Hiya. Quick plug here...

The new issue of Cosmik Debris is online at
http://www.cosmik.com, and this month we're featuring a full-length interview
with Colin Blunstone of The Zombies. The giveaway (drawing) is a rare sampler
from the box set that exists primarily for promoting the set to the media. The
CD has hits, rarities, and even interview recordings.

Also featured this month are interviews with Ann Wilson of Heart and The Love
Mongers and the legendary guitar granny Cordell Jackson. There's also a
feature on Board AID 5 for Lifebeat, an article on Ani DiFranco, and our usual
slate of reviews and columns, including Timothy Gassen's Psychedelicatessen.
Check it out. Thanks.

Deej

PS - I have to confess, though I've gotten used to interviewing musicians I
admire, I was totally blown away to be talking to Colin Blunstone. What a
great guy, though. Gotta be one of the nicest in the biz.

of THE ZOMBIES, The Love Mongers, and Ani
DiFranco. Check it out at http://www.cosmik.com

What's wrong with this picture? This comp includes Casey Jones & The
Governors, an English group (led by Liverpool's Brian Cassar from Cass &
The Cassanovas), who just made Hamburg their "permanent" home.

Yet there seems to be no mention of _the_ pioneer German beat group, the
Rattles. The accents were thick, the lyrics garbled in some cases, but the
Rattles, at least in the beginning, were pure Merseybeat clones. They did,
in the 70s, succumb to the "Krautrock" genre that seems to be so reviled in
some circles.

Check out "The Rattles -- Twist Im Star-Club" on Repertoire Records.

Hey Lola,
Yes, please send more info on your husband's performance. We're both big swing & rockabilly fans, not to mention Bill Kirchen fans. JJ's worked with Bill -- JJ is the head honcho of touring and Special Events coordinator at Rounder Records, and Upstart Records is one of Rounder's distributed labels. Nick Lowe did an album for Upstart and did a tour with Bill Kirchen (who's on Black Top.) Anyway, we'd love to see it and will definitely check it out -- so please forward the info!

JJ will be at SXSW for Rounder, and I'll be there on business as well -- I work at Joyce Linehan Artist Management.

The Rasslers are playing, but not performing as of yet. Thanks for the support, though!

I gotta say that even though this email has nothing to do with garage
music, it was a great read. I think JJ posted something recently about
Serge, so I won't elaborate, but we got a video of rare Serge Gainsbourg
stuff and we absolutely love it -- he's got this absolute cool about him
that's undeniable, and it's no wonder he spent time with Brigitte. For
those not familiar, I'm no expert at all, but some of his stuff rocks,
some is great pop with a trashy edge, a lot if it is cool jazz -- real
cool jazz borderline beatnik style. But if someone can describe it
better for Bompers, than please do -- it's stuff to be checked out.

Vanessa Paradis was one of the most famous singer here in France... she
began at the age of 16 in 1987 with an enormous hit called "Jo le Taxi"
that stayed at the first place of the national charts during more than 6

months.... her first lp was full of that kind of popy muzac that please
kids at the age of 15, and she kept on making the top 5 during months
and
months with various singles ("Manolo", "Marylin & John", etc...) she
finally won a "Victoire de la Musique" one or two years later, and she
had
the chance to be helped by Serge Gainsbourg a few months before he
died...he wrote a complete album for her (lyrics only), and I must admit

that this lp must be the best she has ever done (...mostly because of
the
lyrics, one more time...)...I remember that the promotion of the album
at
that time was done with a sentence of gainsbourg, which hit the minds :
"Paradis, c'est l'enfer..." ("Paradis, it's hell.."), and because of the

sulfurous reputation of Gainsbourg that has always been known as being a

mix of sexual addicted and play boy (remember his dates with Brigitte
Bardot in the 60s, Jane Birkin in the 70s, Bambou - a french top model-
in
the 80s....),and because he was around 60 years old at that time, and
Paradis barely 20...Anyway ! after Gainsbourg died (in 1990), she began
to
appear dressed like a hippie, and it was the time that Kravitz began to
hit
the charts here... of course , all that lauuched a new fashion here ,
based
on a Woodstock-revival look, and all the shit that come with that...
Lennon
and Hendrix were the two new heroes of that wave, of course because of
Kravitz ' sound... and a few weeks later, Paradis came back in the
charts
with an album and a few singles written by Kravitz, completly Motown
influenced, but also with a cover of "Take a ride..." of Lou Reed... She

toured at that time in Europe, and it was an enormous success.... she
was
also on the screens, beginning an actress career...after having hit the
charts for years, she stopped completly her singer career, and devoted
her
time to movies...you can see her in various french films, but fortunatly
,
she has quit the radio airwaves since 2 or 3 years....
You will probably wonder how I am so aware of the career of this lolita
whose music has really nothing to do with garage or whatever (even if
her
last lp was indeed 60s-Kravitz oriented....but Kravitz for me is what
I'd
call "another aspect of the 60s", if I wanna stay polite)...but I was 14

when she was 15 and I could do nothing else than following her career,
her
face, her sound being at that time EVERYWHERE on the radios, the
streets,
the papers, television, etc... even the national radios were doing
special
shows when she was about to issue an album....impossible to escape from
Paradis at that time, except if living like an ermit.... but I must
admit
too that she was the cause of many of my first hard-ons (after my Kim
Wild
time) when I was a kid... that must explain this...

