Subject: A Night With The Montgomery Cliffs

Had a really fun night out on Saturday in Baltimore - got to see The Montgomery Cliffs for the third time at Cafe Tatoo!!! Yes, another good show. Solid, as expected, following their return from a two-week tour out to Poptopia and back with Love Nut. Got to hang out with The Cliffs, who are a swell bunch o' fellas, as well as some guys from Love Nut and Splitsville.

The Cliffs really impressed me when they invited Max Mueller of Love Nut up on stage to join them in performing "Right Time," Max's rockin' solo cut that is featured on Fuzzy Logic (contact Greg Colburn for order info, like now!). I would've sworn that they backed him on that recording, given the precision with which they played it. But the drummer (Dennis) told me they had never even rehearsed it with him before they played it live that night - wow! Max then stayed on stage to provide a two-guitar attack on Hope, a cool song from their Andiamo! CD. Joey Salvia, lead singer of The Montgomery Cliffs, mentioned that they're at work on new songs for a follow-up CD.

The Cliffs were followed by The put-outs, but I regret to say I didn't
catch their act. They sounded good from outside, where I was hangin' out. Garage Sale closed the night's festivities, and they were a fun surfy pop combo that I'd like to see again some time, when they go on a bit earlier.

Be seeing you,
Bill

As I mentioned yesterday, any messages sent to the list between
approximately 2:30am Sunday and 11am yesterday (Central Time) did not get
included in a digest due to the server problems.

Since over half the list is on digest (around 170 vs. 130), you may want to
re-post items of particular interest that were sent during that time. It
would be greatly appreciated if you include the word "re-post" or "re-send"
in the subject header for the benefit of non-digest list subscribers who
may have seen your message the first time. That way the individual
re-posted messages can be easily identified and deleted.

HA HA, great expose on that band. I saw them last summer in LA and they
were all right, except the PA didn't work. The guitarist had a cool
fender twin, but she also has a BOSS "Heavy Metal" stomp box, hmmm, never
could get into that sound. They were totally different than their
records, kinda disapointing, because I loves my no-fi garage. Anyway the
LA weekly quoted them as saying something like they couldn't understand
why people liked their radio x stuff "it is just recorded so bad, you
can't even tell I play a Les Paul," talk about unlear on the concept. It
was also kind of sad to see these middle aged guys transfixed by these
girls, simply because they are so young, I mean sexy they are not. But
they are all right I guess for a glam band revival kind of thing, all hail
radio x.

Subject: Monthly Admin Notes

As you may have noticed since the list switched over from Bolis, I've
removed the four-line footer with unsubscribe instructions that had been
appended to every Bomp message. I've also changed the settings for the
list so that posts with majordomo commands (like unsubscribe) are not
automatically bounced. This may result in an occasional "subscribe" or
"unsubscribe" message going to the entire list. If this becomes a chronic
problem I'll reconsider, but it seemed that more often than not messages
were instead being bounced for using more obscure majordomo commands like
"who" or "which" that tend to be a part of everyday speech.

I'm hoping to at least head off the "unsubscribe" messages by adding
additional X-headers at the top of each message (or digest). With many
(most?) e-mail programs, you'll now see unsubscribe info, the url for the
Bomp web site, and my e-mail address in case anyone has list questions.

Additionally, I'm planning to send out an announcement monthly that will
essentially be the "info" message you received when you subscribed. This
will include what address to post messages to and how to subscribe to the
regular and digest forms of the list.

And here it is now:

TO SEND A MESSAGE TO THE LIST:
Send your message to bomp@xnet2.com

TO UNSUBSCRIBE:
Send email to majordomo@xnet2.com with the following in the body of the
message:

unsubscribe bomp

Or, if you're unsubscribing from the digest edition:

unsubscribe bomp-digest

TO SUBSCRIBE:
Send email to majordomo@xnet2.com with the following in the body of the
message:

subscribe bomp

Or, if you want to subscribe to the digest form of the list:

subscribe bomp-digest

Please save this message so that you'll know how to unsubscribe should you
choose to do so.

