Some people have complained about the venue but I can honestly say I've
been in worse toilets than that place. Besides I much prefer seeing real
rock'n'roll played in this sort of place than some swanky hotel in Las
Vegas...

Anyhow, the best thing for me was seeing the Remains - a group I never
thought I'd ever see. The Pretty Things I'd seen only a couple of months
early so... but once they were up on stage weren't they fantastic. The cool
thing about it is that before the Remains came on I was upstairs ordering
drinks at the bar when Phil May started talking to me (after hearing my
English accent). After five or six minutes of small talk he looked at his
watch and said, "We'd better get downstairs now. I don't want to miss the
Remains." It shows, I think, that he really is still totally into the music
which is great.

Above all though it was great to meet so many cool people, and let me tell
you the BOMP!ers that I met were absolutely the coolest!

When I saw them it was at a '50s rock'n'roll/rockabilly festival so I

over-priced...

If Mimi can pick up a nice copy of the Lutins lp for 15$ is that she's probably doing
something as we say "pas très catholique" For example: Doing threatening phone calls
day in and day out at the Valentine Restaurant (a chain-like fast-food restaurant à

I then suggest you pick up the bootleg for 30$ 'cause you won't be seeing the
originals in good condition for much cheaper in Europe...

Santa brought me No. 5 and that track blew me away also - I'm collecting the
CD's of which some are short as just copies of the vinyl I suppose, 1 & 2
are combined on 1 disc. I like the covers and the CD label is a mock of a

Driving back to Illinois after a holiday visit in North Carolina in a
car with no tape player is pretty hard to do. Shannon & I spent much
of the time flipping between Jazz on NPR & Oldies radio, when, all
around the Smokey Mountains, *every single* radio station was
broadcasting blue grass.

Now, no fan of country music am I, but besides the banjos & fiddles,
there's very little difference between bluegrass and old, Robert
Johnson style blues. Great stuff, actually. It's nice to know that a
relatively old form of American folk music is still alive and kicking,
even if it is isolated.

Don't know if I've ever heard it on a comp, but I think the Kingsmen may
have done this "Louie, Louie" type song in the 60's. I definitely know
that the mighty Fleshtones did it up right on their "Speed Connection II"
live '85 in Paris LP. I must admit that I never really heard very much
similarity to "9 Months Later" except perhaps in the chorus a bit. Hey,
maybe we should get a battle of the respective "Tones going for Cave Stomp
'99 (give or take a few months).

I'm pretty sure that the best trax from the 60s Rebellion series will be

60s Rebellion was OK, but suffered from too much filler - I'd recommend
waiting on the next 30 Shutdowns (in spite of my petty misgivings!).

Or a way for some cool listened-to-once CD's to end up in the used bin!

Works for me!

Hey!

Columbia put out a CD called "White Country Blues" a few years back.
It's 20's and 30's country stuff.

Also great is the "Bristol Sessions" 2 LP set that the Country Music
Foundation released about 10 years ago. And Billy Altman (ex-CREEM
writer) put a nice set together for RCA called "Are You From
Dixie?-Great Brother Acts From the 30's".

Most of the bluegrass originators are still playing. All summer long
there are bluegrass festivals all over the Smokies.

Seeya,
Kip

You could also try The Clique. Their album 'Self Preservation Society' on
Detour Records is really good