Wow,
A brilliant reply. As far as Gainsbourg, anyone that works with Serge must
have something to offer (though maybe just to him).
I did see a pretty bad French "Hard Rock" band once by the name of

These shows aren't all confirmed yet, but they're looking pretty solid:

16 Thu - Alley Katz, Richmond VA
17 Fri - Local 506, Chapel Hill NC
18 Sat - Star Bar, Atlanta GA, with the Bomboras and the Quadrajets
20 Mon - Sapphire Supper Club, Orlando FL, with the Bomboras and the Hate
Bombs
21 Tue - The Rubb, Tampa FL
22 Wed - The Covered Dish, Gainesville FL
23 Thu - The Cow Haus, Tallahassee FL
24 Fri - The Chukker, Tuscaloosa AL
25 Sat - The Dixie Cafe, New Orleans LA

Additional bands on the bill are still being worked out, but a good number
of these shows (maybe from Atlanta to N.O.) may be with The Bomboras. The
Hate Bombs are probably going to be on all the Florida shows. There's also
the possibility of shows in Washington DC on Wednesday April 15th and
Pensacola FL on Sunday the 26th, but those are still up in the air. For
the latest, check the live dates page at

bought a new (cheap) Grado cartridge just to make sure that it really
worked before getting anything costlier. The only problem is that it
sometimes skips for no apparent reason -- even on brand new records (45s

I'm planning to bring it in next week to a stereo shop that has a fairly
good rep to see what they think, but I figured I'd tap the collective
intelligence on this list in the meantime. One thing I was thinking of was
that a better cartridge might help; the one in there now is fairly bulky,
and the stylus itself is all but surrounded by the plastic housing, or
whatever you'd call it. In other cartridges I've seen, the stylus tends to
be more free... not sure whether that means anything though. Any tips or

THE French pop king of the late 50's, 6T's and early 7T's..Apparently there

I had never heard of Serge Gainsbourg before this thread. Then today i
received a cd I had ordered from a Canadian band called Polaris. All
original instrumentals, except....."N'ecoute pas les idoles" by Serge
Gainsbourg.

It's a pretty good cd. In case anybody's interested it's on the Iglu Music
Group label PO Box 122 Station P Toronto, ON M5S 2S7 Canada. The Iglu mogul
(who's a great guy) descibed the band's sound thusly: "Anyway, back to
Ottawa's Titans of Twang: they mix Dakus, Ventures, Shadows type stuff
with just a touch of that loungy feel in their melodic approach. Not that
you'll be lounging too much listening to this, trust me: it moves!"

Now I have to get ready (read:nap!) for what could be a 3 show night if the
timing works out (the Donnas and co. at Coney Island High, Church Keys and
Simon and the Bar sinisters at Nightengales and Mondo Topless back at Coney
Island High).

Boston surf/grind quintet, The Fathoms, will be opening for The Ventures at
the Middle East in Cambridge, MA this Thursday March 12th. For those who
have seen them, you know the deal. For those who haven't, if you get the
chance, check 'em out- a terrific band.

uh, sure, yeah. i have a few good comps of Quebecois and French rock.
"rumble" is a great one covering Quebecois "ye-ye" groups of the 60s
like Les Miserables, Les Lutins, Les Loups Blancs. Put out by some folks
in Montreal a few years back. and the recently-issued "Ils sont fous ces
Gaulois" has a few good tracks on it, too. Probably does help if you
understand a bit of french, though. Saw a band called Platon et Les
Caves a few years back (in me old home town of Ottawa) who were
hilarious, doing french-ified versions of old R&R standards, introducing
them all in English ("This next song is in French, ze language of
LUV")...
Outside of the garagerock vein, I've gotten kicks from things like Les
Colocs from Quebec ("Bon Yeu donne-moi un Job") and Mano Negra from
France / Spain.
any other suggestions?

oh, and JJ and Jen Rassler <jrassler@sprynet.com> mentioned the
Dogmatics in passing. damn, there was a band. never did see them (I
don't think they ever made it to Canada), but have damn near worn those
two albums out over the years.

There was an article about it some time ago in the NY Times. Probably
about 6 months back. It was in one of the big weekend sections, talking
about how the area between Delancey and Houston and east of the Bowery was
becoming the Next Big Thing. Under live music venues, they talked about
this place which should be opening this Spring. Supposed to be fairly
large. I think it's down around Delancey and the Bowery. Possibly one
block above Delancey, I'm not sure. I know I saw the building last time I
was down that way dropping a friend off.

You don't. I just moved to Gainesville from Bloomington, IN (one college
town to another...). And though Gainesville doesn't have shit for a garage
scene, and the record stores COMPLETELY SUCK, there are a lot worse places
to be stuck.

Hi again,

Wanted to announce, for those interested, that Gary Yoder from the Oxford
Circle,
Kak, and Blue Cheer will visit KDVS to chat on my radio show on Sunday Mar
8th.
That's tomorrow already, geez! Short notice, I know, but I just set it up
yesterday.

He promises to bring down some rare goodies down for airplay. So get those
tape recorders ready...he's a great guy and it promises to be a good time.
