I've got all of 'em that came out here in North America as far as I know
(still waitin' for #10 and #13). Pretty good stuff all around, but my
faves are #4 (the Go-Go) and #7 (the Backyard Patio). Also the CD version
of #1 and #2 (Garage and Barn) is a good value 'cuz you get both on one
disc. The sound quality is fair, but perhaps not as good as the new
Teenage Shutdown series. For more specifics, check out back issue #9 of
Feline Frenzy Teen 'Zine.

I know you were asking about 60's comps, but if this is what ya dig,
definitely check out MODern bands like the Omegamen and the Conquerors!
Their releases are just the ticket for organ-lovers. And the Prisoners
from the 80's!

Volume one was curtailed because the pressing plant went bankrupt, causing
the label owner to lose quite a bit of cash. It did reach the test pressing
stage. Then volume two was done elsewhere and therefore came out before
volume one. I THINK vol.1 is now available....

I reckon so, but the best version I've heard is by Aussies Russ Kruger & the
Atlantics - killer bass-heavy '60s punk. Apparently the Atlantics sent a
copy of their 45 to a US record company (Kapp, I assume) where the Music
Explosion heard it and ripped off the arrangement for their hit version.

So that solves it, I always wondered how Music Explosion got a hold of it. So
now, how exactly did the Atlantics get a hold of it???? I haven't heard the
Atlantics version (nudge, nudge there Pete) yet, and it sounds really hip. I
really dig the jerky organ on the Little Darlings version. Tony

Then I strongly recommend (again) you check out the Pebbles 10 CD. This
disc collects tracks mostly from later (as in not first five) volumes of
the Pebbles lp series, it's cheap, and you don't have to worry about
repeating yourself if you buy other comps (except Pebbles lps). It's
chock full of straight ahead, manic ravers that make the Pebbles series
so enjoyable.
You might also want to consider the two Sudazed Dunwich Records comps,
"Oh Yeah", and "If Your Ready". Though these aren't so completely
fuzz-punk-a-go-go like the Pebbles series, they collect some of the best
Chicago all-out garagers, mixed with some respectable efforts at more
pop-oriented numbers. And neither will bust your wallet (or purse, or
trendy Superfriends lunchbox).

>Yes, go ahead, tell all that I am new to list! :-)

Don't go thinking that your original question didn't already give that
away.

I'm always sexy.

Actually I wore a chimpanzee suit that was tight fitting and didn't leave
much to the imagination (perhaps not unlike the Superman costumes
that The Sea Monkeys played in recently). There were guys in Gorilla
suits on stage when I saw the Go-Nuts though.

Saw that commercial again. It's for Columbia house. The program is called
"Play" and it looks like instead of ordering from a limited selection
listed in a catalog, you can order a slightly less limited selection of
music from their internet site. And instead of getting a bunch of free CD's
by todays "TOP" artists, you get some free CD's by todays REALLY COOL and
REAL top acts like, for instance the Bent Scepters!

the Space Cossacks and the Hate Bombs were in there too. Pretty cool.

Maybe some groovy soundtrack comps would do you right, besides what

Hey, I've seen (well, sorta) that commercial a couple of times and thought,
this is sooo lame. The banter between the young and old guy is banal and
goofy. So, the notion that you could actually get turned on to the Bent
Scepters through this club is simply mind-blowing! And knowing how
mainstream people tend to flock like sheep to these kinda clubs, it may be
a diabolically cool way for fab fuzz to get to more ears. Or are some of
our heroes being co-opted? Time will tell.

taste) with a hip Coasters like improv schtick between the songs. All
original members from the old Vegas shows they did. It was a free gig and they
put on amazing show. Thanks to Mike Lucas if he's out there, for telling us
aobut the show. If anyone goes to Vegas, I highly reccommend looking them up.

During my one trip to Las Vegas, with my family around 1973, the only
celebrity spotting that happened was when my (not-especially-hipster)
parents pointed out that some of The Treniers were ahead of us in line at
the Orange Julius stand.

Unfortunately, this was before I'd ever seen DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK (or, for
that matter, heard the song "Poontang"), so the moment was pretty much
wasted on me.

As the originator of this thread, I too was disappointed that it didn't go
anywhere. Timing... Make a late day post on the friday of a three day
weekend and watch it die a slow, quiet death, gasping for discussion. I'll
re-submit my query:

I have been watching this "Beach Music" thread with great interest. It
seems like such a localized movement, but one with great staying power...it
really made an impression on those who grew up with it. Do any of you in
Bompland know of any similar music/dance movements peculiar to certain
regions of the U.S. or regions of one's home country? Peculiar customs?
funny hairstyles? fashion? What was your hometown known for before MTV and
mass media began homogenizing young people in earnest? Share them pleeze!
