Yes, Bompsters, the Harold Kelling (who now plays in the Atlanta
instrumental rock band the Hoods) that was mentioned as a guest artist in my
account of the Link Wray show =is= indeed the same Harold Kelling who played
during the '60s in the notorious Hampton Grease Band.

Though often overshadowed by his former bandmate, "kamikaze" guitarist Glenn
Phillips, Harold is a living legend and actually opened for Jimi Hendrix
once. It was truly astounding to see him playing "Rawhide" with Link, the
Flat Duo Jets, and Paul Peek of the Bluecaps.

Hey!

I'm stuck here in the wilds of northern Alabama. There are a few
bands worth seeing here. We get some bands passing thru-The
Heartdrops were here (at a pizza place) on Wednesday. We also get The
Subsonics (YAY!), The Woggles, The Quadrajets, and a few other
regional bands. The Spaceshits/Dirtys tour drove thru a snowstorm to
get here. Frigg-a-Go-Go played a terrific show on my birthday, I
don't remember a lot of stuff that happened that night. Man or
Astroman? played their first out of Auburn show at the world famous
(and now a karaoke bar) Tip-Top Cafe.

Anybody that wants to play here, get in touch.

I have a tape of local bands that I'm selling cheap, lemme know if you
want a copy.

There is at least one other Alabamer on the list. Hi Joy!

We don't have a big scene here but our governor is funnier than yours
is.

Seeya,
Kip

Is this the Latin American collection or the one with songs
from the states? I've got the Latin American one, have listened
to it a few times and reallly dig how the Latin music touches
(horns, different rhythms) make it seem different but still
psych.

If anyone's heard the collection of music from the States, I'd
like to know how it compares to the Latin American one? Do all
the songs sound alike, or are they different styles of psych?

Thanks,

I split my time between two fine cities. For educational
purposes, I spend much of the year in Nashville, as a law
student at Vanderbilt University. When school's out for
summer, I go to my hometown, Pittsburgh. Having been in
Nashville for just a few months, and being overburdened with
schoolwork most of the time, I haven't been able to check
out the local scene that much, but I did see the Donnas and
Groovie Ghoolies down the road in Murfreesboro, TN, the
other night (and when I had a brief "hey, nice show"
encounter with the lead-singin' Donna afterwards, her
nervous return smile belied her bad girl lookin' for a kiss
musical persona, and seemed little different from one of
the smiles thrown my way by many a mild-mannered girl her
age over the last few years. That or she was afraid I was
a stalker or something).

Since I come into free time much more frequently in
Pittsburgh, I'm much more familiar with that city's local
scene. I like several bands, but few of them get much
popular support up there. Best are the Frampton Brothers,
a power-pop garage-rock quartet in the Fastbacks/Young
Fresh Fellows vein. I design and maintain their web site
(www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/2083). Currently, they
are searching for both a record deal and a drummer (they've
been through eight drummers in their eight-year existence,
including Tom Hohn and Max Taurasaro (sp?), both of whom
played with the Cynics, and Bob Hoag, who now drums and
writes songs for Pollen). Other Pittsburgh bands I like
include Suburban Sect (anglophiles who have a new album
coming out in a few months), Honeyburst (featuring Michael
Kastelic, formerly of the Cynics and always of Get Hip), the
Ultimatics and the Mt. McKinleys.

I'm always looking for music fans in both cities, so feel
free to drop me a line.

Thanks to those who have offered their kind words in the wake of the Bomp
list moving to its new home. (I felt kind of bad that I had to reply to
one of the thankers to ask him not to send HTML-formatted e-mails to the
list, but that's life!)

I, in turn, would like to offer my public thanks to the unsung hero of this
transition. Wilson Smith, who runs the XNet2 server, is actually one of
those lurkers I commented on yesterday! When I posted the announcement
about the impending Bolis shutdown to the list last month, he responded
with an offer to host the list at no charge. After exchanging some
messages with Wilson and setting up a small test list that some of you
helped with, I was comfortable that this would be a good alternative in
case the company Alan from Bolis found was not an attractive option. I
also thought that having the list on a server run by a list member would be
in keeping with the kind of indie/grassroots/diy spirit that is seen in
labels like Bomp and in a lot of the music enjoyed by most on this list.

(Having said that, I would like to emphasize that the primary quality of a
list host is the ability to get messages to subscribers in a timely manner,
and XNet2 is no less responsible for this just because one of us is running
it.)

