Subject: Re: 60s quebec stuff Shocking truth revealed!!!

I have to be frank with you...Last night Mimi confessed her tricks to
me totally out of catholic guilt and a few irish whiskies down the
hatch! Yes indeed! It's still very 'actuelle'to do this in Quebec. This
is a reanactment of her now famous technique: Now Bombettes and suave
Bombers read carefully and please do not try this at home!

First of all, Mimi makes extensive lists of all taverns in Montreal and
then unsuspectively shows up on let's say free pork rinds night. The
places are usually packed and crawling with men hungry for flesh and a
little action to make them forget their hard day at work. She spots her
victim: The men are always bachelors aged between 50 and 58:she's
actually studied charts of what age group in 1966 had the biggest income
devoted to record buying. After a bit of chit chat, where the men always
talk about how her charming kitty beat girl look reminds them of some
sixties italian actress or of some chick that used to strip at the local
gogo club, Mimi doesn't even have to slip viagra in their pint, that
the men already want to take the her back their appartments for a
little... (please hum cool wah-wah solo with tight breakbeats). Once in
the appartment, Mimi strips down to her shiny black garments and the men
our immediately whacked on the head by Mimi's amazing kung fu twist!
Boum! Bang! Shazam! She then immediately goes thru their record
collection, carefully picking up the gems and flees the scene of the
crime by the time it's takes you to say: Montezuma! Mimi also told me
that reports from our local crime tabloid (Allo! Police!)state that men
usually wake up a few hours later with a massive head wound wearing only
smelly underwear and with teeth marks on their left thigh! And before I
go any further I would like to take this opportunity to send out my
deepest sympathies to the victims: Because the worst is yet to come
after they realise that their record collection has been "raped" by a
vinyl fiend. The men our not men anymore!!! I wish to stop my story here
by respect for the victims that have to live day in and day out with
this terrible tragedy!

p.s. When mimi mentions that she's paid 6 or 15 dollars for an album,
that's usually what the cab fare came up to from the victim's place to
her pad.

p.s.2 Beware Mimi is on the loose!!! She digs so much the latest volumes
of Girls in The Garage! (The Asian one) and of Project Blue that she's
planning to track down every karaoke bar from here to Vancouver to pick
up some rare slabs of sushi beats!!! Any men fitting the category of the
victims should beware. To tip you off I know she's been rehearsing in
Japanese such hits as Spector's Be my baby! and Gainsbourg's Les
sucettes.

Not a stupid question! During the early 60's, there were some French artists
and bands that used the words "Ye Ye" in some of their tunes. "Ye Ye" became
a label for a certain type of French bubblegum music, kind of like British
"Beat."

Hey all!

Just subscribed to the list. It's great to find some like-minded
people out there. Anyway, just wanted to say that I saw a great band
the other night in Atlanta while visiting family that you Bompers
might dig. They're called the King's English and they kicked ass!
Ragin' 60's-style R&B with more than a hint of 60's punk thrown in for
good measure. I think they destroyed everything on the stage. Their
singer was a lunatic and I thought their drummer was a madman as well!
The two of them walked through the club at one point while the singer
carried the floor tom and the drummer played. They disappeared out the
front door while the rest of the band played on! Damn fine show! There
wasn't a weak link in the chain! Their bass player was tight, their
rhythm guitarist/harp player blew his brains out and their lead
guitarist played a mean fuzz guitar! I spoke to their drummer after
the show but he seemed a bit out of it. Anyway, if any of you guys are
from Atlanta and have a chance to catch these guys, do it! I could
have done without that opening band though. They looked like a bunch
of hippies and they played a Chambers Brothers' song for what seemed
like an hour and a half. I liked their guitar player though. The only
good one in the bunch. But the English were amazing! Does anyone on
here know anything about 'em? I would like to try to find some vinyl
or something. They kicked ass! Just my two cents worth....

Dirk

Dirk,

Almost all the band members are subscribers of this here list, but are
usually too modest to self-promote a whole lot The lunatic singer is
Richard Ward and King Richard used to be in a band called Thee Flypped
Whiggs, who had one single on his own Charmkin label. Several of us
Bompers who caught the English at Fuzzfest '98 would agree with your
assessment and endorsement of their performance, although I have it on good
authority (from someone else at the gig you saw) that they are becoming an
even better and truly unforgettably wylde live act. No recordings yet as
far as I know, but I'm sure the boys will inform us about that when it
happens.

Glad you dig e'm!

Rocky.

