Hi all Bompers...

well, I was just wondering if you're aware of a useful booklet released a
couple of months ago. It's called "COMPHELLNATION - a guide to Killed by
death, Bloodstains and other '77-'84 rare punk compilations".
It's an index of compilations showing sleeves, bands and tracks listing.
Well, it's focused on punk, so no garage, but I guess some of you could be
interested.

My first song of '99? (ok, I'm late...) The Ramones - I wanna be sedated
(played by some dj at a punk rock party). The first song * I * actually put
on in 1999 should be "I wanna be loved" by The Heartbreakers (not 100%
sure, anyway...).

Ok, that's all.

Bye from Italy!

Andrea

They had hits with both, at least regionally. Love-Itis was on the LP
"Hotline" (I think, I don't have this LP) "Love Stinks" as well as
"Centerfold" were much bigger hits for them what with MTV exposure and all.
The entire J Geils catalog on Atlantic was re-released as a box set by Rhino a
few years back.

OK, since I asked the dang question in the first place, it's time for me to
respond to "what was the first song you played in '99?"...It has taken me
so long to answer, because I kept forgetting the title. But it's this:
Expo 80-Rolling Space, off the UP! PYSCHO MELLOW Comp.
So, that's one resolution fulfilled!

Salut
Pussy-Cat started out as singer for the all-girl band (the only
one in France) called Les Petites Souris (The Little Mices). They had
one EP. As Pussy Cat, she made, I think, 4 EPs and a couple of singles,
all re-released on one CD, Magic records. I was at the Paris record fair
in October and Pussy-Cat was there! In person! Looking pretty good for
someone that's probably 54! Jacqueline Taieb is from Algeria or
Morocco. 7 heures du matin was her first 45. She made 2 eps and one
LP that only came out in Canada, which means it's hyper-collectable in
France (i.e. I should have kept the extra copies I had 2 years ago. Now
I have to pay more for them than I sold them for!!!) Jacqueline
actually continued into the 70s and 80s, but I've never trusted her
output in those decades. There is no CD re-ish of her stuff, apart from
appearances on Girls in the Garage, Ils sont fous Ces Gaulois and Ultra
Chicks. BONUS NOTE: It can now be revealed: Jacqueline Taieb will be
the cover girl for ULTRA CHICKS vol 4, subtitled YÉ YÉ GIRLS !!!!!!

rumour to keep other people from re-issuing Quebec 60s music, of which

I agree the Walker Brothers have a Phil Spector sound. That's the first
thing I thought when I bought the greatest hits....but I could see that
Walker list buzzing with a purist furor, going "they do not have the
Spector Sound-waaahhhhhhhhhh."
They're worse than jazzbos, I tell ya'!

I was on that Scott Walker mailing list in 1997. I chose not to get back
on it when I came back on line because back then, they were pretty
fascistic and small-minded. It's a well-documented factoid that Scott
worshiped Frank Sinatra and Jack Jones (though, much to my own horror, I
think Scott has a vocal quality eerily similar to Andy Williams!?!---anyone
else hear that?)...so I dropped a news update about Frank's
then-condition(copied to this list, the exotica list and Scott's list)...I
was flamed so hard for being off-topic! I mean, I love that Scott, but
can't we all just get along? Scott is one of what I call my "Holy Blonde
Triumverant", which includes Scott, Keith Relf and Brian Jones...and I like
brunettes!

Yes, go ahead, tell all that I am new to list! :-) Actually, I am and
you are correct there are those whose opinion lies closer to mine and
those that don't. What i am looking for is something compeletely
hammond driven, almost poppy but not too obnoxious or tiresome.

By the time these suggestions stop coming, i think i will be able to
afford quite a bit!

<You may even be witness to bickering
over who's tastes are better (but I'll tell you right now, mine are
the best because I'm the cultivated sort).>

Of course everyone's own taste are superior? who do you think they
are? Once again, i do acknowledge the fact that people tell me what
they like according to the type of music they usually go for..but i
need objective, people! Actually, all this is quite helpful and helps
me become more familar with the people on the list and what they like
and dislike!

<Pebbles contains a lot of cuts that are out and out classics, going
on to be covered by many revival bands and finding there way onto
Rhino compilation boxed sets. But, yes, they include psych, and if
you stay
away from the series for this reason you miss out on too many good
songs.
But if you, unlike others, are able to digest more than three chords
per song, then dive headlong into this series. Perhaps you may be
figuring out you'll have to get both series for your collection.
Guess what? The Nuggets box has psych too!

I don't know about the motto, but the were in "The Girl Can't Help It". I
have video and film footage of them and the records do not do them justice.
Even on the weakest songs, they put on a show unparalleled! For all of
you "Hairspray" watchers, I even saw them do the Bug while they were
singing "Rockin' is Our Business". Truly one of the best stage acts I have
seen from that era.

