anyone planning to attend sxsw should know that the clubs 
usually do sell out, wristband or not.  despite the fact that 
there are usually shows worth seeing at several clubs each 
evening, it's just not possible anymore to race around from 
club to club to catch as many showcases as possible.  best 
thing to do is to pick one venue that has the most to offer, 
and get there by 9pm (wednesdays and sundays aren't as 
bad).  this may seem early (especially for austin!), but the 
showcases start at 8pm.

I'll go ahead and throw in my comments on texas bands even though I have
never even been anywhere near texas.

The Mullens lp is amazing, definitely sounds like 70's New York punk.  I
haven't seen them live yet but will get a chance to in a month and can't
wait.

I've seen Sugar Shack twice and have been blown away each time although
I gotta say Lord High Fixer which shares 2 members with Sugar Shack
blew me away live even more and I like their records a lot better too.

Many other great texas bands around too.

Subject: NH Rocks!

I spent a long weekend in NH (Portsmouth/Kittery, ME area) and I've got
to say, the Granite State ROCKS!!!  (couldn't resist!!)

Last Thursday, I saw the Donnas and the Groovie Ghoulies at the Elvis
Room in Portsmouth and it was JAM-PACKED!  The place can't hold very
many people, maybe about 175 or so, tops.  On Friday I saw Keene, NH's
own The Kirks and Boston's purist rockabilly band, the Racketeers.  It
wasn't quite as packed but both bands put on a hell of a show!

If anyone finds themselves in New England, check out Portsmouth.  It's
NH's answer to Cambridge, alot less uptight and with only one chain
store in the downtown area (the Gap, who along with Starbucks are going
for world domination).  The Elvis Room is a punk rocking coffee bar and
has become one of my favorite places to see bands play.  Across the
street is the Friendly Toast, a HUGE restaurant with all vintage decor
(each table has a different lamp on it) with a great menu that gives BIG
FOOD!  Try the spinach dip!  There's also a great, but kinda pricey,
Mexican restaurant in the downtown area (Poco Diablo) that's worth going
to, and if you cross the bridge into Kittery you not only get $39/night
motels (cheap in these here parts) but you get OUTLET STORES!

On an un-Bomp note, we left Portsmouth Saturday to drive through the
White Mountains, which was absolutely gorgeous, even when we could only
see 50 feet ahead through the snow.  Checked out a couple of thrift and
antique stores, but didn't pick anything up.

Anyone wanting to check out good thrift stores in flea markets in New
England should consider Rhode Island.  Woonsocket rules!!!  I bought
Erich a set of 21 (three must've been busted) U.S. Army glasses (shot,
juice, highball and lowball) from around the 50s or 60s for $20.  They
have little army men running around on them!  I got three (count 'em)
tiki glasses for $2.75 and a ceramic 100th Year decanter from Reno
(dated 1968) that's shaped like a slot machine for a few bucks.  One
store had, but had already sold, a red and white leather deco living
room set, that I'm sure sold for a mere pittance.

Well, this was the biggest post from me in a long time!  I wanted to
give a heads-up to two great towns that could probably use some
business!

I don't have a choice in the music that I play...none of us
do.  In fact, all radio stations play from a playlist.  We
do requests but very few.  Generally, I like the music we
play however, if you get tired of songs quickly, think about
how long it takes for those of us on the air to get tired of
them.  Believe me, it doesn't take long.  I miss the days of
playing harder rock but that's not up to me.  Radio stations
spend a lot of money on research...I mean they research
everything.  In a nutshell you have to play familiar music
because the average listener wants to hear shit that they
know.  It took me a while but I bought into it.  I have the
best job in the world so there are a lot of things that make
up for the repetition of music that as disc jockeys we must
endure.  All stations repeat songs constantly...it sucks but
I guess that's what cassettes and CD players are for.

I am pretty positive most of the people who worked on Sesame Street were NYC
intelligensia.  That 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 (3, 3, 3, let's sing a song of
threeee.  Three... Birthday... cakes...  [person falls down stairs holding
cakes]) spot is amazing, and most surprisngly, appears on the very first
episode of Sesame Street.  The late Joe Raposo wrote almost all the music
for the early episodes with Jerry Moss writing some of the lyrics.  Joe was
from a more traditional school of song and music writing and did about half
the songs for a 1973 Frank Sinatra lp.  It would not surprise me in the
slightest if they were stirctly broadway (where the show was produced, I
think).

IMO all volumes are worth having. There is great stuff from all over the
world including S.Africa! One volume is all Australia and the latest is all
US groups.
The CD is the same as volume 1.

How about the Incredible Sound Show Series. I picked up #5 (I think) which
has some interesting rarities from pre-John's Children, Artwoods etc. What
are the other volumes like compared to this. I am not that keen on later
Brit psychedelia so I don't want to fork out the $ without some idea what
the others in the series are like.

I saw the Minstrels last week at Spaceland and they were pretty good. They
have almost all new members; I think George is still there, but there are
two ex-Brian Jonestown folks (Robert the guitarist and Sophie the
tambourine French chick, of all things, now playing keyboards) and some
other girl named Jennifer also playing keyboards. They are currently based
in the Bay Area and being managed more of less by Dave Deresinski, ex-BJM.

By the way, those few of you who share my opinion that BJM are the best
band of the last 20 years may want to catch them on the upcoming tour that
begins this week and runs thru May something. The tour dates are on the
Bomp website. You won't be sorry. Even if you only like charmkin retro
garage rock, there's something there for you--though its a lot heavier than
all this Bomboras type stuff.

