Was it a Link Wray song? I'm sure I have a record of Sunglasses After Dark
from the 50s on, maybe the Blue Moon label - not sure about the label and
can't remember the singer's name off the top of my head, but it is on a

not sure about the born bad series, but this tune is on at least a few
different surf comps, including surf legends & rumors.

there's actually also a great comp of their stuff on Downey/DCC (the same
label that put out surf legends & rumors). 20+ great tunes, many of which
have been covered by the likes of jackie & cedrics & others... definitely
worth checking out.

There's a VIP 233 for sale here in Florida and I'm considering making a long
trip to go look at it. It has 2 x 49 keys (but no reverse color keys) and 24
tabs. I believe the VIPs were made in the early 70s.

Well Brian, last time some guy DID keep pushing me out of the way! My comments
to this little fellow brought Craig Moore running to see who was actually
trying to push
me around!
And I get rubbed up against ALL the time. I usually ignore that part or

Victor wrote:
"I just checked out this tape that had Julie Driscoll & Brian Auger Trinity
performing this song called "Save Me". Does anybody know if this track is
available on an album or somekind of compilation?"

Auger was definitely a genius behind a Hammond organ. He plays with Eric
Burdon on occasion, from what I understand.

The albums "Open" and "Definitely What" have been reissued and are widely
available on CD. Neither has "Save Me" though. That song did appear on
two best of albums, "Best of Brian Auger" and "Best of Julie Driscoll".
While it is a great version, it's best to not get hung up on finding it.
There's a wealth of great Auger/Driscoll/Trinity material out there in
various places. "Save Me" was originally released on 45 only, on Marmalade.

Here's a list of Auger/Driscoll songs to watch out for:

	Save Me (Aretha)
	Tiger
George Bruno Money (about Zoot Money)
In and Out (sounds like Wes Montgomery!)
	Black Cat
	Indian Rope Man (Richie Havens)
Red Beans & Rice (Booker T)
Back At the Chicken Shack (Jimmy Smith)
	A Kind of Love In
	Kiko

By the time "Street Noise" was released, they were going well into the
hippie realm. "Indian Rope Man" is a needle in a haystack from that album.
Excellent version. Auger's jazz roots came back to him in the form of
jazz fusion soon after with Brian Auger's Oblivian Express. Mostly dreck
there, with an occasional fun tune, like their version of Roberta Flack's
hit "Compared To What".

In the vein of "Save Me", also try to hunt down Martha Velez's version of
"Tell Mama" from her '69 LP "Friends & Angels". She was from NY (The Bronx
or Brooklyn) but found herself in the UK. Brian Auger, Keef Hartley, Eric
Clapton, Christine McVie, Mitch Mitchell, Jim Capaldi and Jack Bruce are on
the album. Pretty impressive, huh?

I remember them as being part of the (new) wave of monosyllabic power pop

The Pop	1977
Go! 1979
Hearts and Knives EP 1981

Essentially a routine hard-rock/power pop outfit, this LA group acquired
hipness through an actively pro-local scene stance as well as attitudes
shared with more overtly rebellious colleagues. Their DIY debut LP shows
them equally adept at pounding out fierce rockers and lovingly constructing
softer, more melodic tracks, with occasionally eccentric production
touches, linking both in the anthemic "Down on the Boulevard." As good as
the Raspberries' Starting Over but more urgent, and less studiedly
nostalgic or obviously derivative.

Produced by Earle Mankey, Go! shows how the band moved with the times,
modifying British modern pop notions to suit themselves. Not quite as
humor-conscious (for better and worse) as XTC, the Pop employs a strangely
detached intensity that gives a fillip to each track. There isn't any one
brilliant number (although "Under the Microscope" comes close), yet Go! is
entertaining straight through.

Two years later, without the guitar and arranging talents of Tim McGovern
(who had joined the pre-stardom Motels) or the support of a major label,
the remaining foursome sound somewhat chastened for not having played it
safer--and they do. The six-song Hearts and Knives presents a blander
version of their former selves: pleasant, lightweight originals and a lame
Stones cover that's limply out of character.

Towards the end of the '80s, singer/guitarist Roger Prescott surfaced in a
band called Train Wreck Ghosts, which he formed with ex-Plimsouls guitarist
Eddie Munoz following the latter's brief stint in the dB's. He and Munoz
then hired on to the Walking Wounded, and appeared on one of that group's
records before continuing their Texas-based band. The Pop's other frontman,
David Swanson, reappeared in 1990 with a dull album of awkwardly sung
heartland rock.

The Easybeats are one of my all time favorites. Their best album (certainly
worth the price of a German import) is Volume 3. This one contains "Sorry",
and a slew of other great tunes. The double CD box is pretty good as well.

