I bought a copy of the CD last month at Rhythm Records in Camden Town,
north London - as a X-mas gift for a friend - so there are still copies
knocking around. For mail order I'd try Murder By Guitar
(murderbyguitar@digitalisdesign.demon.co.uk) - they claimed to me that they
could supply the vinyl re-issue and the CD. Now...don't tell anyone who
told you, but I have good information that there may be a vinyl bootleg
re-issue within two or three months...

Can't remember offhand, but the answer lies in the liner notes of "Gary
Usher Vol.1 Knights/Kickstands" CD. I *think* it was Knights, then
Hondells...either way they were cut I think within 48 hours of each other
with largely the same group of players.

Incidentally, when I used to do improv comedy, I worked a....Marathon. I

entertainment before the race. One of the other stages was being used by
Wavy Gravy (at a Marathon). And what wisdom did he drop on the race fans?

At the same store, I saw "Love, Peace and Poetry" (the Latino volume) for

Picked up a three-LP Elektra comp from '71 with a fairly robust cover of
"Blackberry Way" by the New Seekers. Altho it seems like a bizarre cover,
the Seeks actually do a credible job. Also on the comp was a non-LP track
by Roxy called "Listen to the Music." It's mono but the liners don't
elaborate. Anybody know if this was a single (being mono, it seems that it
was)?

Anyway, any other people out there with wierd covers they've "uncovered."

Yes! Last weekend I found an LP from 1969 by Roslyn Kind. She does a weird
lounge/psych
hybrid version of "Shapes Of Things To Come".
It turns out that Miss Kind has had a prolific recording career and has
starred in a few movies,

"Don't Want To Cry" - The Buckinghams (USA 45 ca. '66)

"You're Wrong Girl" - Michael John & The Pendulums (Bob-Ke 45 ca. '67) <a

Hmmm, this reminds me of the Zakary Thaks stuff, including the
fuzz-drenched classic, "Can You Hear Your Daddy's Footsteps?" and it's
non-vocal version (which someone should stick in a Karioke machine).

96 Tears - Big Maybelle (also Aretha Franklin). Here is a picture of Big
Maybelle's. http://www.mindspring.com/~hagar/r.html
Uptight (Everything's Alright) retitled Little Ole Man - Bill Cosby. AND
that was a hit!
Psychotic Reaction - Brenton Wood. It's the same backing track, but
Brenton is singing and playing keyboards over it. He's slightly out-of-sync.

I don't, but I can tell you that the original version of "I Got My Mojo

at least one of hers (think it was Proud Mary) made it on the Golden Throats
comp, the one that introduced the world to William Shatners (ahem) vocal
stylings. Best cover on that however goes to Jack Webb of Dragnet fame, doing
"try a Little Tenderness" like he's giving a deposition in court....

This version is cool! I sent Question Mark a cassette of it, he told me
he knew of the version, but didn't have a copy.

I recently picked up a 45 with a cooking version of "Reaction" which
replaces all the vocals with a roller rink organ, but otherwise replicates
the original arrangement. It is apparently a mid-60s special pressing for
use by dancers (perhaps at a roller rink?!) - the flip is a similar
treatment of "Henry The 8th" by Herman's Hermits.

I definitely second (or third) the vote for Mae West's "Way Out West" lp
on Tower with Somebody's Chyldren... the cover photo ALONE is mindbending,
then the songs (Day Tripper, Twist and Shout, etc.) really come through.

Other wierd covers:

"Hey Joe" by Wilson Pickett (Atlantic 45, late '60s)

"Tomorrow Never Knows" by Junior Parker (Blue Rock 45, late '60s) - or was
it Jr. Wells? I am pretty sure about this existing, though it _seems_
like a hallucination...

"20th Century Fox" by Freddy Cannon (Warner Bros. 45) HOT version of the
Doors song! Sounds like a real garage band backing him, rather than
studio musicians.

"It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" by LeRoy Van Dyke (also a WB 45) Pretty
odd to hear a deep-voiced country singer tackling the Dylan song.

Of course, there are tons of bizarre "Golden Throats" celebrity covers,
and lounge/ exotica/ muzak covers, which one could list for days...

Subject: unknown garage song

I have this garage song on a tape of mine that I really like but
unfortunately I don't know the song name or who it's by. The opening
line is something like "I need secruity, yeah and I want it in the
evening? all right, security yeah...". The singer sounds a little like
Mick Jagger but more nasal I guess. The song has a real cool guitar riff
all the way through and begins with what sounds like phased cymbals. Can
someone please help me?

Thanks,
Neal

that would more than likely be "Security" by Thane Russel + 3 outta the UK.
Killer freakbeat, "I need you" is also great by them as well as the flipside
of "Security", "Your love is burning me" Tony

I'd wager this is a cover of Otis Redding's "Security" as done by Thane
Russal (and Three) in 1966... comped on English Freakbeat V. 4 and
Perfumed Garden 2 (thanks to the Delerium website!). A really *amazing*
cover of a classic soul song, one of the best rock and roll adaptations
of soul I can think of.