Say, what's the difference in sound between a Vox Continental and a Vox
Jaguar? I know the Continental has a bunch of drawbars; instead the Jag has
rocker switches and is somewhat simpler internally, but that's about it. I
am thinking of purchasing one fairly soon.

Can anyone give examples of different songs using either?

And did the Mysterians originally use a Vox or a Farfie?

Still, I got a nice copy of Les Lutins LP from Denis at the WFMU record
fair for $25 (no girl was accompanying me but perhaps Denis thought of all
those Nana Mouschouri records that I could get him from Greece...). Great
record! Soon after I saw the reissue which has all the good stuff from
the first LP and some songs from "In Orbit" as well.
While in Athens I didn't find any good (!?) Nana Mouschouri or Demis
Roussos records (with the exception of an Aphrodite's Child single with
"Magic Mirror" on it!), I found out that a Les Miserables reissue is
going to be out soon by No Tyme records from Italy (they did the "Let's
Dig'em Up" comp.). Also, I heard that the Plastic Clouds LP will be
reissued on vinyl by Gearfab (is that right? Anyway, I don't know if they
qualify as I don't think they were from Quebec). What are the other
Canadian reissues that are being planned?

My understanding is that the Farfisa used cheaper to build, less advanced
circuitry, and sold for considerably less than a Vox Continental, which was
supposedly superior in design. Vox later introduced its Jaguar as low
priced Farfisa fighter. It had cheaper to build circuitry similar to that
found in the Farfisa. I am told there is little noticeable difference in
the sound between the two Vox organs.

That was probably their cd that was recorded during the summer of '97
and released on Collectables Records (www.oldies.com). Norton also
released a great live ? LP/CD (Do You Feel It Baby?) recorded at Coney
Island High in NYC during Cavestomp '97.

The Plastic Cloud LP has already been re-issued for years! It's on a US
lable called Lazer's Edge and is still available, but on CD only. They were
from Ontario.
There ARE many other Canadian re-issue records planned on MANY more record
lables. Some will just be various contributed cuts to 60's compilations,
and some as full reissues of records.

Subject: Claude Trenier and Keely Smith

To follow on a thread being discussed here, I'm
sure most of you who are interested caught the A+E
biography of the Rat Pack this week. If not,
Keely Smith basically (but not completely) admits
to dating Sam Giancana and Claude Trenier seems to
finally explain what it was really like to be a
black entertainer in 1950s Las Vegas and puts some
perspective on the Sammy Davis Jr phenomenon.

It may drag in places for some of you- and it's 4
hours, but it's well worth checking out and has a
nice piece of 1960s video of Louis Prima and Keely
Smith at the Kennedy inauguration that I would
kill to get a complete copy of. Plus it shows a
number of photos which never made it into any of
the Sinatra biographies, thanks to Grace D'Amato
who had nice ones of Skinny D'Amato and President
Kennedy, the 500 Club fire with only the Frank
Sinatra photo remaining, etc.

Though for some reason it mentions as fact some
things whch have recently been called into
question, like Marilyn Monroe's affair wtih Bobby
Kennedy, etc. But you know, I've read like most
of the books on this era, so I'm a little snobby
when it comes to this. They still can't get Judy
Campbell on video though, sigh.

When I was in Chicago last October, the highpoint of an otherwise lousy
business trip was a live lounge act I stumbled upon while on a late night
walk. The place: a nice Chinese Restaurant (closed) with a lounge ("The
Orchid Room"). Speakers piped music to the outside from the lounge, which
featured a jazz group fronted by singer Milt Trenier. Curious, I stepped
inside and looked at the photos of the resident jazz combo at the entrance
to the lounge. A lifetime of photos, many autographed, feratured Milt
Trenier alongside with every imagineable Jazz and Las Vegas great. Many
were faded, but the one that stood out in my mind was a black and white
photo, taken at night, of the marquee of Harlem's Apollo Theater; the
headlining act: The Treniers.

The act itself was wonderful; polished, very old school. Milt made
reference more than once to his 40+ years in show business. He was rather
slight, and did a few dance steps; very much in the Sammy Davis Jr. style;
he even did a tune or two of Sammy's. He was a real entertainer, and did a
great job despite playing to a nearly empty house, and making jokes with the
audience (a surreal night; only four other patrons, including a couple who
looked like Ed Koch and the elderly Joan Crawford). I realized that I was
seeing the end of a dying art form, and drank it all in, staying much longer
than I had intended. This show was the highlight of a trip that was
otherwise spent butting heads with Chicago's union labor.

What is the connection with Claude Trenier and "The Treniers" mentioned
earlier in this thread?