Or at least horribly misguided.... Did anyone catch Blondie on the American
Music Awards last night? They did this Zepp - Kashmir kind of thing with 4
Coolio dudes rapping over the top of it. I know they have to keep up with the
times, but c'mon. Rap metal is not exactly cutting edge.... On the plus
side, their wonderful book "Making Tracks" was reissued in the Fall.

hey groovers

someone was asking about the Dickies (great band!) specifically about their
colored vinyl releases - there were loads here in the UK, in fact nearly all
the original releases on A&M were on different colors. Here's the ones that
I have:

45s (all on a&M, all 7-inchers except the first one)
Paranoid/You drive me ape/Hideous (10-inch white vinyl)
Paranoid/I'm OK, you're OK (clear)
Give it back/You drive me ape (white)
Eve of destruction/Doggie Do (pink)
Silent night/Sound of SIlence (white) (the B-side is a GREAT steamroller
version of the Simon & Garfunkel tune)
Banana Splits/Hideous/Got it at the store (yellow) (their big hit record)
Nights in White Satin/Waterslide (white)
Fan mail/forgotten the b-side (red)
Gigantor/Bowling with Bedrock Barney(yellow)

LPs
Incredible Shrinking Dickies (yellow, blue and some other colors too)
Dawn of the Dickies (blue)
Stukas over Disneyland (green) oops! not on A&M

and oh yeah someone else was asking about details of the MEKONS first
album - do ya mean "The Quality of Mercy is not Strmen" ?? it's gotta monkey
on the front and it's on Virgin, shouldn't be too hard to find secondhand.

and finally!! Hit Record Featuring A Vox Jaguar Organ, no 94 : Orchestral
Manouevres in the Dark: "Electricity".

in a multicolored, punky sorta way

Rob, I've gotta agree with you. I tuned in to that stupid show
just to see that and I've never been so disappointed in all my
life. She still looks good, but her make-up was on the grotesque
side--"red eyeshadow, green mascara, yuck, she's too much,"
indeed! I guess they wanted to pair her with rap guys in honor
of her having one of the first big "rap" hits, but it just
didn't work. If they'd dug up Run DMC or Grandmaster Flash
or somebody, maybe, but not Coolio. I hope they get their
act together when/if they decide to do a tour or something.

Still worship the woman, though! She was an early idol of mine.
And Clem Burke still sported the mod 'do.

Dag, how come I haven't seen "Making Tracks" in any stores? The
Lincoln Center branch of NYPL used to carry it, but it must have
been swiped a long time ago, because I haven't seen it there in
ages. Who published the reissue? Does it have all the same

The Secret Cinema presents
EXOTICA FILMS 2: Music and More! at Fez

Fez, 380 Lafayette Street
(between E. 4th & Great Jones)
New York City • (212) 533-2680

On Friday, January 29, the Secret Cinema will present EXOTICA FILMS 2:
Music and More! at Fez. This collection of ultra-rare footage will showcase
a unique collection of filmed musical performances from a variety of
offbeat jazz, pop, and rock artists from around the globe. The films come
from a variety of sources, including very early TV shows, film jukeboxes
from the 1940s ("Soundies") and 1960s ("Scopitones"), and select feature
film clips. This long awaited follow-up to the Secret Cinema's EXOTICA
MUSIC FILMS program of a year and a half ago features 100% new programming
- -- little of which is likely to have been seen before by anybody attending!

Doors open at 8:30 pm. The screening begins at 9:00 pm. Admission is $8.00.

As with all Secret Cinema presentations, all of the films will be projected
from archival 16mm film prints onto a giant movie screen (not video).

Just some of the performers shown on the big screen will include: Astrud
Gilberto, Desi Arnaz, Sylvie Vartan, Trini Lopez, Johnny Hallyday and
Carmen Miranda.

Adding extra spice to this celluloid smorgasboard is a selection of equally
arcane short subjects, without musicians but plenty of exoticism:
Technicolor travelogues of Caribbean isles, coming attraction "trailers"
for Maria Montez movies, a 1920s silent film on "Ceylon Devil Dancers and
Buddas," and a look at tiki carving and other customs of the South Seas.

Plus, scenes from a never-shown-in-the-U.S. French TV special, WORLD MUSIC
ET SETECT, featuring organ jazz/pop-rock instro combo André Brasseur et son
Orchestre, Peter Max-like animation and pop-art special effects.

Plus, a sampling of DISK JOCKEY TV TOONS. These lost artifacts from early
50s broadcasting were marketed to local television stations for use as
filler programming during Hit Parade-type shows. The low-budget, bizarre
visualizations are essentially rock videos with no soundtracks, and were
made to be shown with suggested popular records.

And if all this weren't enough, there will be a special talk about the
history of film jukeboxes by Secret Cinema curator Jay Schwartz,
illustrated with color slides of rare photos and original advertising
materials.

The Secret Cinema, begun in 1992, is a Philadelphia-based floating
repertory film series that shows unusual and lost film fare of all types at
various locations.

Oooh, You girls are so naughty!!! I love it!!!! These tricks work as long as
you don't mind the dirty ol' buggers sneaking a peek.. and lets face it, as
long as you keep your clothes on, they're not really going to see all that
much...a flash of knickers? Big deal, if it saves me a few bucks! HA HA!!
They don't have a chance against the likes of us!!! Of course, if modesty
won't allow you to carry on like this (Hm, "Carry on.." films probably have
a lot to do with my way of thinking about this matter, come to think of it!)
you can try the tight sweater or tee shirt thing, or just batting yer lashes
and sweet talking a bit can do the trick too!

No comment from you, thank you J'son! I know what you're thinking before you
even read this!!!

Funny this should be brought up, because I just happen to have a vinyl
Born Bad 4 underneath the passenger seat of my car (found in NY and now
being dragged across country). Yep, "Boss" shows up here.
The CDs of these are pricey but findable, I've been going for the vinyl
because it's hard to say "no" to gatefolded lps, although they're harder
to find.