Does anyone know where I can get a new copy of Link Wray's
"Country Preacher" collection? It came out on Mercury
Chronicles about 3 years ago, and it's out of print already. It
collects stuff he did in a country-rock vein in the 70s,
including some stuff with Jerry Garcia. I used to have one of
the original albums. If you know where there's a new copy (or a
used one in pretty good shape) please let me know. Thanks.

Yep, not really LINK WRAY, but I fondly remember that stuff,
and like that kinda Texas waltzing, laid-back Sir Douglas

New Orleans? GREAT place - but a lot of tourists and crime
Wilmington? - needs a little work, but if we all get there before the
property prices go sky high, maybe
Amsterdam? - yeah - I lived there for a year - it does rock - but it does
rain a lot too (if you want to check it out - Northwest has a deal for
this weekend for $249 rt from Baltimore!)
Baltimore is super cool - good music fans there - people will go out to
see bands they've never heard of and actually get into it - again with
the crime - but super cheap!
How about Milwaukee? (Just waiting for the floodgates of affirmation to
burst open)

Milwaukee isn't what it used to be years ago. It's pretty desolate now.But
the rent is cheap and so's the beer. But the depression level is pretty
high. That's the only reason for me not moving there.

Geez... I'd consider heading up to Boston from NYC for that one... 'cept
Danny Doll Rod tells me that The Demolition Doll Rods will be playing
Coney Island High in Manhattan that night with ? & the Mysterians (and
probably the Hentchmen).

Besides, Andy Shernoff said the 'Taters will be playing around NYC again

Ooh, tell me about it! I want to renounce my citizenship right now, and
make that move myself (regardless of the rain, Paige)! However, it's
probably just a pipedream. I'm from Peoria, IL - world headquarters of
Caterpillar Tractor (oh boy!), birthplace of the automobile (Charles Duryea
built 'em right here before Henry Ford), Richard Pryor, Fibber McGee and
Molly, Betty Friedan, Dan Fogleberg (YUCK!), Sam Kinnison (East Peoria),
bluesman Luther Allison, Susan "Lori Partridge" Dey (actually, she's from
Pekin) & the 60's stomping grounds of the Warner Brothers ("Please Mr.
Sullivan"), The Suburban 9 to 5 ("Elevator Operator"/Gary "REO Speedwagon"
Richrath's teen garage band), The Rockin' R's ("Crazy Baby", actually, from
the "suburb" of Metamora, IL, and appeared on Ed Sullivan!), Dave Diamond
(circa 1961 on WIRL), and the present day home of GONN's Craig Moore (and
fellow bompers, Stacy Calvert and Jim Moran). Peoria was once a vaudeville
haven, which is where the phrase "will it play in Peoria?"/"if it'll play
in Peoria, it'll play anywhere" came from. Known for it's super critical
audiences, vaudeville entertainers always tested out their acts here before
taking the show on the road. Don't come here looking for any remnants of
the vaudeville era, though - nearly all of the magnificent theatres have
been torn down (along with everything else with any character/charm). It's
still a major test market for many companies trying out new products, based
on the "will it play in Peoria?" idiom. I'm not sure there's anything else
to brag about. The place is actually a shithole! Andrea, you think
Boston's bad?!?!? Try Peoria...

I went there back in the fall, and had a great time. Got to see the

mentioned in my previous post, Peoria is none too exciting. Stacy and I
think Atlanta would be cool, too. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in...

Henry Kloss of Cambridge Soundworks fame designed a turntable called the KLH
in the 70's. I believe the actual turntable was designed by someone else but
the package includes a pair of KLH speakers which for my money (i.e. not all
that much)
are absolutely perfect. The model 24, which I own, cost me $120. It's belt
driven and plays 16 rpm's to 78. Obviously I bought it used. That's my two
cent's.

Are you looking for high-end stuff or just a cheap-o turntable to play
your stuff on? In '91, I was finding the cheap crap for about 60 bucks on
that stretch of 8th Avenue between Port Authority and Penn Station.

