Hi,

I was just wondering:
are there any Prisoners albums available nowadays?
The only one I have now is "Thewisermiserdemelza" on Big Beat
and I'd like to get them all.
By the way did they ever have any influence or popularity on the US garage/mod
scene ? I know there are plenty of Billy Childish maniacs out there in the new world, how about The Prisoners?

It's not as unrelated as you think! They had both Spanish and English
versions for that song, which went to 20. The visuals, in part were a
machine that had a conveyor belt the numbers rolled across and a funnel
that sucked them down. I don't know if it was ever issued and I don't have
it.

I know they had a huge influence on The Omega Men, especially on their lead

available, I think some British or German label has re-issued some on CD. I
could be wrong, but I think I saw these at the Virgin store in San

Easily remedied. Find a Terry Knight and the Pack 45. They recorded for
Lucky Eleven. Not only will you have a teaching aid, but music, too. At
least that's the way I am going to sell the idea to my wife when we have

It's a British CD. RPM have quite a lavish web site at
http://www.rpmrecords.co.uk/ -- but when I tried to access it
today to see if they do mail order themselves (I think so) it
seemed to be down at the moment. (And that's called "sad".)

"Happy Together" (White Whale WW-7114), which (I think) is
now available as a Sundazed CD. It's also on most of their
greatest hits albums, including the ancient double LP on Sire
that includes some really strange stuff by them, like covers
of Jan & Arnie's "Gas Money" and Lee Andrews & The Hearts'
"Tear Drops".

The absolute best store I've been to in Cleveland isn't a record
store, but a toy store! It's called Big Fun,and is owned by a mafia
family(or so I'm told, sure seemed like it) They buy up warehouses full of
old toys from the 50's on up and sell 'em new,and most of the stuff is
really cheap!Lots of weird off brand toys and gum ball machine toys and
some collectable stuff too.Probably about the coolest store I've ever
been to,anywhere.

Searching in the wilderness/Raven comps

It was put out by Hideout records in NYC, in about 1987 I think. It was a
one-off, no subsequent volumes.
Good luck with finding the Raven 60s comps. Very occasionally I see the odd
2nd hand copy here (London), but they hardly ever turn up. A big fave is
'Downunder Dreamtime', Aus and NZ psyche. Bobby and Laurie are highly
recommended (at least by me)....

Yup. It doesn't exist anymore AFAIK, but it was around in the 60's and
70's (and the 80's, 'cause I do seem to remember it myself.) Their label

Caught the Damned last night in St.L, it blew me away. The Capt. stole
the show, stripping down to his underwear, then putting on a dress and
throwing his underwear into the crowd. My friend, and fellow band mate,
Tim Lohmann interwiewed the capt. for the next issue of the new St.L mag,
Static Inc. When Tim went to get his copy of Machine Gun Etiquitte
signed, the sensible one bit a big chunk out of the corner of the sleeve
and spat it out. I guess you can say that he now owns a personalized
cut-out of MGE. The capt went on to wrestle with the girl selling
shirts, picking up a stool and trying to hurl it against the wall.
Wunderbar! It seems like there are two types of Damned fan, crazy punks
and spooky dork goths. Vainian was in top form as the dapper cool
frontman, the drummer filled the shoes of Scabies quite nicely. I can't
say enough, THE DAMNED ARE BACK AND I LOVE IT!

That's a good example. This was a special case, and it worked for him
because he used a studio trick to include one single extra beat so that
it technically wasn't a "sample" of the original tune. Not that Queen,
nor especially David Bowie, needed the royalties from that song, but
credit should definitely be given where it's due, especially when some
moron like Vanilla Ice rips off somebody's song (using it to help him
get rich) and gets away with it.

Chicago had a delightful store of this kind called Goodies, but I haven't
been there for 4 or 5 years and don't know if it is still extant. It was
chock full of great postcards, rubber masks, plastic jewelry, toys
galore...heaven!

