My two cents to the Blair and Chris discussion:

Chris is right: Who you know is the biggest factor for getting shows and
just getting ahead in general as a band. First, call someone up and say "my
band such and such are touring and.." then call again and say "Hey, this
is such and such, I'm a friend of (place famous band or connected person
here) and they told me you could help us with a show" and compare the
response. Oh, and Corey and Ryder from Nashvile Pussy will also tell you
that putting on the sexy voice works when calling promoters too. New York
City seems to be especially cold unless you're already part of the
in-crowd. I imagine L.A. is twice as worse. Small towns are probably more
laid back and down to earth 'cause they're hungry (like Chris mentioned
about Indiana). However, all of us, connected or not do the same for our
"friends" in almost any situation, right?

Blair, i've always respected your intelligence and objectiveness in the
way you approach topics as well as your helpful attitude (although to be
honest I think sometimes you talk too much but that's like the pot
calling the kettle black isn't it). I'm curious, have you ever
booked/promoted any shows or been in a band yourself? I think you should
try the former if you have the time. Perhaps you could do better
than say Mr. Weiss, esp seeing how into the scene you are.

Cool moments in movies-

Yeah "Shine" has the Troggs and check out this Scottish movie "Small
Faces". While it has nothing to do with the band of the same name the story
takes place in 60's Scotland and there's a cool pub scene with a band
playing a Kinks song.

The Creation really were ahead of their time. It's a pity that it took
them so long to "break", what now with official re-releases, soundtrack
appearances (and not to mention being covered by Boney M, and by the way,
who was the female modern pop-r & b girl group that covered the Small
faces "Itchycoo Park"? Their version was equally as insipid and dripping
of that dreadful syrupy modern tinny pop flavor that the aforementioned
lame version of a cool song had?).

Please let us know if "Rushmore" is actually a good movie. What's it
about anyway?

To the person who asked about Back From The Grave and Pebbles, where are
you writing from? If you only can afford one comp. get BFG #8, double
album or one cd. It's the most consistent full out 60's punk attack
in the series. Or get vol 1 or 2 of the Essential Pebbles cd which has a
little more variety but is also pretty straight ahead. Otherwise vinyl of
either can be found for real cheap. Any BFG would do but perhaps the
first 3 are the best. For Pebbles, 1,2 and 5 are your safest bet.
HOWEVER, my personal fave garage comp is "Songs We taught the Fuzztones"
which you can get, vinyl or cd from Bomp mailorder. It's all classic and
the perfect mix, from The Sonics to Bo Diddly to Kenny & the Kasuals to
"The Green Slime" theme song. i'm not really into the Fuzztones but man
they had great choice in covers.

OUCH! (Almost makes me not want to answer... ;-)

 I'm curious, have you ever

> than say Mr. Weiss, esp seeing how into the scene you are.
I'll start with the latter question. I've thought about starting
bands for years. Came really close about 4-5 years ago, but driving from
Rutherford to Brooklyn every week became a pain in the neck. Besides, my
organ playing skills are, ummm... mediocre.
Booked/promoted shows... the occasional benefit is all. Every once
in awhile, I've been asked by people at certain clubs if I'd be interested
in doing a night every month, but have so far declined. Why? Well... for
one thing, I've always hated being forced to be in a certain place on a
certain night. Also, being responsible for the business aspects of a show
can take away some of the fun. I prefer to be up front going nuts, not
worrying about whether things are going right or not backstage. Perhaps I
would've done things differently in a smaller town.
Maybe that's why I do the fanzine, etc... it's a way of being
involved without having to devote time during the shows that I enjoy.
(And, no, I'm not one of those people who sits there taking notes during
the show; tho' I will take set lists many times.)

For what it's worth, I *agree* with Chris that it's easier to get
shows around here if you've got connections... I just think over time one
can make connections, too.

as far as 60s garage punk goes these are the BEST...no contest!
Evan<

I think the original thread was started by someone new to the list, and
if you stay on, Shannon, you'll find those who's opinions lie closer to
your own, and those maybe less so. You may even be witness to bickering
over who's tastes are better (but I'll tell you right now, mine are the
best because I'm the cultivated sort).
People into punk, the Ramones, the Stooges 1st album, etc. tend to cite
Back From The Grave as their favorite comp series. Others feel that
although there are many great cuts there-in, there's a lot of monotony
and mediocrity as well. Personally, my own vision of Hell would be a
place where they played the Rat's Revenge single (BFTG 1) over and over
again. Others may find this heaven.
Pebbles contains a lot of cuts that are out and out classics, going on to
be covered by many revival bands and finding there way onto Rhino
compilation boxed sets. But, yes, they include psych, and if you stay
away from the series for this reason you miss out on too many good songs.
But if you, unlike others, are able to digest more than three chords per
song, then dive headlong into this series.
Perhaps you may be figuring out you'll have to get both series for your
collection.
Guess what? The Nuggets box has psych too!
Gotta drop my morning tabs,

Dan

I assume you like Jack Nitzche (spell?) on his own with the likes of "The
Lonely Surfer". I reinforce Bob Crewe as a "wall of sound" guy. There is
also Shadow Morton who produced the Shangri-Las and The Vagrants among
others. Finally, there is Joe Meek. He may not be deliberately trying to
ape Spector but he sure created his own "wall of sound".

