april 1981, live stuff NY 1982, plus homerecordings 1980-81! The set is called
"early warning" & is available as a normal two-CD set or as a special

I'm going to have to check out that article. Haven't had the pleasure of seeing that one. The Noise is one of the local rags I actually like checking out from time to time -- I get a kick out of the reviews. Got
to agree with the radio issue, although we've all had the discussion of what & who else is killing the scene. Although we have our good moments -- the Ventures are playing next week and there have been some other
great shows lately. I don't mind Boston so much, but I've been here way too long. I gotta say that I wouldn't mind moving someplace else for a while. JJ lived in Austin for a while & loved it, and I'll be there
for my second time March 18 for SXSW. So the verdict is still out as to whether I'd move there permanently, but I think that it would be our first choice. Although I'll be "wicked" (authentic Boston lingo for you
foreigners) bummed out if you move, Andrea -- being one of the coolest people here! I'd also miss certain areas of Boston, like I've been visiting the Albany St./Children's Hospital area lately, which is right near
Thayer Street -- where I used to party with my friends at the Dogmatics loft. But you can't live on memories alone.

Are you performing? Or doing the conference only? My husband George
Bedard is going to be appearing as part of SxSW at the Bucket o' Suds or
someplace on the 18th, and will be playing with Bill Kirchen on the
following Sunday - probably engaging in some swing/rockabilly guitar
dueling. He's not a garage act but he IS fantastic and if anyone in the
area wants to hear him I will obtain more detail.
I'd like to know where the Rasslers are performing - and if you have any
advice for a first-time particiapnt, what's most worth your time, etc.

my mother's 1962 Garrard works like a dream, but she needs something
replaced every 5 years or so- of course the stereo cabinet is longer than
my car. in the Washington, DC area there is a chain called High Tech
Audio-video which when they first openened would sell stunning 60s/70s
Carver, Garrard, Polk equipment. Your audiophile $2000 tube receivers and
amplifiers sold used for $200. Currently their selection is nowhere near as
cool, but there are still bargains to be had.

a friend got an amazing turntable in which 4 curved "fingers" hold the
record up instead of a mat, Stereolab eat your heart out.

This is on the Sundazed's BeatRocket (vinyl-only) label and their Web site says:
Here's the recording industry's version of walking into that little record shop in South Dakota and finding everything just like it was in 1966. Halifax, Nova Scotia's Great Scots as renowned today for wearing kilts on stage as for their knockout British Invasion-style debut disc on Sundazed cut another album's worth of Hollies-meet-Stones-meet-Searchers fueled stunners in 1965. Here, at last, is the other Great Scots packagea 10 track rampage through material so woolly that only Eric Burdon & Co. or Mick, Brian & Keith, Inc. would dare to followand featuring liner notes by legendary Caribou, Maine deejay Wally Berk, who never, ever stopped believing himself to be "the sixth Great Scot."

Vanessa Paradis was one of the most famous singer here in France... she
began at the age of 16 in 1987 with an enormous hit called "Jo le Taxi"
that stayed at the first place of the national charts during more than 6
months.... her first lp was full of that kind of popy muzac that please
kids at the age of 15, and she kept on making the top 5 during months and
months with various singles ("Manolo", "Marylin & John", etc...) she
finally won a "Victoire de la Musique" one or two years later, and she had
the chance to be helped by Serge Gainsbourg a few months before he
died...he wrote a complete album for her (lyrics only), and I must admit
that this lp must be the best she has ever done (...mostly because of the
lyrics, one more time...)...I remember that the promotion of the album at
that time was done with a sentence of gainsbourg, which hit the minds :
"Paradis, c'est l'enfer..." ("Paradis, it's hell.."), and because of the
sulfurous reputation of Gainsbourg that has always been known as being a
mix of sexual addicted and play boy (remember his dates with Brigitte
Bardot in the 60s, Jane Birkin in the 70s, Bambou - a french top model- in
the 80s....),and because he was around 60 years old at that time, and
Paradis barely 20...Anyway ! after Gainsbourg died (in 1990), she began to
appear dressed like a hippie, and it was the time that Kravitz began to hit
the charts here... of course , all that lauuched a new fashion here , based
on a Woodstock-revival look, and all the shit that come with that... Lennon
and Hendrix were the two new heroes of that wave, of course because of
Kravitz ' sound... and a few weeks later, Paradis came back in the charts
with an album and a few singles written by Kravitz, completly Motown
influenced, but also with a cover of "Take a ride..." of Lou Reed... She
toured at that time in Europe, and it was an enormous success.... she was
also on the screens, beginning an actress career...after having hit the
charts for years, she stopped completly her singer career, and devoted her
time to movies...you can see her in various french films, but fortunatly ,
she has quit the radio airwaves since 2 or 3 years....
You will probably wonder how I am so aware of the career of this lolita
whose music has really nothing to do with garage or whatever (even if her
last lp was indeed 60s-Kravitz oriented....but Kravitz for me is what I'd
call "another aspect of the 60s", if I wanna stay polite)...but I was 14
when she was 15 and I could do nothing else than following her career, her
face, her sound being at that time EVERYWHERE on the radios, the streets,
the papers, television, etc... even the national radios were doing special
shows when she was about to issue an album....impossible to escape from
Paradis at that time, except if living like an ermit.... but I must admit
too that she was the cause of many of my first hard-ons (after my Kim Wild
time) when I was a kid... that must explain this...

