The website I access is at www.bigtakeover.com. It gives you a sample of the 'zine contents.
Their address is The Big Takeover, 249 Eldridge St. No. 14, New York, NY 10002. A yearly
subscription is something like $12. It's a fat (not "phat," although it may be that too if I
understand the vernacular), passionate 'zine that's been around since the early '80s. It's the
only fanzine I've seen since Trouser Press (a tear wells...) that understands the glory of the
Undertones, and that's good enough in my book.

Yes! and very cheaply too. The Someloves only recorded one album called
Something Or Other. They also had a vinyl only single on Citadel. Mushroom
records here in Australia recently re-released Something Or Other along with
its whole back catalogue for only $10 (Aust). You should be able to purchase
it through any Australian record company quite easily.

May I also recommend the rest of Dom Mariani's back catalogue. Before he was
in the Someloves, Dom fronted the Stems who originally were a garage styled
band but also did quite a few pop influenced songs, especially later in
their career. They released one allbum called At First Sight Violets Are
Blue and there is a best of CD called Buds which has all their early singles
not on the album as well as a few unreleased songs.

Doms current band DM3 have been around for a while and have just released a
new album called Rippled Soul. They have two other albums 1 times, 2 times 3
Red Light and Road To Rome. Bomp has also released a best of CD called Dig
It The Most, which contains material from the first two albums but nothing
off their last. I'm sure a lot of people on this list would agree with me in
that all these albums are must haves.

Dom also used to be in the Summer Suns. Their stuff is a lot harder to find
and most of it on vinyl. They released one CD called Bed Bugs a few years ago.

Darryl Mather, who also was in the Someloves, is now in a band called The
Orange Humble Band who recently released a highly acclaimed album called
Assorted Creams through Half A Cow records. The band also features members
of the Posies. They do a version of Can't Get What You Want which is also on
the DM3 album Road To Rome.

Hope this is of some help. If you have any other queries please don't
hesitate in calling me or if you like you can contact Dom personally at;

DM3@trinix.com.au (this is the correct address - I think I've sent this
message with the wrong email address for DM3!)

Besides the Something or Other LP, The Someloves also had a 12" EP out.
There were actually a couple singles, one of which was recorded in '85 or
so. The Someloves really began as a side project while Dom was still in
The Stems.

And, like Neal, I recommend just about anything Dom Mariani's ever done.

At the movies over the weekend I saw a trailer for a new movie called
"Rushmore." The opening (and dominant) music clip was the Creation's
"Making Time." Looked like it might be a half-decent movie, too.

And how about those trendsetting Insomniacs?! First they started doing
"Tom Tom," then the Prissteens added "How Does It Feel To Feel" to their
set, then that trailer.

I imagine www.crypt.de would have these for the cheapest, although with
the $4 postage you may be tempted to buy 4 items. Doesn't make much
sense to buy a $7.50 record and then pay $4 to have it sent.

It all comes down to how many comps you may want to have. If you don't
have many, the Nuggets set is the smart choice for a one-stop collection
with great notes. Moreover, some of the great Pebbles cuts appear here
too. None of the Back From The Grave cuts were selected for the set (as
far as I know).
Pebbles corrected a lot of their sound quality problems on the CDs, which
seem the way to go. I'd consider very few of these songs "pop", but the
songs here definitely feel more "crafted" than the Back From The Grave
cuts. My favorite is actually vol. 10 on CD, which you could sample and
not repeat yourself with any Nuggets cuts.
The Back From The Graves don't give you much variety, but if three-chord
wildness is your thing, this is the series that delivers. Unless you
don't have a turntable, go for the lps.

I've heard good things about "Rushmore"--namely, that it's one of the
best films about adolescence ever made. I tend to fall for hyperbole
and then get disappointed by my less-than-impressed reaction to the
actual product, but I'll keep an open mind, especially if it's
got a decent soundtrack.

I had an encounter with unexpected coolness this weekend myself
while watching "Shine," the movie about the Australian classical
pianist who went nuts. There's one brief scene that takes place
in a London nightclub, ca. '67 (when he was a student at the Royal
College of Music), in which you get to see scantily-clad showgirls
gyrating to the Troggs' "With a Girl Like You."