WALKER BROTHERS! WALKER BROTHERS! WALKER BROTHERS!

I cannot emphasize them enough.

Rob, go directly to Other Music right now and get "Take it Easy
with the Walker Brothers," "Portrait," and "Images." If you
can't spare that much dough, "After the Lights Go Out" is
the best "greatest hits" comp. There's a cheaper greatest hits
comp called "The Walker Brothers Anthology" on One Way that
should set you back only 10 bucks, but once you hear it,
believe me, you're gonna want the entire oeuvre.

Scott possessed the most beautiful baritone in the business.
Trust me, you won't regret it!

There is also Sonny & Cher to be had (I Got You Babe), Bono worked with
Spector. I always thought that "Sally Go Round the Roses" by the Jaynetts
(produced by Abner Spector, no relation) seemed like his work. Also
"Oo-Chang-A-Lang" by the Blue Orchids (Girls in the Garage, Vol. 1 CD) is
very reminiscent of his sound.

You are in luck! I have volumes 3, 4 and 5 of the french stuff, plus the
english one with Les Sinners. Will follow-up off-list. Just be aware that
some of this is pretty sappy pop and not rockin' from beginning to end.

I'm working on a new edition of Paisley Brainbolts (Marc Coulavin and my

There are a lot of songs on those CD's I don't have. They must be the

but all the other bands are the bands he produced.

with the Walker Brothers," "Portrait," and "Images." If you
can't spare that much dough, "After the Lights Go Out" is
the best "greatest hits" comp. There's a cheaper greatest hits
comp called "The Walker Brothers Anthology" on One Way that
should set you back only 10 bucks, but once you hear it,
believe me, you're gonna want the entire oeuvre.
  >>
Yeah Deena!!,
I second the Walker Bros. motion! I've been listening to them a lot
lately especially the Portrait lp. I was really jazzed that in Vegas there was
a radio station that played only Sinatra, Elvis, Tony Bennett, Tom
Jones......and yes the Walker Bros. (They even played "I just don't
understand" Ann Maragret)
the perfect station for Vegas. Tony

I should have added that Scott was a session bass player in L.A.
during the formative years of his career, and apparently he hung
out quite a bit at Gold Star Studios. He didn't play on any of
Spector's sessions, but did do some kind of go-fer work or something
(it's not too clear exactly, but it's discussed a bit in "A Deep
Shade of Blue," the Scott biography) and was able to observe the
master at work. He picked up a lot of pointers on the proper way
to layer instrumentation to get the W.O.S., which he was then
able to pass on to his future Walkers producers & arrangers.

I'm on the Scott Walker mailing list and some people there are
ultra-fanatics who balk at any comparisons between the Walker
Bros. and the Spector sounds. According to them, W.B.
music is infinitely more expressive, emotive, intricate, and
sophisticated than, say, the Righteous Brothers. While I
do hear W.B. records as having a clearer mix, I don't *find*
a lack of emotion in the Spectral stuff. I love Bill Medley's
voice just as much as I do Scott's, only in a grittier way.

Squeaky, that was (is?) probably one of the problems with them!
Everytime they played a cover, I felt like they butchered it. They were
better off playin' originals.

OK now it's time to lose all that extra weight we gained during the last

Kalani Wipeout (Original Surfaris or Surf Teens or??)

Killer Joe (Kingsmen+Rivieras)

Lend me yer comb (Beatles)

Little Bit O'Soul (Music Explosion)

Little Lover (Hollies+Cherokees)

I'm busily looking up our internal catalog numbers for some of the Grammy
nominees that were announced earlier today, when I came across this:

Best Metal Performance
Fried Chicken And Coffee
Nashville Pussy
Track from: Let Them Eat Pussy

Haven't come across any other even-vaguely-bompish nominations yet, but
I'll keep you posted. The first thing I checked was the box set category,
figuring that Nuggets would have to be in there. Well, silly me, I forgot
myself for a second. This is the Grammys, after all -- no Nuggets.

Subject: Generation X

I have been searching for some early Gen X stuff and any help would be
appreciated.

Are there any early Generation X demos that exist? Bottom line, I am looking
for a copy of the song (I believe) "Walking in the City". I have only heard
it from the Punk Rock Movie, where they played it live. This was before Mark
Laff joined the band so I guess it was from around Feb. 1977. I have the
Chiswick sessions and BBC, but I think where this might show up would be on
some garage recording from late 1976 and who knows if it even exists.

I also asked Greg about this one;
<<do you have any idea if copies of any kind exist of the songs "I Need You"
or "You Don't Want My Name"? I have that live CD, "Stooges Live '71". The
recording quality is so bad, but nevertheless the power of the songs comes
across. But I would really love to hear these tunes in better form.>>

He suggested that these were probably riffs that were worked into later tunes.
Any ideas on what tunes they might be?

Thanks,
Joe Pach

Can't agree with this. I think they nailed 1-2-5, Cinderella, 13 Women,
Human Fly and Bad Little Woman almost perfectly. They had a few that
didn't work quite as well, but I think their choice of cover material has
always been great.