Now, before people start unsubscribing in droves, let's return to
discussing "surfadelic
garagepunk music, culture, and whatever else we feel like talking about."

Another thing I've seen on the Rockabilly list is a list of bands with
their snail and e-mail addresses. Mebbe that would work here.
Take it one further and do one for the DJs on the list.
Even further to list those with record labels.
After all, for most of us (O.K., me...) the List is a valuable resource.
I think that would be a decent housewarming for the new BOMP! list.

That was pretty high-level; it identified how many subscribers from each
top-level domain (.com, .edu, .au, .jp, etc.). I received that weekly from
bolis, but I'm not sure offhand if it's a majordomo thing or a bolis thing.
At the least I can post the last one I got from bolis, and try to find out
how those were generated.

Okay, here's my favorite manager trick: "Great idea! Go ahead and put it
together!"

Rather than clutter the list with individual "I'm a ______" messages, I
would suggest that one of the people on the list who's a dj (Alex?)
volunteer to receive private e-mails from other djs who want to make
themselves known, then compile and post a list. Similarly, maybe a band
member could do the same for bands, a label person could do the same for
labels. If you want to volunteer, just post a message to the list asking
[whoever] to send you a private message, and report back in a few days.

(Tip for bomp-digesters: finish reading the digest before you volunteer in
case someone else already has!)

The Baskervilles played their first official show in New York city (at
Brownies)last night and it was well worth going to see them. It was a
great show!
The band consists of four members and features bomper Rob in guitar, lead
vocals and occasional organ, tamburine and harmonica. The Baskervilles
started their set with a cover of "Leaving Here" and continued with eight
more songs -- including one more cover, "Fortune Teller" -- which
displayed their sound that could be described as a hybrid of garage with
beat, rhythm and blues, and mod pop (terms somewhat arbitrary perhaps,
especially as the band has its own unique sound, but through them you
might get an idea of what they sound like). They closed the show with
a one song encore requested by the relatively small audience (the expected
result of playing on a weekday...).
A very enjoyable show. Go and see them if you get the chance!

Sorry I missed this show; hopefully I'll catch them the next time they play.

Speaking of good local (to NYC) bands, the Defilers are playing this Sunday
night at the Continental along with the Bad Popes and the Bitterhearts (or
maybe that's two words). Unfortunately, since it's a school night the
headliner actually goes on first! So the Bitter Hearts are skedded to go
on at 10pm (apparently this band features former mambers of the Waitresses,
Headless Horsemen and Das Damen), followed by the Bad Popes at 11 and the
Defilers at 12. If you can stand to be out that late on a Sunday it's
definitely worth attending!

This makes sense. All you DJs e-mail me privately with the following
information:

Name:
Name of show:
Day and time of show:
Call letters and (frequency)
Affiliation: (optional. Indicate whether station is affiliated with an
                    educational institution)
Mail Stop/P.O. Box/Street address:
City/Town and State:
e-mail address/URL:
Type of show (optional. Though all of our shows are grounded in D.I.Y.
rock & roll, we all lean in certain directions with what we
all play. Some shows feature strictly old stuff, others lean
                          toward country/rockabilly, others toward R & B, still others
toward pop schlock (like yours truly...))

Also a thousand pardons to Blair, I forgot completely about 'zine
producers...

Okay. Here's an update from flyover land.

I've been in the Kansas City area for 10 years. I spend lots of time at
Recycled Sounds, Music Exchange and the CD Warehouse. Listen to KLZR radio.

Before that 6 years in Omaha, 7 years in Chicago, 4 years in New York state and
18 years in Milwaukee, WI. Pretty nomadic existence, all things considered.

Does anyone know what's become of ROIR records. I've been trying to replace
an old copy of their "Garage Sale" tape (they were cassette only for years
before expanding to CD's) I suspect they've gone under but with such a
catalogue as they had it would be a shame if nothing was re-released.

Don't know what happened to ROIR, but many of their tapes were released on
CD in the past five years (someone else will have to recall the label).
Unfortunately, Garage Sale (one of my fave comps of mid-80s garage acts)
never got that treatment. Truly a shame. Wish someone would take the
initiative and put it out. Maybe even do an update to the liner notes to
let people know what happened to various bands/band members.

I lived in Park Slope for a while, about ten years ago. How I miss trying to
stay awake on the 'F' train long enough to get home from a night out.
Especially if I'd been to Maxwell's in Hoboken, and spent an hour or so
waiting for the "PATH" train, too!!