If you can still get it, I think that the box set of Garage Punk
Unknowns is also a really great "starter" comp. Although some of my
faves from the records aren't included in the box it's still a cool
selection of some out and out punkers and some more jangly, melodic
stuff.

- -- I love it and have been listening to it for a long, long time. I have
even played in a *garage* band (whatever that means??)!! Look, I'm not
trying to start a flame, Pete, but like all forms of music there's good
and bad. I love UK psych, euro stuff, soul, jazz, folk-rock, R'n'B....
but not all of it. How can you possibly say you bloody well either like
garage or not!!!??
I really enjoy US fuzzy-pop, folk-punk and acid-punk, but it all has to
be well produced, well sung and played. Perhaps in your books this isn't
garage??!!
The Basement Walls and the ('I Didn't Have To LOve Her') Outcasts are
great musicians and singers. Some, and I do say some, of the bands on
BFTG and T.Shutdowns are awful. Those fucking records you talk of are
only expensive cuz so few were printed. The plain fact is that they are
bad!! Nobody wanted them in the first place. We've already had the
debate on dealers setting high prices from their own price guides!!

- -- I think not.
I say for a 40+ year old you have an infantile mentality!! Go back to
the playground Mr High'n'Mighty.
Read mine and Paul's mag Shindig, you'll find plenty of garage within!

Last I heard, he was still looking for a publisher to finance it. He did a
mini collector's tour a few years back and went around to a lot of collectors
homes to invade their collections & copy down wax numbers, labels, etc. The
book should be very impressive and the most complete and accurate book to date
when it finally comes out. I don't think a date has been set yet, but I'll
try to find out any info.

Blair--
Your points are well-taken & definitely accurate. I'm not crying sour
grapes for myself b/c we're newer than new. It takes LOTS of
advertising & even a few 7"s out to get ANY notice, but NYC is a
different beast than other places in the country. I DO come from the
land of few shows (IN) & I did, at that time, go to absolutely anything
even remotely interesting, travelling a few hours usually to Cincinnati
or Chicago or Louisville to do it. I guess I've just lived the
extremes. But having toured, I SHOULD know better & thank my lucky
stars I have plenty of shows to choose from these days. NYC is a
connection town bigtime, which is why a band like The Prissteens gets
the shows they do. You may like them; I do not. Regardless, I feel
there are a lot of other bands who deserved to play w/ The Real Kids b/c
The Prissteens already did. But I also know that, at least the first
time around, John Felice specifically requested to play w/ them. So
kudos to them. I can't touch that. But then again, my old band got to
play w/ Thee Headcoats/The Makers in DC, Philly, & Boston b/c I vaguely
knew Vic Mostly, while I imagine there were probably local bands cursing
us for commandeering the covetted spots. So fair is fair, right? Maybe
it's all in my imagination, but I just see the bills that happen on the
Left Coast & about clubs that specifically concentrate on
garage/garage-punk/surf/whatever shows, & it sounds like they pack 'em
in. Bands like The Makers have specifically told me that the West Coast
is way more happenin'. Maybe I'm only hearing about the good shows.
I'm sure there are probably a shitload more that turn out like most of
the garage shows in NYC. But it's not for lack of effort that NYC seems
limp-wristed & spandex-clad. I know that Todd Abramson tries at Acme,
but no one seems to be going there. Maxwell's is kickin' again, &
that's great. Todd/Telstar & the Norton crew do a lot of good things.
Mostly, I'm just being snide about "the scene" b/c that's what paying
out the ass to play in a rock'n'roll band in a city where the cost of
living is so freakin' high can do to a person. It's all for fun, &
that's what it is, most of the time. But you're right, advertising is
the key, so shameless as that can be, I do & shall. I thank you & all
other Bompers for whatever support you may be able to give...

And let me add...
THE EASY LIVIN' can be seen at
Backstage/Black Cat in D.C. on Wed., Jan. 20
Upstairs @ Nick's in Philly, PA on Thurs., Jan 21
Cyclone Room/Coney Island High in NYC on Fri., Jan. 22

P.S. Blair--send me your address off-list & I'd be glad to send you a
tape!

