Subject: "Hi, this is Frank Zappa...Speed Kills!"

Guess I should also add my 2 cents to the old radio ads thread! Years ago
someone made me a tape on which he filled some extra space with a series of
spots Frank Zappa did for something called the "Do It Now Foundation," telling
kids to stay off speed. One spot starts off with Frank starting into his Suzy
Creamcheese bit except he changes the name to "Suzy Speedfreak," after which
he goes on to say, "Did you know that you have five years to live if you start
using speed today?" Another one contains the best anti-drug argument I've
ever heard in my life: "In general, this drug will make you just like your
mother and father." Then there's the one where Frank just repeats, ominously,
over and over, "You're going to die from using speed.......you're going to die
from using speed......" Great stuff. (The ads, of course, not speed!!!)

BTW, the American Breed "Alone Phone" ad is online! You can check it out at
the WABC Musicradio 77 website:
 www.musicradio77.com
It's on one of the 1968 Dan Ingram airchecks in the aircheck section of the
site, not sure which one though, but I'm sure some of you will find it.
RealAudio is required.

Now, if I could only come across some original Mexican radio ads for Los Dug
Dug's, ha ha.........

Speaking as one who grew up with Sesame Street, I want to thank everyone
who has contributed to the S.S. thread. It really took me back, in a teary-
eyed, halcyon days sort of way. I just read Ray Brazen's post about the funky
Roosevelt Franklin album and almost fell out of my chair...I owned and adored
that record too, as well as "Sesame Street Fever," Bob McGrath sings S.S.
favorites, "C is for Cookie," and a wonderful play-along-with-Bert &
Ernie record, and aw jeez, countless others. Where are they now? I fear
my mother must have carted them off to the Salvation Army long ago.

I catch S.S. every now and then and you can still see some
incredibly fantastic bits, like the "Rebel L"
song that Andrea mentioned ("that little rebel L, he cries "La, La, La"),
Smokey Robinson singing "U really got a hold on me" while a giant foam
U has him in its clutches, or Lena Horne singing the ABC song with, I
believe, Hairy Monster.

Now excuse me while I go through my third or fourth childhood.

I saw a pretty great little movie last night called "The Wanderers," sort
of an American Grafitti for the east coast greaser set. It's set in the
Bronx in 1963, and it's about teenage delinquent gang culture. It
was apparently shot entirely on location, with recognizable Bronx streets
and landmarks throughout. Pretty good use of a standard oldies soundtrack,
too...Dion & the Belmonts (par for the course considering the title),
the Four Seasons, WMCA airchecks, that sort of thing. Not terribly Bomp related, but
there's one scene that incorporates "Pipeline" in such a way that once
you see it, you'll never think of "Pipeline" as a surf song again.
Don't miss it if you're Italian, and/or from NYC & its environs.

By the way, whatever happened to Roosevelt Franklin on S.S.? He was

The movie for The Wanderers is really cool...but it was based on the
great novel by Richard Price. If you liked the movie, definitely read
the book, its less like a long rambling piece of prose and more like a
bunch of vignettes linked together (the characters are all the same, but
different chapters put different characters in the as the story's
focus).

Also of note, there's currently an oi! band out there called the Ducky
Boys, which they stole from one of the gangs in the book/movie.

"The Wanderers" has come up briefly in past BOMP discussions, and oddly
enough,
I almost bought the book, by Richard Price, Wednesday nite, but decided to
pick it up later. I believe he also wrote "The Lords of Flatbush",
"The Outsiders", etc.
The movie is an exceptionally good "retro" film - not ENTIRELY correct in
its posturing, but convincing, well-acted, costumed, great musical
soundtrack, etc. Its effort to portray the end of the greaser era, its
decline and imminent obsolescence in the face of rising folkie/hippie
culture, is quite interesting.
I think it was released about '84 - Ken Wahl sure was cute back then, as
was the HANDSOME Marvin-Gaye-lookin' dude who plays Clinton Strich -
and, at that time, the Baldies were TRULY bizarre and fearsome looking.
Of course, that look's been done to death now.

An extremely fun and highly recommended film!

The Wongs were ULTRA-COOL, ULTRA. Funny, though, that they didn't have a
Puerto Rican gang that I recall (The real sickos of the story are the
inbred-looking Irish, the Duckie Boys).

More cinematic gang fun: "The Warriors". Anyone else a fan of this?

All I know is that Rager (Untamed Youth organ player) told me the Youth
were definitely gonna tour with SCOTS this year. He just wasn't sure

Lola, I was just thinking the same thing about the lack of Puerto
Ricans, especially considering that the story is set contemporaneously
with the whole "West Side Story" period of New York history.

I love how they made the Wongs out to be these inscrutable, mysterious,
mystical martial arts guys, true precursors to the Bruce Lee/David
Carradine era.