about the early days of his sexual life on the Bomp list)

Anyway, Quebec city is quite a nice place, touristy and all, nice antique

Last time I remember seeing Sylvain play was when he was doing a weekly

Pretty good... basically old Dolls stuff with a new tune here or there.
Oh yeah, plus some of Syl's later stuff ("Kids are Back" I think was a
regular one.) But alot can happen in 7 years. On the other hand, I can't

Hey Bompsters!

The new Magnet magazine is out; this time I devote the entire "Garage"
column to the fab Zombies box set. I'll add it to my "Garage Nation"
website in the next week or so.

Also, the new Cosmik Debris webzine should be online in the next couple
days, and my latest "Psychedelicatessen" column covers Big Boy Pete, The

There's no archive available of past "Psychedelicatessen" columns at the

permits.

Send along any garage/psych web-links for me to add to "Garage Nation,"
or drop a line just to say "Hey!"

Subject: Re:Turntables

I've seen a lot of nice turntable equipment around lately. Some of it is
extremely expensive even before you buy the (sold separately) cartridge
and needle. But that doesnt bother so much as the fact that almost none of
the receivers being sold nowadays come equipped with a phono input.
I have a handful of turntables, and I have been looking into a backup
stereo for my basement/"rumpus room".There are multitudes of surprisingly
compact units out there. They have cool flashing lights and "ambience"
reverb settings,CD changers and all kinds of useless controls. But I am
unable to find any with Phono inputs. The guy at the stereo store says they
are available on certain JVC models but none of the models he sells has
them.
Keeping in mind I have my "real hi-fi" equipment up in the living room
and just want something decent to play my records thru,Can anybody suggest
a decent compact unit with phono capabilities? I dont need a cassette
deck, dont need a CD changer but a single CD player would be good, and an at
least workable FM section is mandatory, and a functional equalizer would be
nice.Could spend maybe 4-500$.Another possibilty is if anybody knows of a
good preamp to run the turnatable thru.Outside of that I could always just
stick with this cheap-ass Panasonic unit that has served me well for near
20 years, maybe buy some nice speakers for it.Advice is appreciated.

It's confusing to me too. At least, having set it up, I'm registered and
have a nickname so all I had to do was press the "enter" button and I was
in there. A rectangular box at the bottom of the screen is where you type
and when you hit return it appears on the main screen. I think you have to
establish a nickname and log in for the first time, but it shouldn't be
that hard, they seem to have hundreds of chat rooms operating. Good luck.

Subject: band lists

Following up on a recent thread, if anyone does do the legwork of compiling
a fairly comprehensive list of URLs or email addresses for current garage
bands, fanzines, or labels, I will be happy to create a special area on the
Bomp website where it can be posted. Thus far I've stayed away from current
stuff on our Links page, but only because I didn't have the info handy.

By the way, the new Website is up and seems to be running smoothly. It
didn't turn out to be possible to keep the non-frames version active,
however, but since there's probably less than 5% of net surfers whose
browsers don't support frames, I hope that won't be a problem for anyone.

They haven't gone under, but they are in serious financial trouble due to
the domino-series of east coast distributor failures over the past few
months, which has come close to wiping out quite a few indie labels,
including ours! But we'll survive, and I think ROIR will too. They at least
have their deal with Danceteria in France to help keep 'em afloat. As for
"Garage Sale", I've never understood why it went out of print, and why no
one's done it on CD. Maybe those rights weren't granted to Goldmine by the
bands at the time? Jeff Tamarkin would know; he's not at GM anymore, but I
can ask him. I'll keep you guys informed if I hear anything.

I lived in Peabody for damn near 20 years, and I would have to say that
civic-wise,its agreat place to live.Dont expect much in the way of
entertainment (although I have to admit the Cabaret is a fun place for
that genre of nightlife) but of all the places I have lived, there was a
unique sense of community pride, especially when one considers the rapidly
failing infrastructure of the New England quasi-coast.I remember the
Mayor,Peter Torigian, from when he used to tend bar at his brother
Charlie's cafe,when off-duty from his job as a letter carrier.He has been
Mayor for a good 18 years now, hasnt run for Congress or senate.
I lived in downtown Peabody. The outlying West Peabody seems to be an
area unto itself, doesnt care to get involved with municipal issues. When i
left 10 years ago the town was starting to become much more ethnically
eclectic, but it seemed to work well.I was there for a visit last
summer, and despite exponetially increased traffic,if my family was
willing,i would move back in a minute.