The Cherokees do "Little Lover" and The Outsiders do "Won't You Listen".
These are good, but the best songs on the LP, IMHO, are by some of the
other bands, like Namelosers, Q65, The Outlaws, Cuby and the Blizzards,
and The Buzz.

Sounds like this is an 80's compilation of the magazine's releases,
then! Kind of a retrospective thing. I believe Constantine and I found
two copies of the same exact LP. Mine doesn't appear to be a reissue and
no other label name besides "musiek expres LTD." is listed on the LP.
Also, maybe the Raven catalog was included because they handled the
distribution. I'd definitely like to find some of these Raven releases
listed, so if anyone knows how to get ahold of them, let us know!

I played in Cleveland in May at a place called Sudsy Malone's. It's a
combination club and laundrymat. Because you know the kids get their clothes
dirty too.
My fondest memory of Cleveland however (beyond it's historic significance) is
walking down the main drag before the show. It was a Sunday and, past the
requisite row of tattoo parlors and record stores, was the open door to a bar
that at once would erupt with laughter and then fall absolutely silent. I was
about a block away when I first noticed the sound and, as I approached this
continued to happen a number of times. Was it stand up comedy night I
wondered? Were they picking on the town sot? No, I soon discovered that the
entire bar was completely absorbed watching the Simpson's. With such devotion
one might think they were being given a quiz after the show. I was later told
that this was one of the toughest bar's in town
and yet they took the cartoon so seriously drink's aren't served until the
commercials!
Even the toughs had a sense of humor. After that I reckoned Cleveland was O.K.

Saw the Damned last night. Great show! The Captain was in great form as
he joked with and befriended the audience and the rest of the band was
right-on and seemed to really enjoy themselves up there. Capt. Sensible
seemed seiously concerned with the fact that he couldn't find Route 66
on the way in... "We came in on 44, what did they do with 66?" They
played a long set and came back for two encores, probably because BOTH
opening bands cancelled. They did lots of their classics including
Melody Lee, Noise Noise Noise, Love Song, New Rose, Disco Man, Plan 9
Channel 7, Smash It Up, Eloise, Neat Neat Neat, and Looking At You
(where they praised the work of such bands as the MC5, Iggy & The
Stooges, and the Cowsills(?)). But they didn't play Nasty!! Oh well,
good show nonetheless. Better than I expected. It was definitely worth
the $14 I didn't have to pay to get in (membership in community radio
DOES have its priviledges).

The Donnas and Groovie Ghoulies tonight. 'Bout time we get some good
shows in this town!

Subject: Where to Find Radio Commercials

Don wrote:<< what other commercials are out there? And who recorded those
legendary
rock commercials that have gone unnamed?>>

I collect radio advertising and, I tell ya, there thousands of incredible
things to be found.

One thing to keep an eye out for are albums put out by the Radio Advertising
Bureau. The RAB released a series of LPs, starting in 1967, that feature CLIO
award winning spots. The LPs were given away free to ad agencies and radio
station programmers at conventions.

I've found a few of these and there are some great spots on them. One of my
favorites is The American Breed doing a jingle for "The Alone Phone." The
Alone Phone turns out to be part of an ad campaign aimed at getting teens to
convince their parents to let them have an extention line in their bedroom.
The jingle is great and the voice over is done by legendary DJ Dan Ingram, who
I grew up listening to on WABC. There was also a fun spot with Louis Armstrong
singing the "Schaefer is the one beer to have" jingle. Another featured the
voices of Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett hawking Circus Nuts.

One spot that I couldn't believe won an award was for a men's clothing store
in NYC called Broadstreets. The pitch was that they were a better store
because their salesmen weren't gay! The first line of copy is, "It takes one
to know one"!!!

Most radio spots were distributed on small reels of tape, usually 3", 5" or 7"
inch reels, so keep an eye out for these in the thrift store and you might
find something cool. My pal Denis found a great reel at a thrift. It was a
demo for a jingle producer/composer named Steve Karmen. This guy wrote some
very catchy stuff. His most well known jingle is probably the one that goes,
"You can take Salem out of the country but...you can't take the country out of
Salem" from the late 60's. There is one totally boss late 60's rock and roll
jingle on the demo for Devil Shake.