I wouldn't recommend that stuff to anyone who needed something really
good, but I've used them before and they weren't too bad.

The absolute best rock turntable is the Rega 2 (and better yet, the Rega 3)
and right now they're on sale at about $100 off from The Analog Shop, Inc
@(716)742-2860. I believe the 2's are about $450 regular and well worth it.
I just got back into analog about a year ago, and I cannot believe how much
better a decent turntable sounds than even a top end CD system. Another
place to look is www.needledoctor.com but they can be expensive. My
recommendation is to save as much as you can and buy the best unit you can
afford. With a really decent turntable, even the lowest fi LP can bring the
guitar amp and drums right into your living room!

I'm selling my Thorens 280 (about a year old) for $225, if you're
interested.

Uh... exsqueeze me? As a proud member of "these middle aged guys" I'd
like to argue that the transfixation is not based solely on the age of
these girls. That guitarist *IS* sexy! Take another look at the cover of
the new cd. Grrrrowl... And Donna A. (the singer) is sexy, too, in a
Morticia Addams kinda way.

NOOOO!! That's what happened to the Bay Area punk scene, MRR and Lookout
Records gets big and BOOM, crusties everywhere... not to slam SF, East
Bay, or California in general but I think everyone should take the info
they read & learn and music they hear from being on this list and create
happening scenes in your own cities. That's the real "grassroots"
approach to infiltrating America (and the rest of the world) with real
rock'n'roll! In the late 80's/early 90's I saw LOTS of my friends move
to places like SF, Seattle, and Austin like sheep (sorry; no one I knew
ever moved to Boston). I've always been a fan of staying where you are
and trying to make it a better place. More noble, IMHO. But I guess the
grass is always greener and that's the way of many of us rock'n'roll
nomads...

I'm glad this came up, because I've been thinking about upgrading my aging
Technics SL-1700. Does anyone have an opinion about the relative merits of the
Technics 1200 versus the comparable Gemini model (don't remember the number). I
see that at retail, the Gemini can be about $100 cheaper--but then it's not a
Technics either.

My advice to you young man is to buy a vintage turntable. I'm running both a
Technics and a Garard currently and the Garard is the workhorse. The company
went out of business in like 1968 or something, but their turntables were
magnificent. Not only that, but they looked soooo cool, too. Big TV knobs,
rounded corners, lots of steel and wood. Neat objects if you can find 'em. One
place to look for vintage as well as great new hi-fi equipment is Stereo
Exchange on Broadway just north of Houston Street in Manhattan. I don't know
if they have a mailorder catalogue, but you can always call 'em.

a couple of ska/scooter/spinners I worked with had a couple of Gemini
tables we used to spin the hours away on a Sunday night. They are not a
smooth as the 1200s. Sony used to make a back cue table, not sure if you
can find that around. The price on used equipment such as the 1200 is way
out of site, but you may get lucky..

Just a quick announcement to let you all know I have FINALLY succeeded in
figuring out how to make frames work, and as a result the new Bomp index
page should be much easier to use. Let me know if you like/don't like it,
(and if you find any problems; I'm still working on a bunch of them, and a
few pages are still under construction, so give me a few days. And note
that if you prefer the old format, you can still get it via the Temple
page, though you'll have to use this URL:
http://www.bomp.com/bomp/Temple.html

Also, there is now a live Bomp chat room: Bomp'sGarageParty, accessible
thru the website. It's a commericial chat provider, so there are ads and
shit, but you really can go there and talk live to anyone else who's there.
You can make appointments amongst yourselves to meet at a certain time,
whatever. Just a little something extra I thought somebody might enjoy. If
you don't wanna bother going to the Bomp site, the chat room URL is

http://www.talkcity.com/chat.cgi?room=BompsGarageParty

and, as a final reminder, the Bomp website is at:
http://www.bomp.com/bomp/Index.html

Cheers,

This is the only Link Wray I didn't feel bad about trading off. Not
