When Mike Stax was in London a couple of months back he raved about them
to me and comparing them with Love - now I'm sure we all respect Mike's
opinions on stuff like this but when I played the CD I found it pretty
boring, but then I do prefer more punky stuff anyway.

Actually Mojo, I'd been saving in order to take a trip before Josh even had
the idea of putting on the Wild Weekend. When Blair mentioned that Cave
Stomp was happening I figured that I'd make the trip while it was taking
place.

I didn't make a single penny out of the Wild Weekend. I got involved with
the event simply because I wanted to see something great like that
happening in London. It was Josh who organised all the financing for the
event, making sure all the expenses were paid for in advance - ie stuff
like flights, fees, equipment hire, transport, printing of
flyers/tickets/posters, venue hire fees and many more things that most of
us wouldn't imagine and it's only right that he makes his money back don't
you think.

Even though the Thursday night was billed as being hosted by the Dirty
Water Club it was in name only. All money from ticket sales and door money
went through Josh's Exotic Entertainment. When it comes down to it I
actually lost money - if the Wild Weekend wasn't on Thee Headcoats would
still have played that Thursday and I'd have earned a bit from putting it
on. And furthermore, all the money that I collected on the door at the Red
Eye on the Saturday afternoon at the Sires/Embrooks/Psychotic Reaction gig
was split equally between the three bands.

When Jon Weiss was in London for the Wild Weekend I paid for my Cave Stomp
tickets with US dollars. I don't know if Josh and Babz paid for their
tickets or not - that's not my concern. All I want is for people to know
the facts - not to be thinking I'm making tons of money when I'm not.

In 1957 Warner Brothers made a movie called "Jamboree". Scouts went out and
chose performers and commissioned New York's finest song writers to come up
with some songs for the film. The film consisted of a flimsy plot
constructed for the purpose of joining together a series of rock'n'roll
performances to cash in on the current craze - a format I'm sure we're all
familiar with from several other films of the period.

Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Buddy Knox, Frankie Avalon,
Lewis Lyman and the Teen Chords and, erm, Slim Whitman got to take their
pick of the songs presented to them by these Brill Building types.

Apparently, Perkins passed over Great Balls of Fire - and how many people
out there assume that to be a Lewis original?! Instead, he chose to perform
Glad All Over for the movie. Lend Me Your Comb wasn't chosen by anyone, but
Perkins liked it well enough to record it as the flipside of the single of
Glad All Over, his last single on the Sun label.

I bought the Jaguar as a backup in case the Continental gives me fits (which

I should have been a bit clearer. I agree there's a difference. However,
given the choice between playing a Jaguar at a show and playing one of
those horrible modern keyboards that Little Frank uses when he can't get a
Vox, I'd choose the Jaguar every time.

I can understand him not wanting to *buy* a Jaguar, in the hopes of
finding a Continental, but I'd choose the Jaguar over those modern keys
every time.

actually the cramps' tune garbage man is an outright lift of "boss" -- surf
instro tune by the rumblers. i haven't heard the dc5 tune, but if you check
out the rumblers tune you'll see what i mean--it's a note for note cover
(including guitar solo at the end) w/ words added.

i have heard before that there's been talk of legal action regarding this...

the cramps actually did the same thing to a link wray tune and called it
"sunglasses after dark" but cited link in the songwriting credits...

still love the cramps,

OK, better be careful this time round and not make any false comparisons.
I mentioned several months ago that GARBAGE MAN contains the same riff as a
DC5 instrumental called 'On The Move' and hits the viewer five minutes into
'Catch Us If You Can' film (called as 'Wild Weekend' in the US). If you
remember the film then it's the bit where the double decker bus leaves
Smithfield market for the boys pad up in Tottenham.

Then you had best call Sally Kimball to defend you for I, Bugs Meany,
um...Brian Phillips (harmonica, backup vox and rhythm guitar, which is also
a Vox), seem to believe that this was an honest assessment written by
someone other than a band member (and thank you very much, I had a great
time that night. For anyone who saw me that night, I was not drunk,
because I don't drink. Yup, I can't act like that without spirits, so I
teetotal for more than one reason!)

To answer Deena's question, as to why we have kept silent, this is not
entirely true. Under guise of "English" reserve, we actually have
mentioned the band a couple of times. I demurred talking about us during
Fuzz Fest, since I reviewed all of the other bands (Rocky stepped in with
some nice comments) and Brian Poust (bass, but he may or may not drink
Bass)(Hi, Brian!) posted a small follow-up. Thank you for showing
interest, though, Deena!