It was a great show, Devil Dogs-wise! I too recall when they would play
for no cover or barely any (those were also the days when you could come
& go at will, buy a beer around the corner, drink it right it front of
the club, then go back in--alas, were it not for Guiliani & Trigger...).
They were as good as I've ever seen them. I forgot actually how amazing
they used to be. The only things that have changed: Steve's lost more
hair, gotten a bigger gut & grown a Jackie Gleason mustache, & Dave Ari
Turetsky is back in the fold. Rumor has it that they're back together,
but they deny it. But they also denied at their Halloween show in
Philly that they were doing a New Year's Eve show in NYC. So anyway,
they were amazing! AMAZING! Andy has more charisma than anyone I've
ever seen on stage. He kills me. Unfortunately, after nostalgically
thinking it was great that the crowd was so nuts for them again, they
killed me too; & by the time The Devil Dogs went off, I had to get the
hell out of that violent, little sweatbox. Since Trigger allows no
reentry to his club, I missed The Plungers (who had to go on after) &
The Candy Snatchers, though I hear their set was marred by technical
difficulties. What else is new? Oh, their album is! The new Candy
Snatchers kicks ass. Ok, enough from me...

When Alan Roy owned the place (then known as the Continental Divide) it was
much more fun. First of all, the dinosaur theme was upbeat and cool.
Secondly, you could go in and out at will. And, thirdly, it was free.
Absolutely free. Starting in October of '88, The Senders played every
Monday night for two months straight, then took a month off, then back on
for 2 months, etc. They'd invite guest bands to open and it was quite the
scene. We actually *looked forward* to Monday nights!!! The months that the
Senders (who'd reformed that year) were not playing, other bands hosted...
The Devil Dogs, The Waldos, DaWillys, etc. I probably spent almost every
Monday night for a couple years at that club.

Such is life...

I'd have to agree. The only suggestion I can make to bands trying to get
going around here is to find groups that you actually like and try and do
shows with them. Sometimes bands are able to build their own scenes and
then, when they end up on a bill with some bands that they *don't* usually
play with, the fans of the other bands get into it more 'cuz they see other
people enjoying it. They wonder what the fuss is about. Let's face it, most
people are more likely to give a band a chance if they think other people
already like them.

> which is why a band like The Prissteens gets
>the shows they do.
Probably true. Of course, to be fair about it, they *have* been around a
couple years now. They didn't exactly start off getting the big shows...
rather, they played the Lakeside Lounge. Of course, that whole connection
is a good part of what helped them... The Hound, Jim Marshall, runs the
Lakeside and a couple Prissteens work there. And Jim manages the band. He's
got tons of contacts. So, yes, they've got the connections, but they had to
do something, at least, to start.
In essence, though, I agree. Some bands get crowds because of what they've
done before (which I feel is valid, at least for awhile) and others because
they hang out with certain people (something I may not like, but it's a
fact of life.)

>is way more happenin'. Maybe I'm only hearing about the good shows.
>I'm sure there are probably a shitload more that turn out like most of

It depends on the band... and the current cycle. At various points, I've
seen garage shows packed. (Of course, I think the best attendance was in
the mid-80s, but I like the variety on today's scene better. But that's a
whole 'nother subject.) Put together the right show in NYC and the place is
jammed.

> But it's not for lack of effort that NYC seems
>limp-wristed & spandex-clad.
OK... who's wearing spandex? I hope Tom Jorgenson isn't gonna pull off his
postal uniform at the next Neckbreakers' show and show off his spandex.
AAAUUUUUGGHHHH!

> I know that Todd Abramson tries at Acme,
Actually, he's not doing Acme any longer. He needs the time for Maxwells.

>but no one seems to be going there. Maxwell's is kickin' again, &
>that's great.
Extremely... especially for those of us Jersey-side. :-)
And he's bookin' some pretty great stuff, too.

>Mostly, I'm just being snide about "the scene" b/c that's what paying

Take a subway to my suburb sometime. We've got trees and all that kinda
thing. And, if you look hard enough, you can find a big apartment for you
and a couple friends for $1100 or $1200. (And, where I am, the buses to the
city run all day and, uh... all of the night.) Oh yeah, and you can park on
the streets without worrying... and rehearsal space is cheaper than NYC.
Or, if you get lucky and find a house to rent (me and a couple friends had
a 3 Bedroom, complete with basement, backyard, and 1 car garage a couple
years back for $1260), you can practice in the garage... or basement.