I am also quite certain that Moparlary meant to say disc, too.

That's so ridiculous! I bought the original copy last year for 15$ in
Montréal! Now, the original costs as much as the re-issue! highly
over-priced...

I knew this was a cue for me... I'm still recovering from New Year's to tell
you the truth! And the freezing weather here doesn't help.

Well, my partner and I got there after the first band played. The Vendettas
were on, and contrary to my expectations, they failed to excite that night.
Something just wasn't there, although I could still hear that strummy
Subsonics-style sound. Maybe they're better under different circumstances, I
don't know. It wasn't that exciting, so we walked around to the adjacent
clubs to which revelers had admission to as well as part of the $10 ticket.

For minimalist sloppy rockabilly I'll take Los Marauders! Are they still
around?

The Hate Bombs were amazing as usual, counting off the New Year's and
beginning with Auld Lang Syne. The club passed out free champagne, but I
should have been drunker. They hit us with a lot of their hits during what
seememd to be a short set. Yes, "Go Go Gorilla" was there too. And Aaron
Jarvis of the Aarontones guested on "Have Love Will Travel."

All the Bombs sing at different times, including Ken, the drummer. The
multitalented Mick Crowley wowed us with his skills on guitar, harp and Ace
Tone keyboard. I think Ace Tone was a forerunner of Roland, maybe some of
you keyboard experts can fill us in. Might be a good substitute for a
Farfisa or Vox. By the way I am looking for an organ so let me know if you
have a line on one for $500 or under!

They looked very sharp, all dressed in black that night. One thing they do
well is jump and sway in unison. There was a lot of dancing going on, but
the Bombs had to lecture an overly frisky twister whom club staff later
ejected. At various points people, including many pretty go-go girls got up
on stage and on the speakers to jump and cavort to the Bombs' infectious
tunes. All that dancing and audience participation makes you feel really
good about them and wonder how they do it. A true sign of greatness.

Two years ago they asked me to sing the Shadow's Of Knight's "Gonna Make
You Mine" with them. I thought they meant the SOK's similarly titled "I'm
Gonna Make You All Mine," so I started singing that one, but no one seemed
to notice. I was very drunk and stumbled over their guitar cords knocking
them out. I also flung a number of lit M-80s around the club - I didn't do
it this time. It was a musical disaster but tremendous fun.

The Hate Bombs are a must for Halloween in Vegas as well as Cave Stomp '99.

Nationally, Love-Itis wasn't a hit. And Love Stinks was from 1980--MTV
didn't exist yet, did it?

"Cowabunga" is something that surfers used to yell while surfing. I looked
in two slang dictionaries and they both said it came from Australia in the
early 60s.

Mainly a producer. He wrote and produced most of the Four Seasons hits, and
he had a studio group called the Bob Crewe Generation that had one big hit,
"Music to Watch Girls By."

I think so too (was listening to their great "My World Fell Down" the
other day) but I don't think they actually recorded the song themselves,
another brit band did but can't remember which one.

I love Spector but to me Meek is the ultimate producer. As far as I
know, Spector (almost?) only produced "pop" stuff (please correct me if
I'm wrong but to be clear girl groups are pop to my ears & the Righteous
Bros & the Ramones w/Spector too... Ike & Tina Turner were a lil'
different it's true but if there're more, please let me know) while Meek
went from MOR (George Chakiris) to the wildest punk (Crawdaddy
Simone!!!).

I'm very disappointed that this thread didn't go anywhere. I was hoping to
learn about small, rabid groups of bossa nova fans in northern Arizona or a
boogie woogie subculture in New England. The only Northwestern oddity I can
think of has died down considerably, but when I was a kid in the 60s and
early 70s, the biggest sporting event of the year as far as the Seattle area
was concerned was not the World Series or the Super Bowl, but the yearly
unlimited hydroplane races the first Sunday in August. Hundreds of
thousands of people would fill the shores of Lake Washington (and the lake
itself) to watch drivers such as Bill Muncey and Dean Chenoweth race in
boats such as the Miss Bardahl, the Atlas Van Lines, and the Miss Budweiser,
and many more would watch at home as all three network affiliates broadcast
it live all day. Kids would make little wooden hydroplanes and drag them
behind their bicycles.

The hydroplanes still race at a number of spots around the country (notably
the Great Lakes), and the races on Lake Washington still draw a lot of
people, but it's not like it was--only one station broadcasts them now. I
personally am not much of a fan, I just always thought it was cool that we
were so weird up here. As time goes by, regional differences tend to fade
away, I guess (but obviously not all of them).

Read about them in Nick Tosches UNSUNG HEROES OF ROCK AND ROLL.

Then find the CD "They Rock, They Roll, The Swing". It does rock, roll,
and swing.

Also, Deke Dickerson covers The Treniers "Poontang" on his new LP.
With a spoken intro by Claude Trenier.
