Wow, Zoot! I have a funny story that is kinda related to them... I was
interviewing the lead singer from a Melbourne band who are starting to do
reasonably well for themselves out here called Moler, and she said she
bought her bass from the old bassplayer from Zoot... I said to her "That's
Rick Springfield's old band!"... she looked genuinely horrified, and didn't
know whether it was or not, but she said the bassplayer is a hairdresser now
and she had to go to his shop to see the guitar before she bought it. I
couldn't believe she didn't know about the RS connection though, disgusting
isn't it, that young bands don't know a lot about their forefathers?

A friend of mine has a selection of records such as these, I believe they
were released by Reader's Digest or something like that? Muzak versions of
"Paranoid" and the like generally, but there are a few interesting songs,
but most of them are just downright scary!

The Hit label (and others like it) was not about Muzak, it was about
soundalikes, for people too poor, or too cheap (and/or too dense) to be
bothered that they were hearing a Beatles (Stones, Petula Clark, Ronettes,
etc.) song that was similar to, but not the same version they were hearing
on the radio. There are also tons of "easy listening" versions of these
sorts of songs, without vocals, done by string orchestras and the like -
this is the "Muzak" style of cover. I think the Hit (and a number of
other labels) 45s and lps were sold by "rackjobbers" who typically put
racks in drug and grocery stores with these albums full of hit songs, that
only cost about half as much as the real release. I wonder if many people
bought a _second_ such record, or whether they felt burned and avoided
these labels thereafter?

I don't know about the Johnny Lightning cars, I'm pretty broke at the
moment, and when I've got no money to spend I prefer not to torture myself,
and avoid toy and record stores for as long as humanly possible! None of my
friends have told me about them either, so I guess we probably don't have
them in our toy stores, but I'll have a look this afternoon, I'm going into
town, so I'll make a point of it.
Oh, I checked the P & BB single, it's "Daddy" b/w "The World is Full of
Joys", I've only listened to it once, so I'm not sure of the content of the
songs, whether they're overly christian or not.... I've also got a couple of
Hanna Barbera LP's with stories on them that you might like as well, "Top
Cat is Robin Hood", and Magilla Gorilla telling Ogee his version of Alice in
Wonderland! They're pretty funny, but very much little kids stuff.
If you want copies of any of them let me know, I'll tape 'em for you!

I have those, also Doggie Daddy and Augie Doggie Tell the Story of
Pinocchio, and a 5-LP boxed set called Fred Flintstone Presents All-Time
Favorite Children's Stories and Songs, which has condensed versions of some
of the albums in the series (the three already mentioned, plus others).
Some of the albums have the stories broken up by songs, some about the
cartoon characters and some about the stories being told. I haven't
listened to them in a long time (I think I'll do that now!) but as I
remember they're bubblegummy attempts at mid-60s rock sounds and some of
them are pretty cool.

Hmmm. Those of us who live here are properly called Canadians (or
improperly, many other less flattering terms), but Canadiens are usually
the name given to players on the greatest hockey team of the century from
Montreal. Go Habs Go! We're also sometimes called Canucks, but that's a
hockey nickname too for the team from Vancouver. I'll let my francophone
counterparts on this list expand on the literal translation of Canadien.

So are you a person who relates to people from Canada or are you a closet
hockey player? By the way, hockey players like Phil Esposito made some of
the worst novelty records of all-time. Can anyone think of a sport celeb
who actually put out something cool?

Rocky.

According to a Lou Reed discography in WHAT GOES ON, Lou Reed denies any
connection to this record. In '76, a bootlegger used the cover photo
for a release of some pre-Velvets stuff. That's apparently where the
rumor started. Lou doesn't try to hide his early stuff so I don't think
that he had anything to do with this LP.