One of my favorite jingle singers is a woman named Trella Hart. Trella is
sorta like the Tommy Tedesco of the female voice. She must have recorded tens
of thousands of cuts. Trella works in Dallas, the home of radio jingle
industry. The musician's union pays a much higher rate to singers in Dallas
and many of the best singers located there in the 60's to
do session work. Trella mostly recorded radio station jingles for a company
called PAMS, meaning the jingles that identify the stations themselves, not
jingles for any product. One of my favorite commercial cuts that Trella sang
is a super sexy spot for 7-Up. The lyrics go, "Wet and wild/7-Up is wet and
wild."

Lots of radio spots were also pressed up on vinyl and if you are diligent
enough they turn at the thrifts and at record swaps. I found a great 12" with
a couple of spots for the Long Island Railroad a few years back. They were
sung by folkie Oscar Brand and the jingle has incredible lyrics like, "We've
got bar car types for thirsties/party cars for teens!"

A friend found a neat 7" from the early 60's that had a ton of spots with
different folks reading PSAs for National Country Music Week. Patsy Cline, Roy
Acuff, Eddy Arnold & Chet Atkins are on there as well "Country" artists like
Connie Francis and the Kingston Trio!

The Carl Perkins Box on Charly has two radio spots for the same bill, Carl
Perkins, Johnny Cash & The Tennessee Two, Roy Orbison & The Teen Kings &
Warren Smith. One is for a show in Memphis, the other in Richmond.

There is an incredible LP of PSAs called "Get Off" that came out in the early
70's. It's nothing but rock stars telling you not to shoot heroin or take hard
drugs. This thing is unfugginbelievable. Dr. John, Ringo, Frank Zappa, Bob
Weir, Alice Cooper, the cast of Star Trek, Sha Na Na, Dr. Hook, Stevie Wonder,
B.B. King, Mark Farner, Loudon Wainwright, Harry Chapin and on and on and on.
I've heard that there was a "Get Off II" but I've never seen it.

There are a couple of commercial aircheck dealers, that is guys who make money
selling old tapes of radio, who also have tapes of radio spots for sale. Tom
Konard, who runs the Aircheck Factory, has a few cool tapes of old spots for
sale. If you write him at Aircheck Acres, Wild Rose, Wisconson 54984 he'll
send you a list of stuff that he has for sale. Also look on the web for a guy
named Ed Brouder, who runs Man From Mars Productions. He has a list of
thousands of old airchecks that are for sale online. I bet he has some spots
too.

Something Weird Video has a few cassettes for sale that each have an hour of
incredible spots for all sorts of exploitation movies. They are kinda pricey
at $20 a pop, but they'll make your jaw drop when you listen to them.

There are also collectors like me who trade tapes of old spots. One good
source for hooking up with folks and seeing what kinda of stuff has turned up
is a zine called DecalcoMania. The zine is for fans of radio and there are
lots of folks who subscribe who have vast archives of radio stuff on tape. If
you write to Paul Richards at RadioPaul9@aol.com and ask he'll send you a free
issue. You could also write to the same address if there are some specific
stuff that you are looking for. Paul will put your request in the letters
column of the next issue. DecalcoMania has been coming out monthly for more
than ten years so it may not take long to get a response.

The "Love Us or Hate Us" record is on Repent. The sound quality is only
marginally good, if that. If you can find it, get the cd (or lp) called
"San Francisco's Doomed." It's 20 songs, all 100% amazing.

Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis... too much snow and cold for me, and I'm

Hey Lola,
It's called The Red Bird Story, Charly Records #264 outta London. It is, indeed, Mary Weiss -- you really gotta check it out. It's really funny. But even funnier...they've got Shadow Morton working out "Dressed In Black" on tape. You hear this really off-key "DA-DA-DA-DA duh...so soft..so warm.." -- that, my friends, is priceless! One other highlight of this 2 CD set is Tipple & The Clovers doing "Bossa Nova Baby" -- it's great!