Haven't had the pleasure of reading Richard Price's book, or of seeing
the Warriors yet, but I plan on rectifying one or both of those
situations soon.

The Outsiders was written by S.E. Hinton. Richard Price has written a bunch
of books, and I think many screenplays. I want to say that he worked on The
Grifters (movie) but I usually get details like that wrong so don't believe
me. I'm pretty sure he wrote "Clockers" though. I agree that the book The
Wanderers is definitely worth reading. (I also loved the book Fast Times at
Ridgemont High when I was in high school. Definitely better than the flick!)

YES! Beautiful slinky panther-boys in black turtlenecks who actually
materialize from and vanish into the tall weeds - VERY Bruce Lee (whom I
consider one of the hottest men who ever lived). Forget David Carradine!
Bruce was supposed to get "Kung Fu" but the network wouldn't risk using an
actual Chinese. SICK. I guess they thought Carradine looked
vaguely Asian - he didn't even know any martial arts. Sorry, fellas if
this too girltalky for you.

"The Warriors" is GOOOD - AND has the distinction of having been yanked
from distribution because it might foment actual gang violence. One of
the few good films of the late 70s, to my mind. Regrettably, its star,
Michael Beck, blew it by next appearing in "Xanadu"!!! YIKES!!

They are all grim as hell, and a bit formulaic after a while - of the 4 or
5 I've read, "The Killer Inside Me" stands alone. Read David Goodis, too,
if you haven't already! He isn't Chandler, but somewhat more lyrical than

I just heard a story I'm trying to get some info on, apparently when Jim
McGuinn was working with an Indonesian guru, the guru said he needed a new
name that would resonate better in the universe. The name needed to begin
with an "R," so Jim submitted a list of around 8-10 names. (This much is
pretty much accepted). But the story I heard is that one of the names that
Jim submitted was cartoon character Roger Ramjet. That name was what the
guru picked.

So Jim became Roger McGuinn. Not willing to accept the Ramjet part.

I also heard that Jim actually calls himself Jim these days, not Roger.

So, Byrdsaholics, my only Byrds connection was Mike Clarke, who, is
currently deceased. Is this story true, the friend swore up and down that
it was the case.

Don

PS- next I'll tell you a story about how this guy from my college got a song
of his picked up on a Levis commercial in the UK and it pushed his band to
#5(!), but that's only slightly more believable than Roger Ramjet McGuinn.

Oh yes. the guys who didn't shoot Cyrus but got blamed for doing it... Baseball Furies and the immemorable "come out to playyy"chant!!
Warriors was quite notorius film here when I was growing up.
Some jerk in Stockholm, Sweden got so excited about this film,
that he threw a molotov's cocktail into a bus in Stockholm! The result of this was , that the film wasn't shown at all in Finland since it obviously was bad influence on the youth. So in early 80's the only way to enjoy this Walter Hill masteropiece was to get a hold of

Subject: non-bomp-related: how do you folks access the web?

I'm sorry if this isn't directly Bomp-related, but I'm putting up a
music-oriented web site - an online 'zine, if you will - and I want to
know whether I can design for Netscape or IE 3 or whether I should make my
site accessible for people with slow connections, not-so-sophisticated
browsers and low screen resolution.

So what I want to know is, how do you folks access the web?

My specific questions are:

1) Do you access the Web through Netscape, Internet Explorer, or the AOL
browser? And which browser version do you use? (If you don't know the
answer to the latter question, at least tell me whether or not your
browser supports frames.)

2) How good is your modem connection? Or do you access the web via an
ISDN or T1?

3) Do you use a Macintosh or do you use a PC with Windows?

4) What's your screen resolution? Is it 640x480, or is it higher?

Bottom line: considering that my target audience will be, basically,
you, should I design it so it's viewable for folks with slow connections
and primitive browsers and small screens? Or can I get away with making
a nice-looking site with lotsa graphics, borderless frames, etc. which
needs at least a 28.8 connection and Netscape or IE version 3 and looks
best on a 800x600 screen?

If you think this is off-topic, you can email me privately. All feedback
is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
John

Deke (Dickerson of Untamed Youth) says they're very definitely in
negotiation for that. No idea of tour dates as of last week...

Recently I got re-single of Beefeaters' "Please let me love you/Don'T Be Long".
It is (written) Erektra Records EKSN45013.
But I wonder whether it is real official reissue or bootleg.
Does anyone know about it??

Hitomi,
this single was recently booted, so chances are it is the boot. I actually
have the real thing, I found it in 1994 in Ohio for 30 cents, what a deal. It
is an extremely tough record to find so my guess is you got the boot.

My handy Psychotronic movie guide sez '79. I saw it at the late
Marbro drive in in Chattanooga. It was a double date and I was the
only one in the car that liked it. I knew that I had to find a better
class of people to hang out with.

Doesn't Richard Price have some sort of connection to The Dictators
and Blue Oyster Cult?