I agree. Lord High Fixers are amazing (just check out When The
Revolution Comes for proof!). But then again I've always been a big fan
of Tim Kerr. Big Boys, Poison 13, and Jack O' Fire were all great bands.
I read somewhere (maybe here?) that Tim's now in Italy doing production
on the new Two Bo's Maniacs album.

The Motards broke up? That sucks... always looked forward to seeing

And I hope they show up.....Luckily, I saw them in Athens last year, before
Anton got arrested on his way to Atlanta.  This year they play in Atlanta
the day after Orlando.  Here's to hoping they can make it through northern
Florida and South Georgia without another brush with John Q. Law, a manager
stealing their van or members quitting/being kicked out....  Yes, their
show is nothing short of stunning, but you've got to admit, they aren't the
best band in the business world.

lettering? It had Black Flag,Sonics,the Last,Rice University Marching

Of course,Richard Carpenter was heavily into 'ludes,so he didn't know

in a brazilian program called Flávio Cavalcanti (the type of this

country, i guess). This is interview is rare why the Cláudio and Arnaldo
don't speak on with oyher.

Other video is "Festival da Canção da TV Record, 69" the first show of
Os Mutantes in a televison.
This video is cool why the Os Mutantes gett off the stage with tomates
in the face (?!?)

And other is MPB - Maldito Popular Brasileiro - A documentary with 30"
with the complete life
of Arnaldo and OS Mutantes.

And many others.

If you are intrested? In Brazil have too 2 compilations, a tribute a
Arnaldo Baptista and Os Mutantes.
The first compilation, only in lp (yes), of 88,  is called "Sanguinho
Novo" (type "New Blood" an music of Arnaldo, 74)
This compilation is the best. The best cool and underground bands play
on this record.

Hey Kopper, its funny but I also found a copy of Searching in the
Wilderness during the weekend! I was quite excited about it as I was
looking for this record for some time now. Unfortunately I've been unable
to listen to it yet as my turntable is under repair, but it looks
like it includes some really great stuff (I've listened to some of the
tracks featured). I was wandering about who put this compilation out, as
well. I thought it might have been someone from Europe (Holland perhaps?)
due to the nature of the material and the name of the label (Muziek
Express) but apparently I was wrong if Blair's information is correct. Can
anyone else confirm it?   
By the way, my copy didn't come with a Raven Records catalog but I sure
would like to find the "Ugly Things" LPs (vols. 1-3) and "The Raven EP LP"
vol.1 and vol.3. Other Raven records that should be interesting and I'm
looking for: the "Kicks" compilation and The Innsect LP reissue.

What I find interesting about the whole TV commercials thread is that
sometimes they can be a source of income for more obscure, underground or
non-commercial artists who don't rack up large sales or chart numbers.
I'd be interested in seeing examples of bands who somehow made money from
their music even while remaining unknown to the general public and not
selling a lot of records.

Of the bands lucky enough to go this route, most of them do so not through
selling their music through TV commercials, but by getting other, more
well-known artists to either cover or sample their music on a record which
ends up selling big, thus enabling the obscure artist whose music is being
used to earn royalties off the bigger artist's sales.  

Some examples:

- - Didjits' "Killboy Powerhead" was covered by the Offspring, and when the
Offspring album went multiplatinum, Didjits leader Rick Sims not only made
a shitload of royalties but even got awarded a platinum record with his
name misspelled "Ricks Sims."  

- - The Vaselines had a very small fan base, but one of those fans just
happened to be named Kurt Cobain.  He liked them so much that he covered a
'lines song on Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged in New York" album.  

- - The Flamin' Groovies probably got a pretty decent windfall from the
sales of the CLUELESS movie soundtrack.  That album featured Cracker
covering the Groovies' "Shake Some Action."

- - The soundtrack to THE CROW featured Henry Rollins covering a Suicide
tune and Pantera covering a Poison Idea song.

- - I don't know of any actual cases, but I'm sure there are examples of
hip-hop or techno artists sampling from obscure artists and putting them
on records that ended up selling big.  Just about anything and everything
is fair game for sampling on a rap or techno record.  

Of course, in a perfect world, the Didjits, Flamin' Groovies and Poison
Idea would be getting the recognition they deserve while the hacks in
Cracker, Offspring and Pantera remained in the sports bar circuit.  But
the reality is, the general public likes watered-down crap, and REAL bands
like Didjits and Poison Idea don't sell as well as schlock like Offspring.
I dislike musicians who make lame Top Forty crap in order to sell records
just as much as anyone else here, but the corollary of that is, I don't
think that artists should have to live in poverty for refusing to water
down their music for the masses. That's why I think it's so cool for
obscure artists to make money through these not-so-well-known channels.

Personally, if I had a band, I'd much prefer to stay on an indie label yet
make a lot of money through other channels instead of becoming a "rock
star."  Don't know about you, but I think it's nice to be able to make
your rent every month and stay out of debt without being getting hounded
by autograph-seekers or paparazzi.

Of course, as I'm sure many of you already know, "fame" and "fortune"
are often completely unrelated.  Just ask TLC and MC Hammer, both of whom
filed for bankruptcy, or Collective Soul, whose record went multiplatinum
yet whose members still had to live with their parents, get by on $150 a
week, and practice in a $700/month cabin.  Except for the rented cabin and
the fact that they got to travel, they didn't live any better than I did
during my thankfully-long-gone days as a Tower Records sales clerk.
