I've broken many
artists heretofore unheard of or forgotten in the Boston area and/or not played
at any other station in the area, college/community or commercial. No brag,
just fact, so cut me a little slack here. Again, it's help from my fellow BOMP!
/Audities/Rockabilly listers that in part make the show what it is.
No offense taken, B.T.W., at least it's getting me to redouble my
efforts to get new stuff on the show.
Once more with feeling, the snail-mail address:

I hear Bad Company are poised to make a big comeback! I'll always remember
that I heard them again first on Coffee 'n' Smokes. ;-D

P.S. - Alex, please go ahead and post this past Saturday's playlist here.
I'm thinking maybe I'll try to force a digest to be created based on the

I'm still waiting for some messages I posted to regular Bomp this morning

Yeah, I posted a message on Kim Fowley to both lists, and the pseudo-bomp
posting was back in a couple of minutes, and I still haven't heard from old,
tired Bomp. I realize that we're not testing the old machine since it will be
out of business soon. It's great to see messages posted in real time and not
prehistoric time!!

Acctaully, I'm in no position to complain as my record collection has
several entries from Bad Company, Camper Van Beethoven (and Cracker too,
for that matter), *and* Grand Funk!

You know, when I got to work this morning and saw sope 30 Bomp messages --
not to mention digest #55 from last week sometime -- I thought that maybe
the bolis problems had been cleared up.

No such luck, evidently, as I have yet to see any of the messages I posted
this morning.

I'm curious to see what resolution Alan from Bolis comes up with... he did
say in that update I posted earlier today that he hoped to be able to
announce something today. Top on my list of curiosities:

1) Whether the bolis.com name will be retained

2) What the cost will be of whatever new hosting service he chooses

Of course, just because a new company has agreed to take over the list
doesn't mean we have to go with that company.

I wonder if whatever deal he's trying to make includes some minimum number
of lists/subscribers for that new company, and what happens if a bunch of
the existing Bolis lists bail out.

Earlier today a couple of my co-workers came back from a computer store's
annual 2-day clearance sale with breathless tales of bargains to be had.
One of them produced the ad from today's NY Times, and it included the very
digital camera I've had my eye on for the last few weeks.

It was close enough to lunchtime, so took the subway down there and managed
to get the last (only?) one for 50% off regular price. Looks like it was a
floor model, but the price was right ($149) and it's under warranty and all.

So, uh, look for some live Upper Crust photos on my site after this
weekend's local performances. :-)

Just filling bandwidth,
Evan

I'm sure that there are a lot of fish in the sea--server wise. I think a solid
server is more important than sticking with the bolis.com name. This is not to
minimize the pain of a transition--especially to Evan--but I think it would be a
manageable proposition.

Hey, glad to hear that! This label they're on (Emperor Norton) definitely
has some distribution problems.

Btw, Bob, did you catch my question at the bottom of a message last night
about the idea of a web page for signing up for the Bomp list? I was
wondering if your friend who had done something similar had experienced any
problems with people spoofing and adding/removing others without their
knowledge/consent.

Oh, I absolutely agree. I was mostly wondering out of idle curiosity, and
because I'd be surprised if someone agreed to pick up the additional
(though minimal) cost and administrative hassle of dealing with a new
domain name.

Plus, if the domain name were going to change anyway, that would be one
less reason to be among the other Bolis sheep flocking to the new host. ;-)