As Lee Hays of the Weavers said, I was trying to keep a respectful silence
about it, but I will volunteer this, in alphabetical order:

David Brock - Drums
Robby Poore - Lead Guitar, Backup Vocals
Brian Phillips (see article)
Brian Poust - (see article)
Richard Ward - Lead Vocals, Tambourine (and then another Tambourine),
Maracas (and then More - acas)

Subject: When bad arrangements happen to good songs

Recently bought a reissue of "Got My Mind Set On You" by James Ray, because
I rather liked the cover by George Harrison. Well, although Ray has a
better voice than Harrison, the arrangement scuttles a good song. It has
strings and horns (fine by me, glad they spent the money) dixie-style banjo
(very un-Monks-like banjo) and in the middle of the record, singers not
unlike the Mormon Tabernacle Choir show up and really murder the song.

By contrast, "Come Spy With Me" by the Miracles has roughly the same amount
of instruments and it is a fantastic song with a great arrangement (no
banjo, no choir, but you do have the rest of the Miracles)

I played this for my wife and said, "You know what this sounds like? Their
trying to make him into Pat Boone!"

Can anyone think of Bomp! - style songs that would have been good if not
for bad choices in instrumentation?

no lp that I know of, just about 4 unbeleivably great 45's. They are
extrememly rare as well.

Where to run (1st one), Neverdie,(2nd) & From now on(3rd Action soundalike)
have been reissued as well as their last psychier track that appeared on one
of the many limited to 400 copies, no liner notes(but here's a poem insert),
bad sound quality, no photos, bad pressing Euro-comps, that seem to flood the
market over in Europe. Actually some of these pseudo-comps do offer decent
sound. The b-sides should be comped, they're all really cool minor keyers.

As it happens, AMC just ran "Pajama Party" on Saturday Night, which
features Buster Keaton in Indian regalia uttering "Cowabunga" from time to
time. Jody McCrea does not, although he's in the film as a character
called "Big Lunk".
On the whole, compared poorly with "Girls On The Beach", shown the
previous Saturday night. Lotsa good footage of Lesley Gore and the Beach
Boys in that one - P Party just had Donna Loren and some Anonymous 4
hodads.
Gosh, what could this Saturday hold in store??

i recently snagged a real powerpop gem by a band called the pop. it's a 7"
on arista, where they cover the kinks' "i need you" and have a killer b-side
tune called "nobody's toy." appears to be from around 1980...

can any of you powerpop fanatics give me the skinny on this band? where
they were from, how many albums, what's essential, etc.

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help me. I'm good friends with a local band
here in Perth called Three Orange Whips, who have just independently
released their debut CD called Ladies & Gentlemen... I suppose you would
describe their sound as a cross between the Celibate Rifles and Tumbleweed.
Basically they are a great punk - rock band in the classic Australian sense.
I'm helping them out by trying to find any record labels, fanzines radio
shows etc that would be interested in their CD, either releasing,
distributing, reviewing or playing it. Can anyone out their reccomend
anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I suppose I need email and
postal addresses as well as web addresses if there is one.

Thanks,

I don't have the new single, but I heard the Dickies perform it live on Sat
night. From what I can judge from hearing it live, its not their strongest
effort. The show was fun, as Leonard Graves-Phillips taunted the skinheads at
the show with his Stewie penis puppet. I'm waiting for the LP to come out
which will have "my Pop the Cop" on it and hopefully some other cool tracks.

That is instructive. As a newcomer to playing with organs I'd be happy with
either a Jaguar or a Continental. I'd think an advantage of the Jaguar from
a fix-it standpoint is that the electronics are simpler....

Just a few weeks ago I flipped when I spotted a Continental at a music
store in Tampa. It was sitting in the back room amidst tons of records and
other clutter. The top had been replaced with a handcrafted wooden cover. I
lifted it up and gasped at the whole mess of wires - it looked like a
5-gallon case of spaghetti. After talking to the owner I found out that the
organ was not for sale and had been there for two years "waiting on parts
from England."

All this anti-Jaguar sentiment! If I get one I'll have to rip the nameplate
off the front and tell people it's a Vox "Confidential."

You've made some good points (which you can obviously back up) and I think
we can agree that the Continental is a decided step up.

> Well, anything by the Lyres, Dave Clark Five, Paul Revere and the Raiders, and

After you sent this last night I had a former Bomper play me his Mondo
Topless CD. Right-on sounds!
