I too have pondered the question. But I don't believe that the guitarist
from the Atlantics and the actor from Days of Our Lives are the same man.
Nowhere in any article that I have read is it mentioned - nor on the
Canetoad records releases.
I do remember several years ago reading an article about the actor in TV
Week (my usual intellectual reading matter) and it wasn't mentioned. I'm
sure it would have been because the Atlantics were top of the charts during
the surf boom.

PS if anyone hasn't got the Canetoad release of the Atlantics punk/beat
material my advice is to rush out and get it now!

Subject: King's English

I'll assume Dirk Gently is a pseudonymn and hope that this isn't just one
of our friends in disguise to give us a not necessarily deserved ego boost,
because he said some awfully nice stuff about the King's English (Aw,
shucks *blush*). Anyway, I'm Brian, and I'm the bass player (Hi, Brian!).
If he really is from out of town, I'm happy he caught us, and thank him for
the kind words!

A quick aside to Rocky: Does your speech generator pronounce Bass like the
fish/ale or the guitar? I play bass, and I drink bass. How does that sound?

Anyway, I'd like to stick in a quick positive note about The Marianne
Faithfuls, who are the hippy looking band that Dirk didn't like. They
turned out an EXCELLENT version of Tony Colton's "I've Laid Some Down" that
night, which I for one was very appreciative of. Hopefully though, Dirk
caught we in the King's English teasing the M.F.'s about "Time Has Come
Today" at various times through the night. They took our good natured
ribbing well. I hope it doesn't escalate into a war of the pranksters
(they'll be sorry if it does).

Also, in addition to the guitar player playing well, the drummer (Rob
White, formerly of The Rootes Groop in Seattle) also sounded great. But, I
prefer the reckless abandon of our own "Daviv" Brock (a Bomper).

Next time you're in town and you get to see us, Dirk, do come introduce
yourself. But forget about Daviv, he's always out of it! You're best off
talking to our rhythm guitarist/harp maniac Brian Phillips. He'll be
sober, he's a bomper, and he's as where as you are! I'll let Richard (also
on Bomp!) handle the announcement of our next show, assuming we get one.

Well, believe it or not, it sounded perfect! Whoever did the basic
pronunciation programming (which can be adjusted, but I've never had to
bother), may have also played bass (like baseball) and been familiar with
your fave ale, 'cuz it sure sounds like the fish.

Apparently not, Deena. In this context it sounds like some new automated
rhythm machine (ie. bass guitar) rather than the fish in a blender. Don't
know if you used a capital 'B', but I suspect they set it up for most
common pronunciation. Since Bass is also someone's name (like the ale),
they gave it the fishy sound.

Firstly, apologies for the gaff on the Fuzztones/9 Months Later front. I
thought it was the same song. Duh...

You can find the original version by the Sheep on a Stateside 45. (I'm not
too sure about the label in the US.) The song is a very thinly disguised
rewrite of 'Louie Louie' and the Fleshtones considered it bonafide to
include in their Kingsmen's medley on 'Speed Connection'. Of course this
may have had something to do with the fact that the albums producer was
Miles Strange (AKA Richard Gottehrer) who is a former member of the Sheep
(AKA The Strangeloves). On a related note the 45 also contains a great
version of the Bunker Hill favourite 'Hide & Seek' and which the 'Tones
also covered on 'Speed Connection'. BTW when Gottehrer first met the
Fleshtones and discovered they really dug the Strangeloves his initial
reaction was: "What! You like that garbage!"

"Miles Strange baby, Miles Strange..."

I used to watch the "Howdy Doody" show when I was a kid in the 50's.
One of the characters (a person, not a one of the marionettes) was an
Indian who would occasionally say "Cowabunga!" It was kind of an
expression of excitement or surprise. Later, in the mid 60's, the
character in the "Beach Movies" played by Jody McRae would shout
"Cowabunga" as he ran across the beach into the water to catch the
surf. Now if I could only remember the name of the Indian.

