Plus 'Makin Time' on 'Inside Out' in '91. Furthermore, on the 20th
Anniversary of 'Sgt Pepper' they were invited to Paris by the French
newspaper Libération to play a special gig of Beatles only songs ('The
Inmates Meet The Beatles'). I've seen the band many times over the last
sixteen years (inc the Barry Masters line-up) and have found them
consistently good. The rhythm section is tight, the two guitarists
compliment one another perfectly (no ego trips) and the singer, Bill
Hurley, is blessed with a rich and expressive voice equally at home with
soul, r'n'b and blues. At one of the last gigs I saw them play they dug
out 'Midnight To Six Man' and transformed it into a fantastic Blue Magoos
workout. BLOODY MESMERISING STUFF. DJ Paul suggests that the band is
inactive at the moment but a pal in France tells me that they recorded a
live album at Le Plan (à Ris Orangis près de Paris) last Spring. To date I
have not seen it in the shops this side of the channel. Finally, someone
was asking about value of the SOHO release of 'Dirty Water', well it's not
that easy to find these days but when it does turn up it never fetchs more
than a few quid.

Yours, down by the banks of the river Thames

Lola,

Yes indeed, Puck Rock Vol. 1 (I don't think another one has surfaced yet)
is a great modern comp. Some of the bands involved have already been
listed by Kopper. The Gerry Cheevers-inspired song Evan mentioned by
Chicks Dig It is also on this, along with one of my personal faves by UIC
called "Wanna Go?" (a tribute to all the great classic fighter/goon players
like Orland Kurtinback, Dave Shultsz, John Ferguson, etc.). Mint records
used to distribute it here in Canada.
And Joey,

(or
VIEW or V.I.E.W.) and sounded vaguely REM-ish when I saw them on TV.
Supposedly they put out an album. I think McDowell may have had another
band later.

I heard somewhere that the Smithereens were supposed to have backed Black
Jack for an album. Never confirmed this though.

I'm sure lots of you are getting a bit bored with this thread, but I wonder
if any of our Boston area Bompers know if it's true that the Lyres were
scheduled to play the national anthem at Fenway during the playoffs in the
late 80's. Unfortunately, the Red Sox fell just short that year as I recall.

Okay, enough jock talk for now.

Rocky.

Magic Bitpop is a weird series - they seem to include ANY kind of Italian
music that came out in the mid-sixties, regardless of whether it's good or
not. Most volumes coincidentally seem to have about two cool cuts on them. I
think it's up to about vol 15 or so; if someone compiled only the best
tracks from these, we'd have one killer CD!

Trivia, but: I think the flipside was actually called "Everybody Needs
a Little Love" - it is a great stomping original, not the Solomon Burke
rockin' soul number the Stones and Elevators covered. The 45 came out in
the US on London, I have it somewhere at home (I'm at work still, and am
relying as usual on my somewhat foggy memory).

It's news to me, but one of the greatest renderings of the National Anthem
was sung at Fenway by Smokey Robinson in the '86 series.
Also, I'm surprised fellow hardball freak Jeff Hess didn't mention this but
longtime former Cardinal hurler Nellie Briles was a lounge singer of some
repute in the late '60s and early '70s. The Red Sox' own Rico Petrocelli
(...who managed Michael Jordan in the minors) was an accomplished drummer.

Got this tonight from Del-Fi's publicity people...

- ---

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 20, 1998

RITCHIE VALENS & BOBBY FULLER TO BE FEATURED

ON VH1'S "BEHIND THE MUSIC" AND E!'S "MYSTERIES & SCANDALS"

(Los Angeles) Next month, the story behind two of legendary indie
re-issue

label DEL-FI's biggest acts -- Ritchie Valens and Bobby Fuller of the
Bobby

Fuller Four ("I Fought The Law") -- will be the subject of two popular
cable

TV series.

In two weeks, on February 3rd, VH1's "Behind the Music" will tell the
story

of Ritchie Valens, the 17-year old rocker from Pacoima who was
tragically

killed in the plane crash that also took the lives of three others,

including Buddy Holly (Holly's story is also featured on the show).
Behind

The Music will air for the first time on the fortieth anniversary of
the

crash. The show will feature an interview with DEL-FI's owner Bob
Keane, who

was Ritchie's only producer/manager.

VH1's "Behind The Music" airs at 9:00pm and 11:00pm. Visit VH1's
online

schedule at www.vh1.com/insidevh1/schedule.

On February 15th, E!'s "Mysteries & Scandals" series will delve into
various

theories behind Fuller's questionable "suicide" in July 1966; his
death was

officially listed as "asphyxia, due to the inhalation of gasoline,"
(later

changed to "accidental"), though rumors of murder-as-revenge still
abound.

The case remains unsolved thirty three years later. Fuller's
mysterious

demise has previously been the topic of a panel discussion at last
year's

SXSW conference, and the subject of TV's "Unsolved Mysteries" in 1996.

Hosted by A.J. Benza, the show will also feature interviews with
Keane,

Randy Fuller (Bobby's brother), Casey Kasem, L.A. music scribe Dan
Epstein,

and USA Today's Edna Gundersen, among others, and is highlighted by
amazing

mid-Sixties footage of the Sunset Strip club scene and the BF4's
television

appearance on Hullabaloo.

E!'s "Mysteries & Scandals" series airs Mondays & Thursdays at 7:30pm,

Tuesdays & Fridays at 9:30am and 5:30pm, and Sundays at 5:30pm. Check
out E!

online at www.eonline.com.

DEL-FI Records have recently issued 3-CD box sets released on both
artists

in the past year.

Valens' COME ON, LET'S GO! -- released in May '98 -- marks the first
time

all of Valens' recorded material has been collected in one newly

re-mastered-for-digital CD box set, and is highlighted by home demos
of

"Donna," "I've Got A Gal Named Sue" (aka "That's My Little Suzie") and

Ritchie's entire Live At Pacoima Jr. High performance.

The Bobby Fuller Four's NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN: The Mustang Years -
issued in

Feb. '98 - features all of the band's 1964-1966 Mustang Records
material,

newly discovered tracks, and their only 'authorized' live recordings,

Celebrity Night At P.J.'S, (previously unavailable in the U.S.). Also

included are mono and stereo versions of the BF4's American rock n'
roll

classic-"I Fought The Law" (a Top Ten U.S. single in 1966), and
"Love's Made

A Fool Of You" (#26 in May '66).

For more information, please contact Bryan Thomas, DEL-FI's Director
of

Publicity & Licensing, at promo@del-fi.com or (800) 99DELFI.

A great cover version was done by The Namelosers from Sweden in 1965-66. A real scorcher with fuzz guitar and great vocals.

Whoops. I sent that first one out blank.
Anyway I live in Santa Barbara, CA and I'm looking to start a 60's influenced
garage rock band. I'm willing to drive to LA for practice, gigs, etc if
needed. I play 4 chord rhythms with a dual channeled-fuzzy and cleanish reverb
drenched tone. Also capable of a pathetic sloppy lead. Looking for bandmates
that are committed and energetic. Talent is cool too, but those two are more
important. I'm totally interested in any organ players out there, besides the
necessary bass and drums. In theory I can sing a play but I am a weak rock
singer, so if someone wants to take over, great. I'm also more interested in
playing honest, energetic garage rock, than prancing around on stage with
paisley shirts and beetle boots, if you catch my drift.
If you are interested, let me know
matt