Early Lou Reed-
Leave Her For Me/So Blue-The Jades-Time 45 (1957)
The Ostrich/Sneaky Pete-The Primitives-Pickwick 45 (1964)
Soundsville-Design LP(1964 or '65)
Rumor has it that Lou wrote and plays on the whole LP
  He admits to-
      You're Driving Me Insane-The Roughnecks
      I've Got A Tiger In My Tank/Cycle Annie-The Beachnuts
Tell Mamma Not To Cry/Maybe Tomorrow-Roberta Williams-Uptown 45 (1964)
  The Primitives in disguise

Possible Lou Reed involvement-
Jan & Dean and The Satellites-Design LP (1964)
Tubby Chess And His Candy Stripe Twisters Do The Twist
                                                  -Grand Prix LP (1964)
Swingin' Teen Sounds Of Ronnie Dove & Terry Phillips-Design LP (1964)
The Surfsiders Sing The Beach Boys Songbook-Design LP (1966-maybe)
Looks Like Love/Really Really Really...Love-Spongey And The Dolls
                                                 -Bridgeport 45 (1964)
Saved/The Syracuse-Felix And The Escorts-Jag 45 (1964)
     Felix is Felix Cavaliere
Don't Put All your Eggs In One Basket/Why Don't You Smile Now
    -The All Night Workers-Round Sound 45 (1965)
Peter Stampfel was an All Night Worker,
as was Mike Esposito of The Blues Magoos

I think that's it, but what do I know.

baskin (later of seatrain), billy elmiger, steve mc cord (the man felix

steve knew music was no replacement for a degree !!!), and some other guy
who i can not remember----esposito had left syracuse by this time---stampfel
had the holy modal rounders going for several years prior to this---"eggs"
was a foot movin great song---"smile" was a cale -reed written dirge---lou
had been a mc cord roomate during his syracuse years----the workers were a
great great fraternity band---saw them many many times during my syracuse

in the late sixties---there is also an otis and the elevators single out

Denny McLain of the Detroit Tigers did an album in the late 60's
featuring him playing the Hammond organ. Not really cool, I suppose,
but it was a Hammond.

I have a 45 by Willie Mays, which I just listened to again recently (on
Duke, ca. '62) and I thought it was pretty good. I had played it on my
radio show, and was playing back a tape of the show, and wondered to
myself who that obscure soulful singer was... then I heard myself saying
"Willie Mays" on the tape.

Detroit Tigers Pitcher (and jailbird) Denny McLain had some Capitol lps in
the late 60s of organ lounge music... I can't remember what they sounded
like, but I imagine they're pretty tepid. I can't honestly remember many
other (vintage) sports guys' records... well, except Rosey Grier - he had
some decent soul 45s too, on various labels. He also wrote some songs
other folks recorded. But I'm not a sports fan, perhaps there are some
others out there I've been oblivious to.

Can't answer that one, although the Puck Rock Vol. 1 compilation on
Wrong Records is pretty cool! Features music by (of course) The Hanson
Bros., D.O.A., Joey Shithead & cub, Huevos Rancheros, The Smugglers,
SNFU, and more. Does anyone know if Vol. 2 was ever released?

I'd recommend the Young Fresh Fellows cover of this disney tune, which almost
could make you like Dinsey music. Along those lines, Disney just bought an AM
station in NYC which will be programing nothing but music for 2-7 year olds.
Bet you won't find them playing the animaniacs theme anytime soon. The sateion
was WQEW, the former radio station of the NY times and hier to the old WNEW-AM
big band crown. Last I saw, my dad was cleaning his assault weapons and
muttering "the rat must die"....

Hey y'all,

Remind me who did the original "New Orleans" ("I said hey hey hey hey
hey...") and also which cover versions do you like the best. Strangely
enough the only two that come to mind at present are Joan Jett's and also
the Namelosers'.

Long-time outfielder Lee Maye made quite a few R&B and soul records under
his full name, Arthur Lee Maye. Tony Conigliaro took a stab at teen idoldom
with a few records in the late 60s, including a version of "Why Don't They
Understand." Terry Bradshaw hit the country charts three times, 1976-80. A
Tigers pitcher named Bill Slayback put out a salute to Hank Aaron in 1973
called "Move Over Babe (Here Comes Henry)" that I always liked. A lot of
athletes made one or two records, but I guess the question was about cool
stuff--other than Arthur Lee Maye all I can think of that might qualify is
that when Jack McDowell was with the White Sox early in his career he had a
band with a teammate (I forget who) and a friend. They were called View (or
VIEW or V.I.E.W.) and sounded vaguely REM-ish when I saw them on TV.
Supposedly they put out an album. I think McDowell may have had another
band later.

The original was Gary "U.S." Bonds in 1960. The only cover version leaping
to my mind is Paul Revere & the Raiders, with reedy lead vocal by Paul.