The Indian's name was Chief Thunderthud. I believe his daughter, an Indian
princess was named Princess Winter-Spring-Summer-Fall, or some variation on
that.

Thanks, David. The daughter was Princess Summer-Fall-Winter-Spring.
And don't forget Flub-a-Dub, Dilly Dally, Phineas T. Bluster, Cornelius
J. Cobb and Clarabell.

Subject: More on The English

Now that I have the lowdown on those loons, The King's English, I
would like to set something straight as I am afraid I might have said
something that was taken as an insult. First of all, when I said the
drummer Dave appeared to be out of it, I didn't mean that in a bad
way. It just seemed like he had something else on his mind. He was
friendly, just preoccupied, like he was looking for somebody (a
somebody of the feminine persuasion perhaps? He just had that "look"
on his face ). Anyway, please don't take anything I said as an
offense. With that out of the way, I am curious to find out more about
the singer's previous band, Thee Flypped Wigs. Someone had mentioned
that they had put a record out. How would one go about getting a hold
of that? Does it sound anything like The King's English? Any help
would be appreciated. And please keep me informed of any shows in the
future. I do make it to Atlanta regularly, and it's no big deal for me
to make a trip to see a show.

Most of us might better remember the actor who portrayed Clarabell, Bob
Keeshan, as the one and only (in my book) Captain Kangaroo!!

Subject: Vox Continental vs. Jaguar - was re: Hammond etc...

<< Say, what's the difference in sound between a Vox Continental and a Vox
Jaguar? I know the Continental has a bunch of drawbars; instead the Jag has
rocker switches and is somewhat simpler internally, but that's about it. I
am thinking of purchasing one fairly soon. >>

I own both a Jaguar and a Continental ( I gig w/ the Continental, and the Jag
stays in the back room at home). The Continental has more variations in the
tone "colors"; the Jag sounds a bit like a Farfisa when all the switches are
on. With the Continental, I can vary the tone while I'm playing, using the
drawbars. The Jaguar really doesn't have as much versatility; that's why you
can pick one up more cheaply than a Continental.

<< Can anyone give examples of different songs using either? >>

Well, anything by the Lyres, Dave Clark Five, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and
the Animals is done with a Continental. Also, the first Doors album, and
Elvis Costello (w/ the Attractions - Steve Nieve actually used a Super-
Continental). And - um - Mondo Topless (had to put a plug in there!!!)

Since the Jaguar was always the less desirable of the Vox organs, there
weren't too many bands that I remember using it. Off the top of my head:
Early Miracle Workers, United States of Existence, Fortune & Maltese, Iron
Butterfly (although I think Iron Butterfly may have used a Continental)

<< And did the Mysterians originally use a Vox or a Farfie? >>

Vox. Continetal, I believe.

Sam :)

This is going back a few days, but Squeaky asked:

I think it was "Green Mosquito", an instrumental by the Tune Rockers, which
you can get on Born Bad vol. 5 (there's that series again!).

Glynnis-
I just read that you were interested in commisioning art from Rudi-In
the last Cult of Fuzz newsletter, they said he's doing art again and open to
doing custom work for fans on commision. La Donna says she can get messages to
him, FYI. Her e-mail is: cultoffuzz@usa.net

And yet, when I was able to find one or two Vox Jaguars for sale or even
just to be played at one of their NYC gigs this fall, Jon Weiss told me
they were only interested in a Continental. AAAAUUUUUGGGHHH. As if playing
that horrible modern keyboard thing was better?

Except that lately I've seen Jeffrey playing a Jaguar.

Like Sam, I prefer the Continental, but... well, I'd be perfectly happy to
own a Jaguar, as well.

Yeah, I tried to get him to do a painting thru a friend when Rudi was in
Holland. I wanted
to give it to my hubby for Christmas.
Thanks for the email address.

I'd say that's a reasonable assumption. In fact, the mysterious "Dirk" may
be more than just a friend.

"Daviv" chimed in:

Could it just be coincidence that he's the only person who actually spoke
with Dirk? That question is left for the reader to decide.
